communityactivitiesandintiatives,andotherallieswithinyourtargetcommunity. Becometheaffilaiteexpertinyourtargetcommunity,includingmappingassets,compilingitshistory,andlearningto representthecommunitysviewpoint. GettoknowtheHabitatstaff,departments,andhowtheyinteracttohelpyouworkmosteffectivelyandbeneficiallywithin theorganization. Developacommunityengagementplanforyourcommunity,includingkeyaims,anticipatedoutcomes/benefits,an outreachplan,monitoring/evaluation,andkeymessagestogetherwiththeCECandstaff.Considerstrategicpointsof contact,messaging,mutualfit,relationshipbuilding,andhowHabitatcanbestplugintocommunities.
Action: TheoverallgoaloftheCELsistopositivelyengagethecommunityaroundwherewebuild,bothoffsiteandon.AsaCEL,youwillbe expectedtofindthebestapproach,balancingtimeoutinthecommunitywithtimeonsite,ensuringyourresponsibilitiesaremetin eacharea.EachCELwillbeassignedasiteaswellasaspecificcommunityordemographic(i.e.,thelocalcommunityaroundyour assignedconstructionsite,VeteransinKingCounty,youthorfaithbasedvolunteergroups,otherAmeriCorpsprogramsperforming overlappingservicetothecommunity,etc.)tobuildrelationshipswithandengagewithHabitatthroughouttheterm. Research&discussweeklyvolunteergroupsexpectedinadvanceofbuilddays,includingcoordinatorsorVIPs,andbe preparedtospecificallygreetgroupleadersontheirbuilddays.Whenappropriate,makecontactwithvolunteergroup leadersinadvance. WorkalongsidevolunteersandConstructionVolunteerLeadsonsitewhenappropriate,gettingtoknowourvolunteersand buildrelationships.Occasionallyleadcrewsofvolunteerswithinyourabilities,whenneeded. Attendcommunitybasedmeetingsorplanningsessions. Helpidentify,screen,andexecuteHabitatprojects(repairs,rehabs,etc)withintargetcommunity. GenerateandparticipateinorhelpleadcommunityprojectswithpartnersonbehalfofHabitat. Overseephotoand/orvideodocumentationofprojectsandbuilddaysincludinguploadingtoHabitatServers/dropbox. Ensurecommentcardsarecompletedbyallvolunteersonsiteattheendoftheday,andfollowupasneeded,in consultationwiththeteam,tothankhappyvolunteersoraddresscomplaints. Sharevaluablefeedbackwithstafffromourcommunitythatsuggestdirectionsforfurthercommunityengagement, improvementstoourvolunteerprogram,andkeysupportersforfollowuporfurtherrelationship. PresentcommunityreportstotheSeniorLeadershipTeamandallstaffmeetings. Utilizemobilecomputingtechtohandleinthemomentvolunteer&eventregistration,sharingofinformation,,entering contactinformationandhistoryintoourCRMdatabase,etc. Note:CEactivitieswillvarybasedonyourtargetcommunity,whichcouldbeeithergeographicallyordemographicallydefined. Dependingonyourtargetcommunityandsupervisor'sdirection,yourresponsibilitiesmayvary.Yourutlimategoalistosecure sustainedlocalinterest,ownershipandaccountabilityinyourcommunity,includingcrosssectoralliancesandgrassrootsleadership. 2) ShareHabitat'sstories,goals,opportunities,hospitality,andspiritwithoursupportersbothonandoffsite,towardengaging themmoredeeplywithHabitat'swork. Preparationandtraining: Learntoarticulatethesocioeconomicbenefitsofhomeownershipandfactorsaffectingtheavailabilityofaffordable housing. KeepabreastofcurrentstatisticsandtalkingpointsrelatedtoHabitatlocallyandworldwide,toshareinconversationwith communitiesandsupporters. Action: Beonhandasthefirsttogreetvolunteerswhentheyarriveonconstructionsites:welcoming,helpingthemsignin,and engaginginfriendlyconversationuntilconstructionstaffisreadytobegin. Arrangeandguidetoursonsiteforpotentialorcurrentcommunitypartnersorallies. Withsiteteams,identifyandreportonoutstandingactsofserviceandpositiveimpactsseenonsiteorinthecommunity. ProvideinformationtotheHabitatmarketingdepartmentformediaandwebsiteoutreach. MakecommunityintroductionstokeyHabitatstaff,AmeriCorps,andvolunteers. HelpdocumentandshareourCommunityEngagementactivitiesandpracticesontheground,forsharingwithother Habitataffiliates,orforfuturevolunteersoremployeesassumingyourduties. DistributeHabitatmaterialsandliteraturetooursitesandcommunities. Managehospitalitysystemsandlogisticsonsite,includingsigninareas,refreshments,lunchorderingandsetup,supply shopping,literatureracksandsignage,&generalvolunteerareacleanlinessandorganization. Inspire,identify,train,andcultivatevolunteersfromthecommunitytoassumesomeorallofyourCEduties.
Requirements,ServiceSiteEnvironment,&PersonalVehicle
Physical&MentalRequirements Membersinthisrolemusthave abilityto: Focuswellonthetaskathand whileothersworkondifferent tasks. Maintainprofessionaldecorum andemail/computer responsibilitiesworkingfroma constructionsite. Keepyourselfwarminoutdoor environmentswithoutmuch physicalactivity. Dressappropriatelyforbothsite serviceandcommunitymeetings. Occasionallyparticipateinwork outside,onladders,scaffolding, andonyourfeetforextended periods,andlift30lbs.

ServiceSiteEnvironment CELswilleachbeassignedaconstructionsiteorteam,as wellasanexternalcommunityordemographictoengage. Yourservicewillbesplitbetweenthesetwoenvironments. Youwillreporttotheconstructionsite/teameachday,and eitherperformhostingdutiesthereordepartfor communityengagements,orboth.Youwillberesponsible forarrangingyourscheduleandplanningaccordingly. Onallsites,safetyofself&othersisfirstpriority.Personal safetyequipmentisprovidedtoallAmeriCorpsmembers whileworkingontheconstructionsite.Whenyou participateinconstructiontasks,serviceisoftenphysically demanding,strenuous&attimesfastpaced.Tasksinvolve lifting&carryingofmaterials.Siteservicetakesplace outsideregardlessofinclementweather.Membersare responsibleforprovidingthemselveswithraingear& appropriatesturdyboots(reimbursementstipend provided.)
