The Wheatland County Division 2 election forum, held on Oct. 7 in the Gleichen Community Hall, brought out many issues affecting Division 2 over the past four years. I have decided to run for council because I believe its time for a new voice to represent both the hamlets and rural issues. We have issues that need to be addressed, said Division 2 candidate Ian Mast. Mast, along with Russell Smith, Kevin Miller, Colin Smith, Rex Harwood and Jacki Kirk, are all hoping to be the voice that helps solves issues for the division during the next four years. I was happy to find out there were six candidates, with five here tonight. That means we are an active community, we are involved in the community and we are concerned about it, said Colin Smith. Rex Harwood was unable to attend the forum. The candidates outlined several issues they say need attention in the county, including the lack of development or business growth; crumbling infrastructure in hamlets; lack of communication between Wheatland County and its residents; the opposition of residents to the closing of local schools; the need for clean drinking water; and the need for improvements for interrelationships between other towns, hamlets, rural areas and the Siksika reserve. There was a call for a public accounting of money spent and area needs assessments to be done by Wheatland County. It was suggested the Municipal Development Plan and Area Service Plans needed changes to aid development and commercial/industrial investment in the region. The idea of hiring an economic development officer was suggested and whether industrial areas outside of current established zones could be allowed. A question from the audience prompted a discussion that small business permits needed to be developed, rather than requiring all businesses to go through the lengthy development permit process. It was suggested improved curb appeal and unsightly property cleanup would boost property value and increased investment in the community. Exorbitant utility hook-up fees were said to deter people from moving into county hamlets. A 711 number for direct dispatch of bylaw officers was suggested. Some candidates said when Gleichen went to hamlet status, maintenance had suffered. A dedicated maintenance person assigned to the hamlets was one preferred solution. Others suggested seasonal public works assignments with regular follow-up on the projects. It was put forward that residents should be able to talk to public works staff for maintenance requests, rather than addressing issues to the councillor for referral. Continued on Page 2

Hoping to bring a helping hand to Strathmore High

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Strathmore High School (SHS) is seeking ways to ensure its students are supported in various ways, including helping with field trips and perhaps offering a breakfast and/or lunch program at the school. But finding the funding needed to implement various programs can be a problem. Recently, the school submitted an application to the large funding category of the AVIVA Community Fund competition, an annual competition that is changing Canadian communities by bringing great ideas to life, according to Aviva Insurance, the company responsible for the competition. SHSs entry into the competition, entitled Helping Hands, is designed as a bursary type program that will help students in need. According to SHS principal Gary Reagan, SHS staff has always tried to find ways to help kids whose parents cannot afford some of the basic things, such as money for fields trips and sports and so on. It would be a bursary program to support kids at the school who need help with curricular field trips, or a breakfast/lunch program or kids who need support outside the school as well, on a temporary basis, he said. We know our student population well enough that theres a significant portion that I think would access and benefit from some bursary support. Reagan said that in addition, a co-curricular program would allow kids to engage in different relationships that are supportive and fun, building character, self esteem and connections. Participation in co-curricular programs is a tremendous way for kids to build connections with others kids, because otherwise their connections are limited to the friends that they have or choose to have, and their classmates, he noted. Its a wonderful way for kids to grow as individuals. I know what it can do for kids, and if the kids are not able to participate, theyre missing out on so much. The school first found out about the AVIVA Community Fund competition through Heather Robertson at Action Insurance Group. The brokerage is supportive of SHSs Helping Hands idea, and wants to help spread awareness. Its all about giving back to the community and finding something that is near and dear to our hearts, and kids are a big deal to us, said Janelle Pettifer, a personal account manager with Action Insurance Group. Each idea submitted in the AVIVA Community Fund competition moves forward through a voting process. There are three chances to have one of the top 30 ideas and move to the next round of voting. If we can be one of the top 10 ideas in the large funding group, then we move on to the semi-finals. If not, we still have round three to try again. If we get into the semi-finals, then again it is voting. After that it is judging, said Pettifer. It really is simple, you register once. You can go onto Facebook and all you have to do is click vote now, it really is that simple; you can vote once a day. She said it is easy as a society to believe that 90 per cent of kids are having breakfast and lunch, but when you take the blinders off you realize a high percentage of them are not. For more information about SHSs entry into the competition, and to vote, visit http://www.avivacommunityfund. org/ideas/acf17039.

