JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD II B.TECH II SEMREGULAR/SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATIONS MAY - 2010 STRENGTH OF MATERIALS II (CIVIL ENGINEERING) Time: 3hours Max.Marks:80 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks --1. Using maximum principal stress theory, calculate the diameter of a mild steel bar subjected to an axial pull of 10 kN and a transverse shear of 5 kN. Take the elastic [16] limit in simple tension as 240 N/mm2 and factor of safety 3. Derive the deflection formula for an open coiled helical spring subjected to an axial load. [16] State and Explain the assumptions in Eulers formula? Find the critical load for a standard rolled steel angle 50 50 6 (ISA 5050) column 2m long (E = 210 GN/m2 and proportional limit stress in simple compression = 210 MN/m2). Assume that the column has rounded ends. [8+8] A mild steel strut of T-section (120mm width of flange, 80mm deep, 10mm thickness of web and flange) carries a load of 100kN in the central plane bisecting the web at 30mm from the bottom of web. Calculate the maximum and minimum intensities of stresses induced in the section. Sketch the stress distribution. [16] A short C.I. Pillar 80mm in external diameter and 10mm thick carrys a load of 200kN. If the load deviates from the center by 20mm calculate the extreme intensities of stresses induced in the section. What deviation will just cause tension in the pillar? Sketch the stress distribution. [16] A simply supported beam of rectangular section (150 200mm) is of span 6m. It carries two point loads of 5KN each at third points. The plane of the load makes an angle of 300 with the vertical plane of symmetry. Find the direction of neutral axis and the bending stresses at the top two corners. [16] A semi circular beam is supported on three equally spaced columns. Derive expressions for maximum B.M. and maximum Twisting moment by first obtaining the general expressions. [16]
