How do you find the use of triangles in getting the sum of the measure of interior angles of a convex The triangle serves as the basic unit of a polygon? polygon. What is the relationship of the sum of the measure of the angles of the triangles and the sum of the measure of the angles of the polygon?

The sum of the measure of the angles of the triangles is also the sum of the measure of the angles of the polygon.

Here are different kinds of polygon. Groups 1 and 2, your task is to compute for the sum of the measure of the interior angles using a protractor. While for groups 3 and 4, you will tabulate the information: Polygon, number of sides, number of triangles formed and compute for the sum of the measure of the interior angles of a given polygon.

5 6 Using these tools is very useful. But what if I ask you to compute for the sum of the measure of interior angles of a 24-sided polygon, would it be convenient? Base on the table; see if you can find a pattern in getting the sum of the measure of the interior angles of a regular polygon. Fill up the table for n-gon.

Sum of the measure of interior angles

n-gon So for the measure of interior angles, we can get its sum using the formula (n-2)180, where n is the number of sides a polygon has and (n-2) stands for the number of triangles formed within the polygon. How about the sum of the measure of exterior angles?

n-2

(n-2)180

Teachers Activity The following sequence shows a shrinking pentagon.

What can you conclude about the sum of the measure of exterior angles of a regular pentagon? The sum of the measure of the exterior angles of the pentagon is 360. Why is that so? Because as the polygon shrinks to its smallest, it shows a complete revolution which is equal to 360. Is it true for all kinds of convex polygons? 3. Generalization How is the triangle related to the formula (n-2)180? The triangle is the basis in getting the measure of the interior angles of polygons. The sum of the measure of the interior angles of a polygon is always a multiple of 180. And we all know that the sum of the measure of the interior angles of a triangle is always equal to 180.

Is it essential to start with the leastsided polygon in discovering such formula? Why? How about the sum of the measure of exterior angles of a polygon? 4. Application Please choose your partner. For this next activity, you will answer these activity sheets provided. You only have 10 minutes to answer, that means you are given 5 minutes each. Write your answers in a sheet of paper.

The sum of the measure of exterior angles of a regular polygon is always 360.

Task A 1. If four angles of a pentagon have measures 100, 96, 87 and 97, find the measure of the fifth angle.

Answers to Task B Let x = y = 5th & 6th angle x + y + 100 + 90 +105 + 75 = (6-2)180 2x + 370 = 720 2x = 720 - 370 2x = 350 x = 175 y = 175

2. If the sum of the measures of two exterior angles of a triangle is 230, find the measure of the third exterior angle and its adjacent interior angle.

Let x = measure of the exterior angle x=y 2x + 300 = 360 2x = 360 300 2x = 60 x = 30

3. One polygon has three more sides than the other. How many more degrees are in the sum of the measure of interior angles of the first polygon?

(14 2)180 = 2160 180n 360 = 2160 180n = 2160 + 360 180n = 2520 n = 14 14-gon

4. The measure of each interior angle of a regular polygon is 36 more than its adjacent exterior angle. How many sides do the polygon has?

Let x = remaining angle 4x + 1000 = (10 2)180 4x = 1440 1000 4x = 440 x = 110

5. Give the formula for finding the measure of an interior angle of a regular polygon.

(n 2)180 n

Task B 1. If four angles of a hexagon have measures 100, 90, 105 and 75 and if the other two angles are congruent, find the measure of each.

Answers to Task A Let x = 5th angle x + 100 + 96 +87 + 97 = (5-2)180 x + 380 = 540 x = 540 - 380 x = 160

2. If the sum of the measures of two exterior angles of a quadrilateral is 300, and the other two exterior angles are congruent, find the measure of each.

Let x = measure of the 3rd exterior angle y = adjacent interior angle 230 + x = 360 x = 360 230 x = 130 y y = 180 130 = 50

3. The sum of the measure of the interior angles of a polygon is between 2100 and 2400. How many sides does the polygon have?

Let n = 3, n + 3 = 6 (n 2)180 = (3 2)180 = 180 [(n + 3) 2]180 [6 2]180 = [4]180 = 720 720 180 = 540

4. In a decagon, the sum of the measure of the first six interior angles totals 1000. If the remaining four angles have equal measures, find each of the remaining angles.

180 36 = 144 144/2 = 72 (n 2)180 = 108 n (n 2)180 = 108n 180n 360 = 108n 72n = 360 n=5 pentagon (n 2)180 N

5. Give the formula for finding the measure of an interior angle of a regular polygon.

IV.

Evaluation: On a sheet of paper, crosswise, answer the following: Given the number of sides of a regular polygon, find the measure of each interior angle. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 4 7 8 10 12

V.

Assignment: Tell whether the statement is true or false. Justify your answer. 1. The larger the number of sides of a polygon, the greater the sum of the measure of its interior angles. 2. The larger the number of sides of a polygon, the greater the sum of the measure of its exterior angles. 3. The larger the number of sides of a regular polygon, the smaller the measure of each interior angles. 4. The larger the number of sides of a regular polygon, the smaller the measure of each exterior angles. 5. The sum of the measure of the interior angles is always a multiple of 180.
