GENERAL INFORMATION Name: Caitlyn McLaughlin Lesson Title: Color wheel Grade level(s)/Course: 1st grade Dates taught:

INFORMATION ABOUT THE LESSON Content Standards: NAEA Standards: 1.C 1.E 5.A 5.B 6.A 6.B Enduring Understanding and/or Essential Question: How can I mix colors effectively? Instructional Objectives: Students will understand differences between primary and secondary colors. Students will problem solve to create new colors. Students will create a composition using color mixing. Prior Learning/Prior Thinking: Students will be given a verbal formative assessment asking them about colors.( Attached)

LESSON IMPLEMENTATION Focus/Purpose Statement Students will learn how colors interact with each other to make different colors. Procedure Day 1 : Formative Assessment I will quiz the class about colors starting out with easy questions that get harder. I will record the information and adjust my lesson plan accordingly. Day 2: Intro Activity I will introduce an activity using transparencies and have the student get into assigned groups to work together to create new colors (I will separate into groups using proficient and developing studying in the same group). Students will assemble into groups. Each group will be given three colored transparencies (or mylar) in blue, yellow, and red. Students will be asked to come up with the colors green, orange, and purple. Students will share their successes with struggling students. When finding each color there will be a new group leader (the student who handles the transparencies), while their group members share their thoughts with each other. The students will be given new transparencies: Orange, purple, and green. They will be asked if they can come up with colors like red, yellow, and blue. Let students know the difference between secondary colors and primary colors. Day 3: Paint mixing intro I will review with students mixing colors and primary and secondary colors. Review basics of watercolors and review watercolor technique. Students work individually to mix colors. I will circulate the room to assist students.

Student will draw three intersecting circles on their paper using black crayon Students will start by painting red at the top, yellow to the right and blue to the left. Intersecting sections will create secondary colors Students will label colors

Day 4-5: Create an Abstract Composition Students will trace objects (masking tape, triangle, compass, flower, leaf, lid, box, etc.) and have them intersect (go over intersection). Demonstrate the process. Each table will have objects to trace. Students will fill their paper composition using traceable objects. Students will paint using no two primaries next to each other. Where the objects intersect the colors will mix. Summative assessment. How is this lesson plan appropriate for the age group: This lesson plan was developed to be building from the ground up, little prior experience is needed and 1st graders are more developmentally ready for using materials they have previously used in kindergarten as well as being familiar with some colors and some students may even know how they interact with each other. The students that already know a little bit about colors can interact and help their peers understand how colors interact with each other during the Intro activity. Since proficient students still need to create using their knowledge of the color wheel they will likely be engaged with the projects that go along with their knowledge. For students who are still developing their understanding of how colors interact with each other I will start with concrete evidence using a fun activity that will likely be less frustrating when paired with a more knowledgeable student. Using a formative assessment at the beginning will allow me to break up students into successful groups. The information will gradually get more abstract as the students build their schema. Coming back to terms such as primary colors and secondary colors over and over in the unit will help students create a strong foundation for their schemas for later work in mixing colors and color wheel activities. Using the summative assessment I can show students and parents their improvement on color interactions. Materials and Resources Assessment Transparencies or mylar
