The Spirit of Spirit Week

By Ian Williams 14, Design Editor

Spirit week comes but once a year at Whitfield. The five day long celebration of Warrior Spirit is one of the strongest and oldest traditions Whitfield possesses. The week starts off with Class Choice day, which really distinguishes the classes and begins to determine who is the most creative and most spirited this year. From Twin Day to Senior Citizen Day, weve seen it all. Tuesday kicks off the first all-school themed day which is one of the oldest and favorite: Character Day. It wont be hard to see Tiger Woods in the hall or even Superman, a cowboy, or even Mrs. Greathouse. Character Day usually has the most varied and creative outfits of the week. Halfway through the week is Decade Day. This really takes you on a walk down memory lane as you stroll down from the front hallway to Woods Hall. I think we can all expect to see some groovy 70s dancers with Afros and quite the array of 80s leg warmers and hair scrunchies. Thursday is Holiday Day. A former class choice pick, this day brings in quite the assortments of costumes ranging from the Easter bunny to Brits on their holiday. Spirit week saves the best and most spirited for last: the famous Green and White day. Students with their full bodies painted flood Woods Hall. This is the most anticipated day of the week and also the loudest. Its not uncommon for the noise level in the auditorium to reach borderline, ear-damaging levels. With almost 400 people chanting things such as We love Whitfield it

Wacky Tacky Day is noticeably missing from this years costume-themed days, but the photo above reminds us what a colorful day this one can be (from 2012 Spirit Week). Photo by Elie Regev

really shows how spirited and special this place really is. Over 400 students and their parents join each other on the field hockey hill to enjoy the annual lip sync and bonfire that concludes the week. By this time of the week all of the Whitfield Warriors are as spirited as they can be. Students of all ages participate in their own grades creative, well-rehearsed lip sync. Throughout the Warrior festival, all of the fall

varsity sport teams and players are announced to get the crowd spirited for the homecoming games played the following day. By the end of the staged event on the field hockey field, the lip sync judges announce the first, second, and third place performances, awarding spirit points by ranking. After the performance and awards are finished everyone follows the torch bearers to the bonfire grounds where the castle is burned. Who will be the winner this year?

For some, its a whole new school. For others, its the small face-lifts and large changes that make this year different from others.

new features

By Noah Mondschein 14, Editor-in-Chief and Isabella Gross 14, Assistant Editor

As always, one of the best parts of starting off the school year is meeting everyone that will be joining your class. This year, Whitfield welcomed 86 new students with the seventh graders leading at 25 new students, setting a new record for the Whitfield community. We now have a grand total of almost four hundred students! And the best thing about new Whitfield Warriors? How they get involved right away and dont wait until they are told to do so. Even before school began, many new students showed up to the publications workshop to get a feel for what it would be like to be on the newspaper and yearbook staff. Then when orientation rolled around, new students were going around to all the booths to find out all that Whitfield had to offer. Many signed up for multiple clubs and were eager to get started right away. I thought that being a new student would be hard, especially for my senior year. But the Whitfield community has been so welcoming and inviting to me, they made the transition very smooth and enjoyable! said Anna Morgan 14. Many new students have joined sports and clubs and are making great contributions to our community. Its hard to tell whos new and whos not anymore. Whitfield is really fun because after going to the same school for six years I am now able to make new friends and have different experiences, said Kaelyn Beeman 20. Way to go Whitfield, and welcome, new Warriors!

Recently, I sat down with Mr. John Delautre to talk about finishing up his first year at Whitfield, new security measures, fashion and other issues. The most important part about Mr. Delautres first year, was building relationships, he said. Mrs. Greathouse is extremely gifted and I credit her for helping me make this transition. She was his main ally and key to his success. The part of his job that nobody knows about is that he has an important level of accountability with the trustees who are his boss. They are the vision keepers of the school. Whitfield is an amazing place, and even though Ive been in this business thirty plus years, I still wanted to do well by this school. Whitfields mission is very close to my heart, he said. He wants to keep the classroom environment interesting instead of having a boring heres what you need to know environment. He really wanted this job and once he got it, he wanted to do it right. He took his time and listened to advice from Mrs. Greathouse, trustees and parents. We also talked to him about fashion trends among the young men at the school. Mr. Delautre says that he has seen many fashions come and go and it used to be that when you reached age twelve, you would start dressing like your parents. He thinks tank tops on guys are just a bad look even if you have a super bod. When asked about the Intersession we will be having in March, he said, It will give students and teachers an opportunity to pursue topics in depth. Hes hoping its going to open up our thinking, and hes anticipating in the second year of it, we could do an expanded version. Lastly, we talked briefly about the security changes and Mr. Delautre explained that this was something that had been in the works for a while because we are a school that used to be easily accessible and we needed to change that. We now have cameras that will hopefully keep potential threats away. Another aspect of the new security is that the front doors are open only at lunch. It may not make sense to open the doors at lunch, but the security presence is still right there and they are all trained police men. Sometimes you have to give up a little to sleep a more soundly. Overall, he thinks we are going to have a really great year especially with the new growth and enrollment. Theres nobody in this town that does what we do and we need to do a better job of letting people know that.

