The purpose of the Motorized Grader Module is to provide you with the skills and knowledge required to use a grader to perform basic horizontal operations, that you, as a grader operator, must perform effectively in a combat and peacetime environment. NOTE: Inform the students of the terminal learning objective, action, condition, and standard.

Perform Operator's Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) on a motorized grader Given a motorized grader; PPE, TM 5-3805-261-10; LO 5-3805261-12, rags; a grease gun; DA Form 5988-E or 2404, a pen or pencil, and guided instruction on PMCS. Performed operator's PMCS on the motorized grader utilizing the PMCS table in TM 5-3805-280-10. Described the difference between before, during, after, weekly, and monthly operator's PMCS. Annotated all deficiencies on DA Form 5988-E, corrected all operator deficiencies, and gave the DA Form 5988-E to the maintenance supervisor.

NOTE: SHOW SLIDE #2 NOTE: Briefly review the general safety requirements, risk assessments, and environmental considerations associated with this lesson. Know and adhere to all hand signals. Wear safety goggles and gloves when checking batteries, hydraulic tank and fueling grader. Maintain three points of contact when mounting or dismounting. Ground all attachments before dismounting. Conduct a 360 degree walk-around before mounting and after dismounting. Wear hearing protection, hard hats, and seat belts when operating the equipment. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Always look to the rear when backing up. Raise blade before backing up. Use caution when working on hills, banks, or slopes to avoid tipping. DO NOT place transmission in neutral to allow the grader to coast.

Avoid unnecessary stripping and damage to vegetation and waterways. Control dust conditions and limit water erosion by dressing area at the end of each day. Avoid unnecessary equipment usage and follow established procedures for cleanup of fluid leaks. Restore site and surrounding areas as close as possible to the original ecological condition.

STANDARDS:

NOTE: The first 30 minutes of this block of training is intended to be refresher to the prerequisite dL phase. NOTE: Review equipment mounting and dismounting procedures, equipment operation, and personal safety requirements. Explain that 25 minutes will be used at the beginning and end of each day for before and after operations maintenance. Time (0.5) will be deducted from PMCS P.E. time. Conduct the practical exercise with instructor supervision. Instructor and assistants will evaluate each student, make on the spot corrections, and provide immediate feedback. A. Practical Exercise Instructions 1) Give detailed instructions on what is expected during each practical exercise. 2) Ensure students have required materials and references. 3) Clarify students' questions. 4) Conduct the practical exercise. 5) Check on students' progress and provide assistance as necessary throughout the exercise. 6) Ensure students complete the practical exercise within the allotted time.

7) Provide solutions to the practical exercise. B. Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services 1) Identifies and performs before operations maintenance checks in accordance with appropriate reference(s). 2) Corrects all operator level deficiencies. 3) Annotates all non-operator level deficiencies on the correct maintenance form(s). 4) Performs grader starting procedures. 5) Successfully manipulates blade into desired positions. 6) Understands and follows hand signals. 7) Performs all subtasks within safety guidelines. C. Safety 1) Hard hats will be worn when on or around the equipment. 2) Use three points of contact when climbing in, on or out of the equipment. 3) Remain aware of your surroundings. 4) Wear your seat belt. 5) Sound "FIRE IN THE HOLE" prior to starting the equipment. 6) When acting as the ground guide, always maintain eye to eye contact with the operator. 7) If you have a ground guide, remember they are in control. "PAY ATTENTION" 8) At the first sign of lighting, dismount the equipment and find shelter. D. Park line position 1) The blade is pitched all the way forward. 2) The toe of the blade is 3 to 4 feet behind the right front tire. 3) The left lift cylinder heel is straight up and down. 4) The blade is lightly touching the ground (no excessive down pressure). 5) The scarifier teeth are lightly touching the ground (same as the blade). E. Carry position NOTE: Execute this maneuver from the park line position.

1) Fully raise the scarifier log. 2) Raise the moldboard off the surface approximately 4" to 6. 3) Pitch the blade all the way to the rear. 4) Center shift all the way to the left. 5) Circle the blade counterclockwise until the toe and heel are within the parameters of the right front tire and left rear tandem tire, approximately 45 degrees. 6) Raise the toe and heel of the moldboard. The toe cylinder is raised fully and the heel cylinder is raised until the moldboard is level. NOTE: Pay particular attention while circling the blade to avoid hitting or damaging the scarifier or step. F. Review Determine if students have learned the material presented by: 1) Soliciting student questions and explanations. 2) Asking questions and receiving answers from the students. 3) Correcting student misunderstandings. NOTE: Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity.
