Consecration of the World, our Diocese, and Our Parish to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Today (Sunday), marks the 96th Anniversary of the third apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three Portuguese children near Fatima. On this anniversary, Pope Francis is consecrating the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Also, Bishop Conlon will consecrate the entire Diocese of Joliet to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Bishop Conlon and Fr. Peter invites all the people of our parish to prayerfully consecrate themselves, individually, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and to pray that they and the entire diocese might rely upon the inspiration and strength of our Blessed Mother to witness to Christ in our increasingly secular society. The 10:00am Mass this weekend is a special mass in honor the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Readings from the feast day will be proclaimed rather than the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Rite of Christian for Adults, RCIA

RCIA is not a program but a process of gradual conversion. The RCIA, as a rite, marks stages along the path to full commitment in the Roman Catholic Church. The RCIA, as formation, gradually looks to the inner transformation of the individual to God's call as given week by week in the lectionary of Scripture readings. It also looks to Sunday Eucharist and to the gradual transformation of the person to become an active member of the local church wherever he or she lives. Do you know someone that would like to join the Catholic Church? Someone who is not baptized, someone baptized in another faith or someone that has not completed all of their Sacraments of Initiation. We are accepting interviews for committing to the process of conversion into full communion with the Catholic Church. Do you know of someone or would like to join the RCIA team. Life is a Gift from God

The Gospel of Life is both a great gift of God and an exacting task for humanity....In giving life to man, God demands that he love, respect and promote life. ~~Blessed John Paul II October is respect life month in the Catholic Church. Life has become an issue that is unnecessarily fraught with controversy and contention, but few disagree that it is the most precious gift from God. For without life and then faith through our Baptism, we would not know God, His Son or the Holy Spirit. The Church teaches us to respect life from conception to natural death, as we read in Scripture. Mary Visits Elizabeth: During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Marys greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled. Luke 1:39-45 Elizabeth greeted Mary with the knowledge that she is the tabernacle of the son of God. John, at six months in the womb, greets Jesus Christ our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit just days prior. Abortion is a difficult issue to discuss, but have you ever noticed that an unwanted child in the womb is identified as a fetus, and a wanted child is a baby? It must give us pause that the miracle of life does not begin when our feet touch the birthing table. May we all pray to strengthen families to overcome the widespread use of contraception especially in the form of abortion.

Living Rosary
October is the Month of the Holy Rosary to honor the Blessed Virgin. Please join the Council of Catholic Women on Monday, October 21, at 7pm in a Living Rosary. We will begin in the PLC with refreshments and a short meeting. We will conclude in the Church with the Living Rosary. All are welcome to attend! Please think about becoming active in CCW. We would love to have you join us! DEFEND MARRIAGE LOBBY DAY
On Wednesday, October 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., you are invited to join with the Catholic Conference of Illinois and the Illinois Family Institute for a Defend Marriage Lobby Day in Springfield. Join Illinois families from around the state to take a stand to protect marriage, religious freedom, parental rights, and the innocence of our children. 33 Days to Morning Glory

We will begin a second 33 Day Morning Glory retreat on Thursday, Oct. 17 after the 8:30 am Mass. Consecration will be on Thursday, November 21 at the 8:30 am Mass. We will meet every Thursday in the PLC for one hour to go over reflections and DVD. The cost is $30 for the book and retreat manual. If you already made your consecration and would like to come to the Thursday morning gatherings to participate with the manual the cost will $15. Updated Standards
Dear Parish Volunteer, As of February 2013 the Diocesan Policy, Standards and Behaviors of Working with Minors has been updated. We must have every volunteer read and sign the Acknowledgement form that they received a copy of the policy. The Policy is lengthy and will consume a lot of paper and not to mention the cost to reprint the entire package for almost 400 volunteers. I ask that if you have access to the internet to please log on to our website, www.ctklombard.org/safeenvironment. On the right hand side under forms, you will find the updated policy. Underneath that is the Acknowledgement form. Print and sign the Acknowledgement form then return it to a staff member or directly to Eileen Maggiore. United with Christ by Baptism, believers already truly participate in the heavenly life of the risen Christ, but this life remains hidden with Christ in God. The Father has already raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Nourished with his body in the Eucharist, we already belong to the Body of Christ. When we rise on the last day we also will appear with him in glory (CCC, n. 1003).

