These thoughts and perspectives during the May 4th Movement helped describe the influence of certain events prior towards the establishment of Red China.

Chiang Kai-sheks speech on communist opposition illustrated growing conflict and the rise for power during Chinas civil war and Japanese aggression. Chiangs 4 virtues present conflicting views against Maos and presents me with additional factors which led towards Maos victory as dictator.

I have quoted excerpts in the website. With an extensive interview with Deng Xiaoping, I have supported many aspects of Dengs revolution. Talks regarding communist vs. capitalist beliefs and foreign economic policies were used to support Chinas post-Mao issues of my thesis. Through this source, I was given the point of view of Chinas liberal and more prosperous leaders. The Fifth Modernization: Democracy (1978) By Wei Jingsheng. 2000. Columbia University. 15 July 2013. <http://afe.easia.columbia.edu/ps/cup/wei_jingsheng_fifth_modernization.pdf>. This source provides the text written on the poster of the activist Wei Jinsheng. With open criticism and narrow explanations for every aspect of the communist party, I made more insightful conclusions on the post-Mao era. I have used Weis key point of citizens valuable rights into my paper. By giving account of Chinas past through the voice of a citizen, I could support my thesis negative aspect of Mao Zedongs reign.

In addition to supplemental analytical questions, this source provides an excerpt from Maos speech in 1949. This speech stresses socialisms importance in communist victory and helps me to better describe Maos responsibilities as part of my thesis.

Gentzler, Mason J. Changing China: Readings in the History of China from the Opium War to the Present. New York: Praeger Publishers, 1977. This source provides excerpts from Chen Duxius passages in the popular 1916 New Youth magazine. With intellectuals views upon the cultural and social problems of China before communism, I formed a better overview of my thesis and topics influential factors. The strong feelings for revolution helped describe Chinese growing national pride during civil war.

This book provides me with a government publication that explains the rights and the views of women during the Mao revolution. Maos emphasis on the fact that broad masses of women helped to create a socialist society enabled me to present different aspects upon the social impacts of Maos dictatorship. Being a collection of passages and quotes from a variety of Chinas intellectuals, this source provides me with the opinions of during Maos Hundred Flowers Campaign. I have used insights upon the relations between the party and masses to create conclusions on Maos effects upon Chinese citizens. Mao Tse-Tung. Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung: The Red Guards Handbook. Nashville: George Peabody College for Teachers: 1967. The translated version of Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung (a.k.a. Little Red Book) provided me with Mao Zedongs ideologies and theories. I have quoted excerpts in the website. In the research paper, I quoted an excerpt regarding Maos words to encourage and invigorate China peasants to proceed in rapid industrialization. With Maos views upon women, work and communism, I have support my thesis key points of the lives and the rights of peasants.

Mao Zedong. Keynote speech. Founding the Peoples Republic and Chinese National Pride. Tiananmen Square, Beijing. 21 Sep 1949. Excerpts from Maos 1949 speech provided me with Chinas feelings prior to the establishment of the Peoples Republic. This was used to better support information regarding the individual action of my thesis. The ideas of Chinas masses were used to support the reasons behind Maos rise to power.

The Hunger Strike Declaration provided me with opinions and feelings of the protesters of Tiananmen Square. This presents me with an exclusive point of view of the discontent citizens. These opinions from the post-Mao era generated different sides to the typical ideas of reform, therefore, reducing biasness in my paper. Though no direct references were made in the research paper, the declaration of protest helped support the point on Chinas weak foundation in my thesis. Using this sources excerpts from Chairman Maos speech provides me with a broad perspective of rural China and steps towards agricultural socialism. I have referenced Chinas overbearing population, backwards farming and its contributions to socialism. These points were influential factors in supporting my thesis. This source presents excerpts from Mao Zedongs book entitled On Guerilla Warfare. Maos book provides justification on guerilla tactics and emphasizes its role for an undeveloped nation like China. These aspects of Maos brutal leadership helped me to support the popularity of Maos ideologies during civil war. Supporting the point on influential factors, it also helps support my thesis aspect of Chinas corrupt politics.

Snow, Edgar. Red China Today. New York: Random House, 1961. In his book, Red China Today, American Journalist, Edgar Snow records many of his valuable accounts and experiences in Maos communist China. Snow provides statistical records of economic prospects of the Great Leap Forward while also analyzing the political systems controlled by Mao. I have quoted excerpts from this book in my paper. With exclusive interviews with Mao himself and the Chinese citizens, Snows accounts provide me with valuable information to form accurate interpretations and analyses on citizens rights.

Spring Silkworms By Mao Dun. Columbia University. 1981. 15 July 2013. <http://afe.easia.columbia.edu/ps/china/mao_dun_silkworms.pdf>. With excerpts from a book written by Mao Dun, I was provided information concerning the difficulties of peasants during the Chinas Great Leap Forward. I have not directly referenced these excerpts, however, I used the peasant-based accounts to support the aspects of production leaps in my thesis. The point of view of the Chinese peasant provides more of an attacking, critical stance against Maos legacy. Women of New China. 20 July 1949. Print Quote used from this magazine Unite and take part in production and political activity to improve the economic and political status of women. A translated version of the magazine from 1949. Secondary Sources Baum, Richard. Bennet, Louise B. China in Ferment. Englewood Cliffs: Prentice-Hall Inc., 1997. This book provides an in-depth perspective of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution through the written works of others. Multiple viewpoints enabled me to form personal opinions for arguments on political corruption. I have quoted an excerpt from a work by Philip Bridgham. Chairman Maos struggle for power and the roles of the Red Guards helped emphasize Chinas disruption as conveyed in my thesis.