Division 2 cadidates take part in election forum

Continued from Page 1 When and where council meetings were held was discussed, with suggestions of holding evening meetings, and council travelling to alternate towns and hamlets. Improved communication was said to be needed and could be improved by establishing community boards, round table discussions by community leaders, improving current technology and the county website, posting notices and holding more open houses to inform the public on county issues. Better signs on the highway were discussed and residents want them updated. Fire ban signs were also wanted throughout the county. The closing of the Gleichen school was a deep concern. One measure was for county councillors to vote down the Eastland School development permit. All the candidates agreed busing elementary students was bad for the children and the community, and they said they had grave concerns about the safety of children at a school built between two secondary highways. All candidates agreed that a local school was an economic draw and a centre of the community. Candidates were divided on the water issues, with some supporting piped in water and others wanting an updated Gleichen plant, filtration and better treatment or topping up the Glechen reservoir when levels were low. There was also a mention of concerns over safe drinking water, of water rights and how the water grants were used. Panhandling and alcohol abuse in Gleichen and Cluny downtown cores was discussed. It was suggested a co-ordinated effort be implemented by the hamlets, the RCMP and the Siksika council to help solve the addiction problems of those creating disturbances, with a possibility of developing a co-operative AADAC program. Changing the hours liquor could be purchased was mentioned as a deterrent. There was open discussion with the public after the audience question period, and all candidates welcomed residents to contact them to discuss their platform. Election stations will be set up in Gleichen and the county office on Oct. 21, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Meeting with the Minister

The Minister of Infrastructure Wayne Drysdale was in Strathmore on Oct. 10 for a lunch discussion to talk about whats happening in Strathmore and to hear about any issues or concerns in the town. Grajczyk said he spoke about seeing more lights on the highway, for now that was only a discussion, nothing has been determined there. Grajczyk also told the minister he is gravely concerned about the empty wing at the hospital. The Golden Rule to success

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Many inspirational speakers have encouraged teens to work toward their dreams, but Ian Hill is one who has overcome many of the same obstacles that teens struggle with in daily life. In his address to the Strathmore High School (SHS) leadership class on Oct. 8, Hill characterized himself as just a regular guy, but one who learned to overcome challenges and find keys to reaching goals. When I was your age I couldnt read. When I was your age I was sitting in his (vice principals) office. I was in a bunch of different homes and ate out of a garbage can, said Hill. I wouldnt be in a leadership class, I would be outside. So I always wondered, when they made me sit down and listen to some guy that came from outside, whats this guys story, whats his program, whats his deal? I want to show you how to get from nowhere, to somewhere. Hill is president of the board of directors and volunteer CEO with Let Them Be Kids, an all volunteer, non-profit, community based organization that acts as a catalyst for the building of playgrounds, skate parks and fitness parks across Canada and beyond. Since 2008, Let Them Be Kids has supported over 160 projects across Canada. In his presentation at SHS, Hill said he wants students to identify where they are today, and identify their dream for the future. In the gap between, he said, lay the challenges to overcome. You cant go on a journey until you think of what that journey may hold for you. Hill outlined some of the challenges students today face, including negative attitudes and fears. Societal or cultural structures, past failures, and fears of being laughed at or criticized can also become impediments, and Hill said people become so protective against them that they no longer reach for their dreams. My history is not my destiny, said Hill, about his own lessons learned. He suggests accepting limitations and dismissing worries over things that cant be controlled. He said people have a choice on how they think. By finding alternative paths and using positive thinking, space opens to new forward paths. Finally, he said the key to bridge challenges is belief in ones self. It sounds simplistic, but it is not, said Hill. We all have the capacity to see life getting better than it was the day before. Hill illustrated his point by saying that out of 70 billion people who have lived on Earth, no one has the same DNA or fingerprint, a fact that makes each individual priceless and unique. Each person offers something no one else can offer, leaving a special imprint on the world. If we believe that we

