MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow in the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I thought that the water molecules would flow into the egg because it goes from an area of high concentration, the white distilled vinegar, to an area of low concentration, the egg. I can predict that because the egg is 75% water, and the vinegar is about 95% water. With all the water molecules coming into the egg, that will cause the egg to expand in size. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 3 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14 16.2 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 With Egg: 262 Without Egg: 230 4 16.0 With Egg: 245 Without Egg: 195 OBSERVATIONS 50ml displacement bubble on shell Part of egg not in water still had shell Foam in the water Dark lines inside egg Feels like jello

CONCLUSION To figure out what the power of osmosis is, we put a egg in vinegar for four days. When the vinegar dissolved the eggshell, it made it easier for the osmosis, water. The starting circumference of the egg was 14 cm. After one day of being in the vinegar and water mix, it expanded 2.6 cm to a 16.2 cm total. After 4 days our groups egg expanded .1 cm less than the 7th grade average. Before the experiment I hypothesized that the water molecules in the vinegar were going to flow into the egg. My hypothesis was correct.

ANALYSIS 1) The vinegar is a weak acid that dissolved the eggshell. CO2 (bubbles) were produced when the vinegar reacted with the shell. After a couple of days in the vinegar, the shell then dissolved. 2) Period 7 group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. 1.481481481 was the average rate of egg expansion through the whole 7th grade. The groups got different results because they probably didnt measure right or there was a factor gone wrong. 3) Cells need water because it helps them carry out their daily uses and needs. For example the cytoplasm in the cell consists mainly of water and dissolved nutrients, wastes, ions, proteins and other molecules.