LIFE MATTERS: ROE PLUS 40

With age comes wisdom, or so they say. Roe v. Wade has turned 40. So what have we learned? Forty years later, the Roe decisions references to potential life seem scientifically outdated at best. Even abortion rights activists now concede the basic biological fact that human life begins at conception. Unfortunately, because most have been reticent to publicly admit this, many Americans (including some vocally pro-choice Catholic politicians) still fail to understand that science informs Church teaching in this regard. Forty years later, it is not only theologically obtuse but also scientifically misinformed to make statements like: As a Catholic, I believe life begins at conception, but. We human beings begin our existence when our fathers sperm meets our mothers eggwhether we choose to believe it or not. A human being, in every other context in U.S. history save the era of slavery, has been understood to enjoy certain human rights simply because he or she is human. Today a child, in every context of American law save abortion, merits her parents care and protectionsimply because she is their child. Forty years later the United States continues to have one of the most extreme abortion regimes in the world. Yet were often led to believe that Roe v. Wade merely legalized abortion in the first three months of pregnancy. The trouble is that the Roe Court actually said abortion must be allowed for any reason in the next three months as well. It then said laws against abortion must have a broad health exception even in the final trimester, but only described its breadth in the little known companion case, Doe v. Bolton, decided the same day. In Doe, the Court announced that health, for the purposes of late-term abortion law, would be synonymous with the mothers physical, emotional, psychological, familial wellbeingin other words, every reason a pregnant woman could give for seeking an abortion in the first place. Together Roe and Doe display a dramatic instance of the exception swallowing the rule, making the U.S. one of only nine countries in the world permitting abortion after 14 weeks of pregnancy, and one of only four that allows abortion for any reason after viability, yet most Americans still falsely assume that abortion is strictly limited after the first trimester. Forty years later, womens health is still a central issue, but scientific data does not support abortion access as healthy for women. Beyond dispute, if little known, are the data that show an increased likelihood of preterm birth and placenta previa in subsequent pregnancies, both of which put mother and child at increased risk of health and life-threatening complications. Women who have had abortions are also at increased risk of anxiety, depression and substance abuse. A 2011 meta-analysis (i.e., study of the studies) revealed that more than half of all women experienced mild to severe mental health problems following their abortions, including a 155% increased risk of suicidal behavior. Short-term complications including hemorrhaging, uterine perforation, and infection injure tens of thousands of women each year. Forty years later, abortion is more often than not regarded as a necessary evil: evil, because it takes the innocent, dependent life of a uniquely precious unborn child; necessary, because it is claimed that womens equality depends upon it. But isnt it rather sexist to claim that for a woman to be equal to a man she must have the right to become more like a man (i.e., not pregnant)? Doesnt such a claim tend to promote a devaluation and even rejection of womens capacity to bear children, that very capacity that makes women different from men? Wouldnt authentic equality instead require that men and society at large respect, protect, and support womens childbearing capacity, alongside their many other talents and abilities? Not all women become mothers, but those who have children depend upon a cultural esteem for pregnancy and motherhoodthe nurturing of an individual and unique human beingfor their social and professional support. Indeed, womens physical, emotional, and professional sacrifices endured during pregnancy and beyond would be far more honored and rewarded were we, as a culture, more honest and consistent about the dignity of the human beings entrusted to their care. Forty years later, women from all backgroundsaffluent and highly educated to poor and disadvantagedattest to the difficulty of meeting men worthy of, and willing to commit to, marriage. They may be interesting, talented, ready for fun, yes. Marriageable? Not so much. Herein lies a complex problem with many potential causes. But over the last decade and a half, a number of economists have demonstrated that liberal abortion laws and widespread contraception, especially when acting together, have empowered men to expect or initiate sex without the need or desire for any sort of commitment. Once upon a time, women were in a position to make serious demands upon men prior to physical intimacy, due to the commitment necessary for taking care of a child who may possibly result. Increasingly available contraception and abortion have realigned this set of cultural expectations toward the male prerogative for low commitment sex. Increased confidence in contraception (alongside the continued reality of contraceptive failure) has translated, forty years later, into increased rates of unintended pregnancy, single motherhood, and abortionall of which disproportionately affect women, especially poor women. Forty years later, the pro-life community is as committed as ever to promoting the human dignity of both mother and child. Indeed, it is the vulnerability of all those involved in abortion that makes the issue one of deep and abiding concern. The evident vulnerability of the innocent human being, to be sure, but also the vulnerability of the single mother who feels she has no choice but to abort; the anxious father who has no legal say; the parents whose unborn child appears handicapped or may die shortly after birth; the victim of rape; and even the abortion provider who, we can only hope, will experience a conversion of heart and abandon this trade. Forty years later, the courage and grace shown by those women who choose lifein the face of fear, uncertainty, parental or partner intimidation, seemingly insurmountable oddsmake them todays heroes. They are joined by the many who counsel, support, and nurture them both before and after the birth of their child. Such self-giving loveespecially in the face of forty years of choiceis powerfully transformative of mother, of child, of families, of cultures.

Support for those who need a listening ear. The Upper Room Crisis Hotline provides support services to our priests, deacons, and men and women religious on a national basis. In order to do this, TURCH is in need of additional volunteers to assist the callers. A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In todays gospel, we hear of the ten men afflicted with leprosy, and the one who glorifies God for being healed. It is a dramatic scene of gratitude. But in order for the miracle to happen in the first place, these men had to start walking in faith before their diseased conditions changed one tiny bit. Good stewards of their faith realize that they cannot wait until their problems are over to start walking in faith. They praise God even in the darkest of nights, and in the worst of circumstances. Do we walk in faith, giving the Lord our gratitude even when we are in difficult circumstances?

REGISTRATION: We welcome you as a family member of Christ the King Parish. It is our hope and prayer that you feel at home with us at weekend masses, prayer times, and parish activities. Registration is on the first Sunday of the month in the narthex, after each Mass or come to the parish office during business hours. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM:
Will be on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Arrangements for baptisms are made by attending a preparation meeting. Parish registration is a pre-requisite for attending the meeting. 630.629.1717 x4

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: Please allow eight months of preparation time. Date arrangements are made after the initial meeting with pastor or a representative before any other commitments are made.