are special and treat ourselves as special, Hill said others will believe it as well. Hills formula for success is to combine belief, optimism and respect, with energy and commitment. He compared each second of the day to a $1 coin. Each day, there is $86,000 to invest. He asked students if they would spend it lying on the couch playing video games, or would they put it towards action plans to their dreams and goals? Hill said the philosophy has worked in his own life -- he currently directs multi-million dollar companies and devotes his life to improving the planet, through public speaking and volunteer efforts. Hill said he has no doubt that when a person shares their support and talent with others, not expecting any reciprocal payment, benefits abound. It opens doors when one least expects them to open. He encouraged the students to reach out to others if they were struggling. Today I am fortunate; I have more than I could ever hope to have, primarily because of adults like those people (teachers) right there. Some teacher, some coach, some principal believed in me and saw the potential in my life, said Hill. These people are here because they love you and want to see you do something great with your life. The day things turned around in my life was when I realized their role was to help make things better. Hill supports the Becoming a Community Leader courses offered free through Bow Valley College, and he encouraged students to sign up if they were ready to be leaders. Becoming a Community Leader is a 15 week online program for students and adults alike that can be done at ones own pace. It begins on Oct. 18. For more information or to register, contact Teri K. McKinnon, education representative with Bow Valley College, Strathmore campus, at 403-462-2550.

Sometimes making one small change in a dietary habit can make a big difference in your weight. It is estimated that drinking one can of a sugar-containing soft drink per day can put on about 14 pounds (6.75 kg) in a year. This is a good place to start. Add in a brisk walk every day. That will help also. Doctors put many of their heart patients on a baby A.S.A. daily. The term baby seems to indicate that its a small dose and cant cause any problems. However, even at that low dose, it can cause an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Call your doctor if you notice any of the following: bright red blood in vomit; vomit that looks like coffee grounds, black stools or blood in stools. The limits for alcohol intake is lower for women than men for three main reasons. Women have less water in their bodies to help dilute the alcohol in the blood. Their bodies have a higher fat content thus alcohol is absorbed more slowly. Women have lower levels of an enzyme needed to metabolize alcohol. The most common sexually transmitted disease in Canada is HPV (Human Papillomavirus). Approximately 3 out of 4 sexually active Canadians will be infected with HPV at some time in their lives. HPV is associated with cervical cancer. There is a vaccine available for males and females aged 9 and up. It is a very effective vaccine. Look into protecting your children. We have all the information about the vaccines available to prevent HPV. Wed be happy to talk to you about it.

The Strathmore Assembly of Youth (SAY) held a mayoral forum at Strathmore High School on Oct. 9. Both current Mayor Steve Grajczyk and mayoral hopeful Michael Ell had a chance to answer questions for the students. Shannon LeClair Photos

