October Outlook
With last weeks rains there is no question that fall is finally upon us. This is great for anglers as the cooler temperatures will get fish more active and the rain will bring more anadrimous fish into our river systems. October is hands down our favorite time of year to fish here at Orvis Bellevue. Trout-The Yakima will be fishing extraordinarily well this month. Check out our Yakima River Forecast for more info on this fishery. The Forks of the Snoqualamie, Forks of the Skykomish, and Skykomish tributaries will all fish very well this month. A standard dry/dropper setup is all you need for all day success on these streams. Searun cutthroat fishing in the rivers will also be very good this month especially in the North Sound Rivers. The Skykomish, Snoqualamie, Skagit, Stilly, and Cowlitz are all great places to target these fish. Try throwing traditional reverse spiders, small streamer patterns, and even dry flies to catch these ferocious fish. The states stillwater fishing will really pick up this month as the water temperatures cool and bring fish shallow. Expect to see hatches of midges and callibaetis at many of your favorite lakes. Anglers fishing lakes that have brown trout will find these fish in pre-spawn mode and very aggressive, try pulling big streamers near spawning staging areas. However, never target fish on Redds and let them go about their business making sweet fishy love. Steelhead-Fall is definitely the best time of year to catch steelhead here in the Pacific Northwest. Anglers will see a great mix of summer and even early winter fish entering the river systems. Saltwater-Saltwater fishing will remain great for searun cutthroat in the South Sound and begin to taper off for Coho as the rains push these fish up into the rivers. When targeting searun cutties, throw small baitfish imitations on an intermediate line. Come in the shop and check out our great selection of Puget Sound flies. Toward the end of the month we will see a few chum moving into the river estuaries but fishing for chum wont start being really productive until mid November.

Emerging Rivers Yakima River Forecast

"October is a great month on the Yakima, if the weather holds and you still have time to fish it - the best hatches of the year still include big bugs (October Caddis, Shortwing Stones) as well as mayflies that will test your bug ID skills - was that an olive or mahogany? Look closely, and match each with size, the most obvious difference in the two. The BWO's are smaller in size and emergers on the swing or under a YakCaddis or stonefly dry are a great way to fish the smaller hatch. Midges are also in play, so consider stocking up your Zebra or Disco midges in black and green. Smaller caddis are still available as an afternoon treat after the late morning olive and mahogany hatches- but if the big orange bugs are out, twitch a YakCaddis on the surface and be patient. Expect a good swatting to drown the bug and an instant return to the fly - wait until you see the fish's mouth close before setting the hook!" -Derek Young

The Secret Sauce Advanced Indicator Rig For Steelhead

While indicator fishing for steelhead is not the traditional way of doing things, and will often by scoffed at by the purists, it can be flat out effective. There are many rivers in our state that are very conducive to the Indi-Rig such as the Klickitat, Methow, and smaller coastal streams on the OP. In these rivers, the bobber will generally out fish a swung fly. Knowing how to set up an indicator rig for steelhead will ultimately determine how successful you will be during your day of fishing. The advanced rig shown in the video below may take more time to set up than a traditional nymph rig, but it will help you be far more effective when fishing. California Steel on the Indi-Rig

Years in the salt chasing baitfish that are very flashy have predisposed Coho Salmon to try and eat anything that has a lot of shine. This is why conventional anglers do so well fishing spoons and inline spinners. Fly anglers can trigger the Cohos natural instinct to eat with the Flash Fly. This is a very simple pattern to tie and can be used to catch fish in the salt and in the rivers. Try tying a few of these up in a variety of colors and try them on your next outing, were sure you will like the results.