SPORTS

The Warriors have their armor on and are poised for great success this fall season. With all five fall sports programs having trained hard for the challenges ahead, there are sure to be many spectacular moments. These moments can only be made more spectacular with a strong fan base to cheer on the players. We strongly encourage you to support these teams whether on the court or the field. The tennis team is led by Coach Jill Starr. With experienced seniors setting a good example, the hardworking newcomers are sure to have a good year. With a motivated group, Coach Starr feels very optimistic about the upcoming season. She recognizes that there will definitely be challenges this year and believes that the hardest one will be coming against district rival Principia. So far the team has had a good start. On the volleyball court, Coach Cipriano Casado believes that the team is ready to have another great season. The team is looking good, especially on defense, he says, and he calls the squad a young team, but with solid volleyball skills. He predicts his girls will improve over the progression of the season as they figure out how to replace last years seniors who comprised the core of the team. Coach considers their toughest matchups to be against St. Pius X and Westminster, both former state champions. The boys soccer program is confident that they will bounce back after a disappointing season last year. With a large group of talented seniors, juniors, and some underclassmen, all led by Coaches Bill Daues and Mike Quante, they have the drive to go the distance. The beginning of the season has met the team with great success. Out on the schools backyard, the field hockey team has been fighting tooth and nail. The team is led by Coach Maggie Young. If you blinked your eyes you probably missed them, but the cross country team has been zooming around the course. Under Coach Matt Polittes guidance, the team is in tip-top shape to pass any other schools they will race.

On the baseball side of Saint Louis, the Cardinals are in first place, being two games over the Pirates. This year the cards started out well, but later lost seven games in a row. On the 17th, they beat Denver. Matt Holiday went 4-4 and Descalso hit a triple, putting the cards in the lead 6-0. The final score of the game was 11-4. The Cardinals players have suffered a lot of injuries, including Allen Craig, Matt Holliday, Chris Carpenter, and David Freese. Several players continue to play even with their injuries. Then on the 18th, the Cards went against Denver again. It was a moment made for baseball, said one Cardinal fan. Colorado loaded the bases, and Todd Henton, who had recently amassed over 2500 hits, was up to bat. Mujica, the ending pitcher, struck him out allowing the Cardinals to win 4-3. For the first time ever, the Cards have 26 wins over 500. The 19th was one of the longest games in a while, lasting for 15 endings. The Cards finally scored in the fourth inning. Molina made a sacrifice hit and Dickerson and Holliday scored. Freese scored later in that inning, and then in the next ending Jay scored. It was the top of the eighth inning when Holliday scored, and then in the ninth inning Wong scored. The Rookies scored in the second, third, eighth, ninth, and the fifteenth innings, winning 7-6. They Edward Snowden and Bradley Google images caused The Cards to have only one game Manning over thefrom Pirates. Overall, the Cardinals have 5 wins and 6 losses in extra innings.

