CHEMISTRY 109A Fall 2013 Instructor: Text: Gauchospace Homework: Paula Yurkanis Bruice "Organic Chemistry", 7th edition

by P. Y. Bruice "Solutions Manual and Study Guide", 7th edition by P. Y. Bruice Here you will find the syllabus and handouts for the PowerPoint lectures. The answers to the midterms will be posted here. The on-line homework assignments are posted on MasteringChemistry. Additional homework assignments are listed in the syllabus. They are not to be turned in; the answers are in the Solutions Manual. There is a practice test at the end of each chapter in the Solutions Manual that might be helpful. The answers are in the back of the Solutions Manual. Check out the Study Area of MasteringChemistry. It contains: Four practice tests for each chapter. (These are graded for you then tell you what sections you need to back and study.) 3-D models of all the molecules in the chapter (so you do not need to buy a model kit). Biographical sketches of all the scientists mentioned in the chapter. Definitions for all the key terms. Short answers to the in-chapter problems marked with diamond. BRING A PICTURE ID TO ALL MIDTERMS AND EXAMS Mid-terms: Friday, October 18 Friday, November 8 Monday, November 25 Final Exam: Wednesday, December 11 7:30-10:30 PM

Study Area:

You are required to take only two of the three midterms. If you take all three, your lowest grade will be dropped. If there is any reason that you are unable to take a midterm, that one will be your "drop." In cases where your attendance is required at a University-sponsored event (e.g., field trips, intercollegiate athletic events, etc.), the midterm may be taken BEFORE the scheduled time. Prior arrangements must be made and your required absence on the day of the scheduled midterm must be verified by a letter from your professor or coach. THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP MIDTERMS OR FINALS Grading: The on-line homework will count 10% of your final grade. The final exam has the same number of points as two midterms. If the sum of the two midterms is higher than the final, the midterms will count 50% and the final 40% toward the final course grade. If the final is higher than the midterms, the midterms will count 15% and the final will count 75% toward the final course grade. As = 88 100% Cs = 63 75.9% Fs = < 50% Bs = 76 87.9% Ds = 50 62.9%

Instances of academic dishonesty (looking at another students test, altering a graded test, etc.) will be reported to the Student-Faculty Committee on Student Conduct. Compete answers to all the questions in the test are in the Solutions Manual. Each chapter contains at least one box labeled Problem-Solving Strategy. Pay close attention to these. Notice that each Problem-Solving Strategy box is followed by a question designed to give you practice solving the kind of problem just discussed in the Strategy. Read To the Student on the inside of the front cover; then look at what is on the inside of the back cover; check out the Glossary on page G-1 and the appendices starting on page A1; the Key Terms for each chapter are defined at the beginning of each chapter in the Study Guide/Solutions Manual.
