PENNSYLVANIA Chapter

Founded in 1982, the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) a national network comprised of 28 chapters throughout the United States gathers and promotes the history of Filipino Americans. After decades of advocacy led by FANHS and friends, the U.S. Congress and Senate passed their first resolutions making October Filipino American History Month in 2009. @FANHS_national http://fanh-national.org October 5, 2011 The Senate adopted the following by unanimous consent: *A resolution designating October 2011 as Filipino American History Month. (S.Res. 287)

Excerpts from the RESOLUTION : Resolved, That the Senate-(1) designates October 2011 as `Filipino American History Month'; (2) recognizes the celebration of Filipino American History Month as-(A) a study of the advancement of Filipino Americans; (B) a time of reflection and remembrance of the many notable contributions Filipino Americans have made to the United States; and (C) a time to renew efforts toward the research and examination of history and culture in order to provide an opportunity for all people in the United States to learn and appreciate more about Filipino Americans and their historic contributions to the United States; and (3) urges the people of the United States to observe Filipino American History Month with appropriate programs and activities.
Working in partnership with the Filipino American Association of Philadelphia, Inc. (FAAPI) in 2012 FANHS PA co-sponsored a full year of events commemorating 100 Years of Filipino American achievement in Greater Philadephia. Councilman David Oh presented the regions first Filipino American History Month Resolution during FANHS PAs 2012 celebration.

FANHS PA Chapter Highlights With Scribe Video Center, co-produced the short documentary, St. Augustine Church, Philadelphia: Immigration & Filipino Transformation that screened at the Philadelphia Film Festival (2007) Presented a panel at the FANHS National Conference in Anchorage, Alaska (2008) Hosted the Philadelphia meeting of FANHS national trustees (2007) Sponsored An Evening with Filipino American Writers -Book signing/readings (2007) Organized Filipino American film screenings at Temple and Drexel Universities (2008 & 2009) Hosted international photographer Rick Rocamora, launching his book on Filipino Veterans (2008) Hosted speakers for Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue (FIND) since 2006 Taught Filipino American Studies: An Integrated Curriculum at Drexel University (2009) Organized a concert and guided tours of the Smithsonians Filipino American history exhibit, Singgalot: The Ties that Bind, brought to Philadelphia by FISDU, FECGP, the Asian American Womens Coalition (AAWC) and Drexel (2010) Sponsored its annual signature Filipino American History Celebration Banquet since 2008 featuring noted speakers Juanita Tamayo-Lott, Gem Daus, Domingo Los Baos and the screening of The Mountain Thief

Poet/Professor @EmilyLawsin of Detroit speaks at FANHS PAs Evening with Filipino American Writers featuring authors from Alaska, Michigan, Washington, Virginia and California in 2007.

FANHS PA & FISDU hosted a 2008 screening of Untold Triumph, a film on Filipino veterans produced by Domingo Los Baos of Hawaii who eventually keynoted FANHS PAs Filipino American History Month Celebration in 2011. Working with AAWC, FECGP, FISDU and Drexel, FANHS PA led tours of the Smithsonians Singgalot exhibit on Filipino American history in 2010. @APASmithsonian
