Overview
Feature Introduction
Conventional signaling function only supports signaling tracing of a single NE. Call Trace System (CTS) is a cross-NE call trace system. By setting the MS numbers (MSISDN or IMSI; 100 at most) to be traced, you can uniformly send tracing instructions to the whole network system (GERAN/UTRAN/CN) through CTS to trace the whole call flow from radio network side to core network, and collect and display standard signaling and internal messages that meet trace conditions. CTS implements MS-based trace, so it can be used to analyze MS signaling data, identify and locate failures, and provide analysis report. CTS is applicable to scenarios where system failure needs to be located and user complaints needs to be addressed. This document describes implementation of CTS in GSM iBSC.

Technical Description
Technical Description of OMM
Overview of CTS
CTS is an independent functional subsystem in GSM network management system OMM. With CTS, you can uniformly send trace instructions to all GSM NEs on ZTE network to perform MS call trace, and collect and display signaling data of all GMS NEs that meets trace conditions. Figure 1 shows the position of CTS in the whole system.

Figure 1

Position of GTS in the whole system

CTS is related to OMM and NE. There is no logical relation between CTS and EMS. Table 1 lists the function overview and interface descriptions of OMM and NE:
Table 1 Function overview and interface description of OMM and NE

System OMM

Function overview OMM is a local operation and maintenance module of NE. It supports other daily maintenance functions including local signaling trace, and provides message route forwarding module. NE receives trace requests from CTS, and reports signaling messages when a trigger event occurs.

Interface description The message route forwarding module receives messages from CTS or NEs and transparently transmits them to NEs or CTS.

NE

Information such as refid and so on needs to be transferred among NEs through trace invoke. CTS performs associated presentation of the information.

3.1.2

CTS Design Principle

CTS respectively implements client and server modules. CTS adopts the routing forward module to interact with different types of NEs by taking into account the great difference in OMM signaling trace implementation. OMM only implements message routing forward instead of processing logic of signaling trace. CTS generally consists of the following three parts: Workstation Function (WSF) WSF is responsible for maintenance of NE information, creation and management of trace tasks, and trace data presentation. Trace data presentation contains the following: OSF OSF contains such modules as NE information management, trace task management and message processing modules. As a core module of OSF, the task management module processes common and system tasks. To speed up message processing, avoid blocking and message loss, the trace task management module performs buffer processing and then invokes message processing thread for message processing upon receiving the message. Call flow presentation. Summary information, detailed information and elementary stream of signaling. Query and statistical analysis of data.

Southbound adaptation moduleEMF EMF is responsible for NE access, including bidirectional adaptation/conversion of uplink and downlink messages. To avoid impacting handshake and traffic query due to reporting of a huge number of data messages, the data messages and control messages in the uplink message are processed separately. Such functions as the switching of trace conditions and identification of issued NEs must be implemented on the EMF.

3.1.3

Architecture Description

Function overview Add and delete connected NEs in CTS, and query and modify information of connected NEs (including type, name and IP address of connected NEs). Trace task WSF is a core module of signaling trace. It implements the interface and WSF flow control of three functions: Trace task setting, trace task start and trace task stop. This module monitors and receives signaling messages on OSF of CST, decodes them and sends them to message presentation module to display message information. Reported signaling message is displayed. This module decodes the reported signaling messages and obtains detailed information of them. This module stores NE information, including buffer and permanent storage.

3.2

Implementation in iBSC
iBSC implements CTS functions with procedure as followingshown in: CTS client initiates a trace request, with the trace object as the IMSI of an MS. The trace request is forwarded to iBSC through CTS server. The OMP is responsible for communication between foreground and background in iBSC. The signaling trace management process is resident on OMP and responsible for managing various signaling trace tasks and performing periodic trace task synchronization with CTS server to ensure task consistency between foreground and background. Upon receiving the CTS trace request from CTS client, iBSC broadcasts it to all related signaling processing boards.

ZGF05-25-031 Call Trace System Interface

Upon receiving the CTS trace request, the signaling trace process on each board screens every signaling generated based on trace requirements, and sends the signaling to be traced to CTS server. CTS server forwards the signaling to CTS client.
