If you need to stay in a hotel until you can secure housing, there are some hotels near the university. Be sure the taxi
driver understands the name and address of the hotel to which you want to be taken. The following are three suggested
hotels near the University:

Transportation
Dallas Area Rapid Transit Systems (DART) buses stop on the UTD campus. A Dart Pass costs approximately $700.00
per year. For more current information, please visit http://www.dart.org/riding.asp?zeon=DARTFares. Many international
students find it necessary to own an automobile, motorcycle, or bicycle. There are many car dealers in the area of the
university. Newspapers are also an excellent source for used vehicles. Most used vehicles can be purchased for
between $1000 and $9000.

Mandatory Tuberculosis Testing

All students born outside the United States are required to take a Mantoux Tuberculosis test prior to their arrival at UTD.
The TB test results should be sent to the Student Health Center as soon as possible, preferably 30 days prior to your
arrival on campus. Registration for classes will not be permitted until test results are reviewed and approved.
All testing is at the student’s expense. If you have taken a TB test or chest x-ray within 12 months of registration, the
Health Center will consider the testing if you provide original written documentation. If the documentation is accepted,
you are not required to retake the TB test. The TB documentation form can be printed from the web site
http://www.utdallas.edu/healthcenter/utdhealthcenter-forms.html

Health Insurance
Medical and dental expenses in the United States are extremely high. Therefore, all F and J visa status international
students are required to maintain health insurance while enrolled at UTD. Please be advised that student health
insurance coverage does not begin until the first day of classes.

This UTD endorsed Plan is also available to all other enrolled students. Please call 972-883-6161 for information on how
to purchase this insurance.

UTD’s present Student Health Insurance Plan costs approximately $835.00 per year for the student, $3,225.00 for the
student and spouse, and an additional $1,281.00 per child. Please note that these figures are approximate and may
change.

Scholarships
There are a small number of very competitive merit-based scholarships available that are awarded to undergraduate
students. Freshmen applicants to The University of Texas at Dallas are automatically considered for these
scholarships. Transfer applicants may obtain a scholarship application through the Office of Undergraduate Education’s
web site at www.utdallas.edu/dept/ugraddean/scholar.html.

Employment
No international student should plan to earn money in the United States through employment.

*Part-time employment on campus is permitted for F-1 students, but the competition for these jobs is extremely high.
To work off-campus, you must be an F-1 student for at least one academic year. Then you must meet strict eligibility
requirements to be granted employment authorization. You should not plan to earn money through employment while in
the United States.

*Teaching and Research Assistants are an exception to this rule. There are a few teaching and research assistantships
available to UTD students. To apply, contact the head of your Graduate Program.

Weather
The weather in Dallas is very hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Temperatures in summer stay around 100
degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). Temperatures in winter sometimes drop as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-7
degrees Celsius). Please bring appropriate clothing, including a winter coat.

Immigration Requirements: Entering the United States on a Student Visa (F-1 or J-1)

You should never plan to enter the United States on a tourist visa if you plan to study. Before entering the United States
on a student visa, you must have several immigration documents. All are required in order to enter the United States,
and it often takes several months to receive them from the appropriate agency. Plan far in advance so that you will be
able to attend The University of Texas at Dallas for the semester that you wish. The following documents are required:

5
• Passport: Apply for a passport from your country of citizenship. This process can take anywhere from 1-6
months.

• I-20 or DS-2019: You will receive the I-20 or DS-2019 from UTD after submitting the appropriate documents (see
Immigration Requirements/Applying for an I-20). The I-20 is used to obtain an F-1 visa and the DS-2019 is used to
obtain a J-1 visa.

• Visa: Apply for an F-1 or J-1 student visa at the United States embassy or consulate in your home country. At a
minimum, you must bring your passport, your I-20 or DS-2019, original financial information showing that you can
support yourself during your stay in the US, and proof that you intend to return to your home country after
completion of your studies. Contact the US embassy or consulate in your home country to determine if any
additional documentation is required.

Once you have your passport, I-20 or DS-2019, and visa, you may enter the United States. At the port of entry to the
US, you will be given a small white card called an I-94. An inspector will take your I-94 and your I-20 (or DS-2019) and
stamp them to verify where and when you entered the United States. You will need to make copies of these
documents and bring them to the International Student Orientation.

Arriving at The University of Texas at Dallas

International students are not permitted to enter the United States more than 30 days prior to the report date listed on
the I-20 or DS-2019. You should plan to arrive in Dallas several days before the International Orientation. This will
allow you some days to make housing arrangements and become familiar with the campus and the surrounding area.
You should arrive no later than the day preceding the International Orientation. The Orientation will include important
information concerning registration, immigration requirements, and University policies and procedures. A general
introduction to the campus and community will also be included. All students with F-1 and J-1 status must attend
and will not be able to register for classes until they have completed this requirement.

The minimum amount of money a student should have with him/her when arriving in Dallas is $8500.00 (preferably in
Traveler's Checks), to cover tuition, fees, books, and several months' living expenses. International students should
plan to keep a balance equal to at least one month's living expenses on deposit in a Dallas bank at all times. Some
countries have local government restrictions that regulate the conversion of the required amounts of money into U.S.
dollars. It is very important for you to be aware of any such regulations. Before you leave your country, make
arrangements for the transfer of funds for a period of at least one year. Be sure you know the procedure for securing
the transfer of the funds for the second year of study.

You should obtain at least $100 in U.S. currency before leaving your country. All international airports in the U.S.
have an international banking service, but the rate of exchange is often less favorable than in your country. Not all of
these services will be open after 6:00 p.m. at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. We recommend that the remainder of the
money you will need during your first month in the United States (approximately $6000.00) be in U.S. Traveler's
Checks.

If you need assistance with transportation from the airport to a hotel, these services are available through many
campus groups. Please go to the International Student Services website at
www.utdallas.edu/student/international/new/arrival.html for details.
