Conference: A conference is the act of consulting together (exchange of views and information). It is the nucleus of the in-service nursing programs. Nursing Care Conference Nursing care conference is a group discussion using problem solving techniques to determine the ways of providing care for the patients to whom students are assigned as a part of their clinical experience. Sources of problem solving discussion: Objective of clinical nursing program. Patients Students Nursing care conference as a method of teaching: It is an opportunity for formal discussion by free exchange of knowledge and experience on a common problem. To design a nursing care conference a) There should be consultation visit from a clinical nurse practitioner. b) It must be planned around some aspect of nursing care or scientific focus of a nursing problem presented by the patient. c) It must be based on the course of an action discussion. i.e., assessing the nursing problem, helping the staff to examine clients problem.

Planning and preparation for nursing care conference: Organizers should prepare well in advance. Before presenting the subject must be planned on objectives. The student must be aware of the data regarding a case. Students must be given an opportunity to work in ward for little time before presenting the conference. Techniques used to conduct Nursing Care Conference: Should be a consultation tool Flexible Should involved all students Provide time to think Advantage: Helps the students to collect information in a creative way, validates the data systematically. Provides a real practical experience and environment to the students. Fortifies the thinking of students. Active participation. Disadvantage: Has little used if the students do not accustom with the situation. Conference hours may be utilized for class room teaching

Opening phase: Defined as the first two minutes of the conference. To make a commitment to work on a problem relating to a particular patient. Often set a tone for the entire session.

Working phase: The task is to arrive at a consensus on problem identification and solution. Helps the group to focus their discussion by asking direct question, rephrasing the words said by group and summarizing. If the consultant and group view the absent data as critical to the solution, time is better spent to get the facts than speculation. problems are identified and the group can often reach its own solution. offering concrete solutions to the problem consultant should be careful to ask on the groups opinion on the validity of her suggestion.

Closing phase: The main task is to delegate the responsibility to one or more staff to act on the problems continuously.

Nursing Team Conference The assignment method should be used which will make possible the best nursing care to the patient, provide the best experience to staff members, giving them interest and challenge and that will keep the unit functioning smoothly and effectively. Objectives: Identify the patient nursing problem. Recognized ability and limitation of various team members. Helps to communicate the ideas, information related nursing care. Utilized scientific information to influence the cause of nursing care. Make generation from specific information that is factual. Conference procedure: Planned time each day for the members of the team nursing team to meet as a group. During this period, patients problems are identified and explored and an approach is developed by the team. The nursing care plan are revised or further developed according to changing needs of patients. Each members of the group is recorded during the course of the day and the response of the patient to her care, question and comments of the patient and individual notes are used as guides in conference. The team leader, using kardex as a guide, reads the patients name and objective of nursing care. Problems are identified by the group, a plan is project for the solution of the problem.

Seminar A seminar is, generally, a form of academic instruction, either at an academic institution or offered by a commercial or professional organization. A small group of advanced students in a college or graduate school engaged in original research or intensive study under the guidance of a professor who meets regularly with them to discuss their reports and findings. Function: bringing together small groups for recurring meetings, focusing each time on some particular subject, in which everyone present is requested to actively participate. Objective: to give the students the opportunity to participate in methods of scientific analysis and research procedures.

* The idea behind the seminar system is to familiarize students more extensively with the methodology of their chosen subject and also to allow them to interact with examples of the practical problems that always occur during research work. It is essentially a place where assigned readings are discussed, questions can be raised and debates can be conducted. It is relatively informal, at least compared to the lecture system of academic instruction. The seminar group preferably is limited to 10-15 students, with a maximum of 25. The duration is usually 1-2 hours. Socratic Seminar Purpose The purpose of a Socratic Seminar is to achieve a deeper understanding about the ideas and values in a text. In the Seminar, participants systematically question and examine issues and principles related to a particular content, and articulate different points-of-view. The group conversation assists participants in constructing meaning through disciplined analysis, interpretation, listening, and participation. Background In a Socratic Seminar, the participants carry the burden of responsibility for the quality of the discussion. Good discussions occur when participants study the text closely in advance, listen actively, share their ideas and questions in response to the ideas and questions of others, and search for evidence in the text to support their ideas. The discussion is not about right answers; it is not a debate. Students are encouraged to think out loud and to exchange ideas openly while examining ideas in a rigorous, thoughtful, manner.

A Socratic discussion is a text-based discussion in which an individual sets their own interpretations of the text alongside those of other participants. The aim is a mutual search for a clearer, wider and deeper (enlarged) understanding of the ideas, issues, and values in t he text at hand. It is shared inquiry, not debate; there is no opponent save the perplexity all persons face when they try to understand something that is both difficult and important.

Case Analysis Is a method of teaching and learning in which a concrete case is presented for analysis and discussion by a group of students.

It is used to determine what problems in a specific case or situation need to be solved and then to solve the problems posed by the case. Case Problems are prepared for discussion by a group which present facts surrounding a problem, such as human relational one. They should be presented that the student can visualize the position of some person or group in the situation.

Each case should call for a choice to be made among reasonably possible alternatives; it must call for a judgment or decision. Assumptions underlying the use of case analysis in teaching: 1. Students can learn from each other 2. Students can take responsibility for their own learning 3. Focusing attention or appropriate student group participation will result in effective learning 4. Students must prepare extensively and thoroughly in advance of discussion to participate effectively in group analysis and decision 5. Students are responsible for their own conclusions they cannot rest on the instructors judgment. 6. The teachers role changes from one who hands down decisions from on high to one who leads and summarizes group discussion. Objectives of the Case Analysis: 1. To develop a mind that has the power to transfer from familiar types of problems to new ones and to be able to explain intelligently the basis for a decision. 2. To develop the ability to master a tangle of circumstantial evidence, selecting important factors from a whole set of facts and weighing their importance in the context of the base. 3. To develop the abilities to utilize ideas, to test them against the facts of the problems, to examine ideas and facts and to discuss ways which make them appropriate for the solution of the problem. 4. To develop the ability to use the data from experience as a test of validity of the ideas already obtained with flexibility to revise goals and procedures when the need arises. 5. To develop the ability to communicate thoughts to others in a way this stimulates further thoughts. 6. To develop the ability to use ideas in theoretical form, to create a framework of general propositions from problem-solving experiences. Techniques of the case analysis method of teaching: 1. Establishment of atmosphere: The teacher must establish a permissive, non authoritarian atmosphere, so that student will feel free to put forth their ideas and their questions without the teachers reacting in the form of rejection, blame or authoritarian in junctions to think along certain lines preferred by the instructor.

2. Student Preparation for Discussion of the case: One of the most important preludes to productive group discussion of a case is a step by step analysis of the case facts beforehand, so that the discussion will be relevant and meaningful.
