Hard work pays off


Bronze medal win rewards alpine skier

In his gold and blue Highlanders outfit, you can often spot Hugh Brown at the teams games. But Brown isnt your regular die-hard rugby fan, nor is he comfortable sitting on the sidelines. Brown is a bona fide athlete, and a good one at that. Ask him what he does best and hell tell you: I work hard. Browns hard work has paid off. He won a skiing bronze medal at the 2013 Winter Special Olympics, held in South Korea. After competing at the National Games in Cardrona last August, he was one of eight alpine skiers who qualified for the Olympics. Brown, who has Down Syndrome, said he felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness when he found out he would be competing, but mostly excitement. At the games, Brown first had to advance through an initial divisioning process before embarking on the quest for a medal. The advanced course was very steep, Browns mother, Clare, said, holding her hand at analmost 90-degree angle to demonstrate. Asked if he ever got scared Brown just shrugged. No, not really. Brown, 26, has skied since he was 8. Learning with friends as part of a school programme, he is now skilled enough to beat his father down the mountain. He doesnt mind, Brown said. Off-season Hugh plays basketball and swims with his Otago Club. At the end of November he will compete in his third national summer games, his first time as a swimming competitor. After a calamitous start in this years Super 15, the Highlanders have another chance for redemption this Saturday. Theyve had a bye week to contemplate their eight losses in a row in 2013, so they should be hungry against the mid-table Sharks. Where: Forsyth Barr Stadium
