Detail Outline 1. Title Should the use of nuclear energy be encouraged? 2.

. Introduction Demanding of energy increase rapidly- due to population growth rising standard of living Depleting of non-renewal sources such as fossil fuels and natural gas. Nuclear energy Provide sufficient and reliable source of energy environmentally friendly- emits less greenhouse gases Risk of using nuclear energy- dangerous storage of radioactive waste high cost of building nuclear facilities may lead to disaster if nuclear accident occurs. Leads to controversy whether nuclear energy should be encouraged.

3. Physics relevance Nuclear energy released by the nucleus of Uranium in the reactor in the form of gamma radiation, alpha and beta radiation known as Radioactive Decay. Nuclear fission small uncharged particle- collide with large unstable Uranium atoms Uranium atoms split and releasing energy Heat energy produced to heat up the water until steam is formed steam turn turbines which produces energy.

4. Nuclear energy should be encouraged Clean Energy source o Renewable- does not pollute the environment o Produces less than plant (Cravens 2008) Reliable and Efficient o Produce greater amount of energy than non-renewable energy. o Generate high amount of energy compared to generating energy by burning of coal. o Nuclear power plant has a life cycle of 40 years. carbon dioxide gas compared to coal and gas energy

5. Nuclear energy should not be encouraged Possibility of nuclear accidents o Caused by natural disasters or human mistakes(OHara, 2008) o Leakage of ionizing radiation- poses risk to human health and pollutes the environment (Cantoria, 2010).

Construction of nuclear power plant is costly o Investment for nuclear power plant up to 10 billion to 20 billion dollars (OHara, 2008) o Cost increase due to limited production of Uranium o Proper disposal of nuclear waste- require extra cost (OHara, 2008).

6. Conclusion Should not be encouraged- expensive may cause leakage of ionizing radiation pollute the environment Alternative renewable sources Wind energy, solar energy to overcome energy crisis