Bentley, Jerry H. Ziegler, Herbert F. Chinas Search for Order. Traditions and Encounters; A Global Perspective of the Past. New York: McGraw Hill, 2011. This course textbook for World History provides a brief overview on the key events throughout Chinas revolutionary period. Information regarding Sun Yat-sen, the 1911 revolution and the era of imperialism presented influential factors to support my main argument. I also used articles on Deng Xiaopings revolution to generate opinions on the state of present-day China. These opinions eventually helped form my stand in my thesis. The Boxer Rebellion. This website provides an in-depth article of the era of foreign imperialism and the boxer rebellion. Spheres of influence and the stir of national pride posed as significant and influential factors in Chinas transformation from nationalist to communist rule. A historians point of view spreads more light on the issues to come. Bo, Zhiyue. Wang, Jianwei. "Chapter 8: The Cultural Revolution." History of Modern China. US: Mason Crest Publishers, 2006. Associate professor Bo, Zhiyue and Jianwei, Wang, Master of international politics provides an extensive overview of Maos Cultural Revolution. Through the point of view of native Chinese, I am provided with an objective and neutral account of the event as it is careful to consider all perspectives. Information was used for a better understanding of change over time and impact.

Chang, Jung. Halliday, Jon. Mao, The Unknown Story. New York: Random House, 2005. This biographical book of the life of Chairman Mao reveals the horrors of every significant program, campaign and revolt occurring during his reign. As a biased source, this source helps to provide valuable information regarding the negative aspect of Mao in my thesis. I have quoted excerpts from this book in my paper. Social problems and citizens rights are greatly illustrated through chapters regarding the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the Great Purge. I have used images from this source.

China; A Century of Revolution. DVD. Williams, Sue. Zeitgeist Video. 1989-1997. 360 min. This documentary features Chinas revolution throughout the 20th Century and to the present. Through interviews, I developed objective analyses to support points during the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward. This source also provided me with outline as it provided me with brief overviews of key events throughout Chinas history. Deng Xiaoping and the rigor of modern Chinas economy were also used to support my thesis. I have used media files from this source. Chinese Cultural Studies. Aug 1995. This website provides brief descriptions of Chinas key dynasty periods and events throughout the 20th century. With descriptions such as of the May 4th movement, this source helped me to generate a broader overview of Chinas history. Historical context and Chinas major events helped me to form my thesis and my outline.

Gay, Kathlyn. Mao Zedongs China. Minneapolis: Twenty-First Century Books, 2008. This biographical book on Mao Zedong provided key events throughout Maos lifespan. Short descriptions made it easy to interpret Chinas history through a broad perspective, enabling me to develop points for my outline and thesis. I have quoted excerpts from this book in my paper. This source was not significant for more in-depth descriptions on social issues and political disruption. I have used images from this source. Gurley, John G. Chinas Economy and the Maoist Strategy. New York: Monthly Review Press, 1976. Gurleys book presents analyses on the economic aspect of China and key aspects to Maos ruling strategies. Economic situations and land reform were mainly used to understand the Chinas state prior to communism; Economic analyses were not used to establish significant points in my paragraph regarding Chinas economy. Characteristics of Mao were used to develop an overall understanding of my thesis point on corrupt politics.

Hutchings, Graham. Modern China; A Guide to a Century of Change. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2001. This book provides detailed descriptions of Chinas major events from the Qing Dynasty to present-day China. I have quoted excerpts from this book in my paper and website. I have also used this book for its in-depth analyses on present day Chinas politics and economic standing and its critical viewpoint of Chinas unstable characteristics. I used photographs. These were used to achieve my thesis in which Mao Zedong tremendously impacts the basis of todays economic superpower. Schwartz, Benjamin L. Chinese Communism and the Rise of Mao. Massachusetts: Harvard University Press: 1951. This book provides an in-depth analysis of Chinese communism and the political aspect of China. In addition to Schwartz interpretation on Maos struggle for power, I have also used information concerning the revolutionary May 4th Movement to support points on influential factors. I have quoted excerpts from this book in my paper. The political aspect of China presented in the book supported Maos negative influence on modern-day China, as mentioned in my thesis.

Terrill, Ross. China in Our Time. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1992. This book describes multiple social issues in Chinas history from 1949 to the present. As it contains much of the authors thoughts and opinions, this remains an objective source. I have used images from this book. The American scholar presents an American, open-eyed and a more liberal point of view. Social topics such as of religion, ideologies, revolution and modernization were all analyzed in great detail. Interrelationships between past events and situations in China today were provided through this source, helping to support my thesis.

World Books Documenting History; The Chinese Revolution. Chicago: World Book; Inc, 2011.

This book has provided me with numerous primary source accounts and brief secondary source descriptions. Land reform, the 1949 declaration as well as articles from women, all helped support multiple aspects regarding citizens rights of my thesis.