Map of Syria, and photo from Syria chemical clean up from Google images

The word violence is starting to become synonymous in the media with Syria, as the clash between President Bashar Assads regime and Syrian citizens continues. The United Nations estimates that there are more than 100,000 casualties and millions displaced. But its the method of the violence, not just the amount of it, that has garnered appearance in the spotlight most recently. With possible evidence of chemical weapons coming to light, the US and the world questions whether the Assad Regimes attempts at keeping the opposition in check has gone far enough to provoke world-wide intervention. Syria has reportedly been researching and producing weapons of mass destruction since the 80s. Its believed they smuggled the materials for making these weapons in by using different companies as fronts. This suspicion was confirmed on July 23, 2012, when Syria actually confirmed that they possessed a stockpile of chemical weapons. However, Syria says the weapons are reserved for national defense against foreign countries. Many world powers question Syrias intentions despite what they said, and these suspicions gained further support when unconfirmed reports by Al Jazeera released stated a gas attack killed seven civilians in the rebel-held al-Bayyada neighborhood of Homs on the December 23, 2012. Many U.S. officials put merit into these reports, but, officially, the White House was skeptical. Later, on March 19, 2013, similar reports appeared saying that chemical weapons may have been fired into the Khan al-Assal district in Aleppo and the Al Atebeh suburbs of Damascus. After this the UN decided to investigate, but they encountered much resistance from the Syrian government.

Then, on April 13, 2013, British military scientists found evidence of chemical weapon use in the Syrian conflict. This discovery led to Britain and France sending a letter to the UN on April 18. The letter claimed that there was evidence suggesting that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons on more than one occasion since December 2012. Similarly, U.S intelligence assessed that the Assad regime had been using chemical weapons, specifically sarin gas. Another attack occurred on April 29 in Saraqib, during which two people died and 13 more were injured. Things continued to progress in this manner until eventually, on June 13, the United States confirmed that there is definitive proof that the Assad regime had repeatedly used chemical weapons on rebel forces. Recently, on August 21, Ghouta was the scene of yet another alleged Assad regime chemical weapons attack. This attack is believed to have caused the deaths of 1,300 people, perhaps more. The day before this attack, President Barack Obama stated, We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation. After the attack, on August 31, President Obama asked Congress to authorize direct American military intervention in the Syrian civil war. The Authorization for the Use of Military Force Against the Government of Syria to Respond to Use of Chemical Weapons was approved on September 4, 2013. United States intervention now seems inevitable.

Though small, the Diversity Awareness club sure is mighty. Their newest project is making Whitfield a No Place for Hate. A No Place for Hate community is a safe environment where bullying, offensive jokes, namecalling or biased remarks are not tolerated. The process is fairly simple and is in effect. Diversity Awareness has set up speakers to talk about various issues and will be making announcements informing the school on the process. This is something that the club has wanted to do for a while now and has finally decided to get started. Though Whitfield is a fairly accepting place, there have been incidents of bullying. Normally when you think of bullying, you think of fist fights in the hall. Well luckily, we dont have that problem. But bullying is much more than physical fighting. It can also be verbal which makes it easy for cyber bullying because you arent face-to-face with the person you are attacking. There have been incidents of cyber bullying within the Whitfield community as well as offensive jokes and biased remarks. The goal of making Whitfield a No Place for Hate community is that everyone will feel safe going to school and hopefully when the process is through, we will be able to call ourselves a No Place for Hate school.

Dangers of Texting While Driving

Dont let this become you.
By Kaeyln Beeman 20, Staff Writer

OP / EDS

Above photos from Google images

Have you ever been in a car when you or your parents were texting or talking on the phone while driving? You may think Its ok, Im fine, I can text and drive cause Im good at it. In 2011, 23% of auto collisions involved cell phones (thats 1.3 million crashes!). 5 seconds of your attention is taken away from the road when you text and drive, and though it may not seem like much, when you are on a highway full of cars, it is. If you are driving 55mph, youll travel the length of a football field in 5 seconds - thats a long time to drive without looking at the road. Texting while driving makes a crash 23 times more likely, dialing is a 2.8 times more risk, talking or listening is a 1.3 more risk, and reaching for your device is a 1.4 more risk. 13% of drivers age 18-20 involved in car wrecks admitted to texting or talking on their mobile devices at the time of the crash. 34% said they have texted while driving, 82% of Americans

age 16-17 own cell phones, and 52% said they have talked on their phone while driving. Some people dont think its a problem. 77% of young adults are somewhat confident that they can safely text while driving, and 55% of young adult drivers say its easy to text and drive, but it is a problem. Teens that text while driving spend about 10% of their driving time outside of their lane! Adults text and drive too. 48% of kids age 12-17 have been in a car where the driver was texting, 48% of young drivers have seen their parents talk and drive, 15% of young drivers have seen their parents text and drive, 27% of adults have sent or received text messages while driving. If you see your parents or your friend using their phone while driving tell them to stop for their own safety. Just because others do, dont text or call when driving. You can end up seriously hurt. Never text and drive.

