The year 1993 isstarting out well for ushere inIndia. First, our son, David,
came for a visit the latter part of December and remained through most of February. He has been such a help working in the academic field, esp>ecially at
mBM y
SACC. Itwas with mixed feelings that 1waved good-bye to him atthe airport as
We were joined in the work with the Swafford family Rusty, Audrey, Justin and Jordan. We all worked hard to get them settled in at the Madrapakkam bungalow. They have been able to adjust rapidly, and more will be said of this
work at a later date.
We are also still enjoying the fruits of the visit from Gene and Alice Houpt. They have meant so much to us in our life, and now that Art is gone, I depend on them a great deal. Their enthusiasm for this work is wonderful to see, and they were able to note the changes of the recentyears. Thosechanges have been in the people as weU as in the actual work. Gene noted a stronger middle class working group not possible to see when they first visited in 1973. How great it would be if Gene and Alice could also come and live here but they are so greatly needed in the work in USA.
Very soon it will be Easter. For Christians everywhere this is a special time. Likewise, for the Christians in India

This project is ideal for both individuals and classes of all ages.
Although it is September, our Christmas program is coming into focus. Tomorrow (September 2) we start to organize the village churches and begin the
countdown time until December. The villagers have become quite excited about
all this, and the beautiful dramas they see performed and the gifts so freely handed out to the children. It's a great witness to those who do not know Jesus, and a testimony to the faithful workers. I know you will join me in prayer that we will again be able to witness the truth of His Word without imdue disturbances. We are looking for Biblesin Tamil and song books for the churches. It is hard to get enough of these Bibles, but we can get portions. Musical instruments are also needed, and the preachers are praying that they may even have cycles so they can get around to the outlying villages.
Soyou see, work is never done, but it is a blessed work, and we never tire of it. My family members are in good
contact with me, and I have just enjoyed a six-month visit with David. I look for his speedy returnhopefully in time
to share the Christmas season.
In this letter I just want to thank you for your bountiful gifts and for your concern for all the workers here. It is an exciting time, and one of greatvictories. Ifyou ever come this way, be sure to ask for 11RamanathanSt., Kilpauk, Madras, and we can have a home away from home visit. May God richly bless you and shower His mercies upon you.

Adopt A Village
Progress is being made in the "Adopt A Village" project which we announced in the June issue of The India Challenger. Several groups have taken the challenge to help with our first village project: One youth group has determined to raise the funds for a church building; one Bible School Class has provided funds for one teacher; one congregation has provided $500 towards the cost of a well; and a fourth-grade week at a Christian Camp has provided funds for over
. 200 Bibles.

The first village we are attempting is Poovalai in the northern part of the state of Tamil Nadu. Poovalai is 2Vi miles from the Bay of Bengal and 40 miles from Madras City. The total population is 1443 people ~ 450 of whom are less than 18 years of age. Fifty percent of the villagers are Hindus; 40% are Moslem; and 10%
are Christian.

Having little or no education, a low paying job with no promotion possibili ties, no medical care and poor transportation, the villagers are doomed to a trapped life. Despite the marvels of technology, these villagers are living in a
nightmare of the past that they can only escape if helped by their fellow
Christians in other parts of the world.
In spite of the difficulties, the Gospel is working. As this copy was prepared, 45 had become Christians since our attention was directed to this village. These become the nucleus for the only church in this area. Their building will be a great

It will serve as the worship center, a literacy center, a base for the self-help programs and a medical care center. Truly the church will be the life of these villagers.
