BACKGROUND
Microseismic monitoring is an important surveillance tool for reservoir development management. However, making informed decisions about improving an oil and gas reservoir model, based upon microseismic data, is a challenge due to its intrinsic complexity, the highdimensionality, and the high degree of uncertainty.

RESULTS
FractVis
Visualizing microseismic events coming from two treatment wells sized by magnitude. Visual correlation of microseismic data attributes using novel elements such as color-based correlation

Petrographic data represent detailed description of the rocks, and the analysis of such data helps the characterization of the hydrocarbon reservoir. However, a good characterization involves many challenges due to the complexity and the scale of the data to be analyzed.

The effect of shadow boxes over the PC: (a) show the normal filtering with a single filter box, (b) show the effect of two shadow boxes and how they result in a small partial context, and (c) show the effect of activating six shadow boxes to increase the partial context.

PetroVis
Main interface for the visual analysis of petrographic characteristics

MOTIVATION
In the work of domain engineers, they often use commercial computational tools with traditional visualizations (such as scatter plots) in order to analyze and correlate their data. Yet, pure (standard) visualization methods may not be enough to address the dimensionality issues inherent in their data. Such issues, however, could be simplified by augmenting the visualization with intuitive forms of interactions to tailor them to the expectations of these experts.

New interactions inspired by proxemics & painting-metaphor to facilitate 3D microseismic events exploration

METHODOLOGY
To address our research goals, we developed three visualization prototypes with our domain collaborators: FractVis: a visualization system developed to enable exploration of microseismic data. PetroVis: a visualization system developed to support petrographic experts in analyzing their data. Another prototype based on FractVis with unique interactions tailored to facilitate navigation and exploration of the 3D microseismic data.