Edward Snowden: The Patriot

By Ian Laffey 18, Guest Writer

In the news: Earlier this year, in a controversial move, Edward Snowden, a former CIA and NSA employee, intentionally leaked classified details about US surveillance to the media. The actions of the NSA violated the Fourth Amendment. The Fourth Amendment states that the government requires a warrant, and getting warrants in secret courts is certainly not what they meant. The government is collecting information about everyone, and not just US citizens. In fact, the US is giving away information on its citizens to other countries. What the NSA is doing is unconstitutional and morally wrong. Although his actions could be considered treason, Edward Snowden is just trying to shine a light on what the NSA has been doing in their secret FISA courts. The argument that Snowden is endangering the US by leaking these documents is rubbish. If Snowden wanted to endanger America, he would have sold information to our enemies. Snowden is a patriot. He is trying to bring attention to the fact that our rights are being trampled upon, and how privacy is merely a ruse.

Edward Snowden - patriot or enemy of the state? Photo from Google images

People post tons of personal information on the internet; in fact, the 21st century should be called the Information Age, as we blindly share everything. People feel like their information is safe, but it isnt. The argument that reporter Glenn Greenwald could be doing anything illegal is lunacy; the First Amendment protects freedom of the press. If someone wants to write a story and put it in a newspaper, they can. Many people argue that

security is necessary, but I believe that privacy is more important. The government has no business viewing what you are doing unless they have a warrant strictly for you or probable cause. If the citizens of the US dont speak up, the government will continue to infringe on rights. I think people around the world need to stand up against spying. Its time to draw the line between security and privacy.

Connors Creatures
Animal lover Connor Dakich gives his take on this majestic creature of the sea...
By Connor Dakich 14, Staff Writer

The Walrus Edition

This marvelous hunk of mustached beauty is the walrus. Walruses are beautiful in their own special way, and are also some of the most iconic, yet misunderstood, mammals that we know today. These beautiful blobs of skin and fat have some of the most social habits in all of the animal kingdom. They are constantly living in a pack, communicating with loud bellows and snorts, but they also have a very dark side around mating season. Walrus have been known to grow up to 12 feet long and live for up to 40 years! These huge animals weigh about 1.5 tons on average, and large males will send every single pound of his body towards any other male who poses as a threat to his chances at mating. In many cases, walrus were found to defend their entire herd from threats like outsider males and polar bears. Their Latin name, Odobenus rosmarus, literally means tooth-walking sea-horse. Walruses are naturally equipped with two huge canine teeth called tusks which are not only used for fending off potential attackers, but also for breaking breathing holes in ice, and for pulling themselves out of the icy water and on to land. This is why both male and female walruses grow tusks. These tusks can grow to be 3 feet long and were so sought after in the 18th and 19th centuries that walruses were hunted to extinction in Nova Scotia. But the tusks were not the only desired resource from these animals; they were also hunted for their oil, which is kept in their huge fat reserves, their skin, and even their meat. Currently, only Native Americans are legally permitted to hunt these majestic creatures because they need them to survive. The Northern Native Americans are very similar to the Native Americans we know from the Mid-West

Walrus photos from Google images. Photo of Connor above by Amoree Hodges.

because they used every single part of the animal. In some ways the walrus was their buffalo food source. The walrus is a curious specimen because of its incredible girth, yet it has spectacular mobility when in the water. Their whiskers are not only for looks, but they are actually supersensitive hairs called mustcial vibrissae which are used for detecting shellfish, their favorite food, on the dark ocean bottom. Walruses even have the strange ability to slow their heartbeats when diving for food; this allows them to hold their breath for up to 30 minutes and, of course, to survive in the icy arctic water. These beautiful wonders of nature are also very intelligent and are trained just like sea lions and seals at some aquariums. Although they lack

the motor skills of a seal on land, they do possess the capability to learn many varieties of tricks, from doing sit-ups and push-ups, to pretending to tango or play a saxophone. However, walruses are no laughing matter. During the mating season, bull males are almost in a blind rage towards anything that gets too close to comfort. Although they look essentially immobile, do not underestimate them. Walruses, unlike seals, are able to run on all fours and can reach the speed of a running human in short bursts. These animals can weigh as much as a midsized car and are capable of doing an enormous amount of damage to a human. Luckily they are not naturally hostile and captive walruses often create great bonds with their trainers.