SAY hosts mayoral forum

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The Strathmore Assembly for Youth (SAY) held a mayoral forum for candidates Steve Grajczyk and Michael Ell on Oct. 9. The forum, moderated by Sarah McKinnon and Erik Schiiler, was intended to allow a chance for SAY members to find out more about the mayoral candidates. Ell explained to the audience that he spent years in the corporate sector in the financial, business, and personal income tax and property tax fields. He said he also worked as a salesman, and had been involved in advertising. Ell said he has lived in Strathmore for 35 years and wants to repay the community for all it has done for him and his family. With these kinds of experiences that Ive had, I feel that they are going to benefit me as your mayor, said Ell. Grajczyk has also lived in Strathmore for 35 years as a businessman. I have done a lot of things in the community, and Strathmore has done a lot for me, he said. It is my turn to give back by putting myself in local politics. Grajczyk said he feels the best way to give back is by getting into local politics and making the community a better place. He said his experience as general manager with the Strathmore & District Agricultural Society for four years, serving as a town councillor 35 years ago and again these past three years as mayor, and his time as a small business owner, has taught him economics and how to save money. He said he has travelled the world making connections, and has been learning what works in other communities so that he can find ways to make Strathmore a better place to live. Thats my goal -- to make the community a better place to live for all of you. I want people to grow up in a community thats safe for the future, said Grajczyk. The candidates were asked, Could you share with us what you tell others when you are talking about Strathmore? Ell spoke of his wife, who is originally from Calgary, and how she was wary about moving to Strathmore. Today, he said, she would never move back because she loves it here. He said Strathmore is a warm community that offers the amenities that young people and seniors need. For his part, Grajczyk said he tells people about how Strathmore is a little community near Calgary, that it is a safe, warm place to grow up in and that there are many amenities. Were a small town with big city amenities here. We have the hospital, we have the swimming pool, we have good parks, we have playgrounds, we have walkways and, thanks to the SAY students, we have a path system that is really useful now, said Grajczyk. We have all the things of a big city with a small town attitude, and that is a big plus to everybody. The moderators asked the candidates to list their four-year and 10-year goals for the town. Ell said that in the next four years, town finances need to get under control. He said in the last three years, town debt has increased by $7 million, which is costing $2 million a year to repay. He said once that is under control, funds could then be used to provide different services and amenities needed in the town. He cited downtown revitalization, which he said will help with the tax base and will improve the financial situation. Ell also said he hopes that in 10 years, the need to keep the farm land will be realized. We have to come up with a solution in regards to doing multi-family and multi-story buildings to keep us from using prime farm land. I hope that within 10 years that we start to get to that (mindset) so that we can do that, said Ell. Grajczyk said his constant goal is working on getting the industrial park developed. Without an industrial park, we will not be able to alleviate or keep our taxes at a reasonable level. Those things are big to us, we must encourage it. Grajczyk explained the deficit, which he said is not caused by any council or any council member on board right now. Rather, he said the deficit stems from the sewage treatment plant and the water line from Calgary. In order to entice people from Calgary you must have these amenities and ones that work with efficiency, said Grajczyk. In the last three years the town also had to build the reservoir to be up to code when it came to a safe level of potable water storage in the case of a break in the water line. Candidates were asked to identify a challenge that Strathmore is currently facing and to explain how they would like to see it solved. One of the biggest challenges we face is the hospital -- we must keep the hospital open, that is critical to all of us and to the future of Strathmore, said Grajczyk. With the extended care wing closed, he added it is important to make sure that part of the hospital is being used is some way. He said there has been discussion with the Alberta Health Minister to find out what the plan is for the empty wing. Ell agreed about the importance of the hospital. He also said the town needs to address the revitalization of the downtown core. When we have people come in to Strathmore and they see all of the empty buildings down there, they wonder why there isnt a real opportunity for them, he noted. I believe if we can use some incentives with our business people downtown, we can encourage them to refurbish the outsides of their buildings and maybe the insides, said Ell.

Who to choose
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor In a race where there are many candidates, all with seemingly similar platforms, its often difficult for people to choose who to vote for. A Princeton University study on electoral behaviour summarized the many ways voters make their choices. One way was to choose the person that is the most familiar to the voter. Mayoral candidate Steve Grajczyk is certainly hoping that voter familiarity will encourage people to vote for him come election day. Most of you know me. I am a good guy and know what I have done for this town, he said at the Oct. 9 candidate forum held at the Strathmore Civic Centre. The study listed some of the other ways voters choose candidates: Through an immediate emotional stimulus or first impressions A candidates past performance Personal characteristics Targeting a specific issue and identifying with the candidate that represents it well Choosing the candidate that represents a particular party stance (E.g. Liberal, Conservative, etc.) Choosing someone who shows leadership for a specific group of individuals

Going with the candidate who fits societal norms that the individual or community expect At the Oct. 9 forum, all candidates presented their platform and each had one or more of the aspects above included in their introductory speech; or it was delivered when they answered questions put to them from the audience. Many appealed to norms of family life and values, or community spirit. They designated their commitment to the community through work, or leadership in community associations or groups. Many of the answers were similar to the Oct. 3 forum, but some of the candidates adapted their campaign to more fully address issues brought up previously by the other candidates. The issues presented included improved residential, commercial, industrial and economic development; town debt and fiscal responsibility; water rates and utilities; recreational facilities; health care; seniors and youth services; and forming partnerships with service groups and other communities. So by delving further into internet, voters can use some tools to narrow down the candidate playing field. A student teaching tool called Think, Choose, Vote utilized in the British Columbia education system has students chart issues they think are important, evaluate what they know about the issues and do some further research on them. They also document what they know about the candidates. Then they chart the candidates platform and issue stance identifying them as factual, opinion based, or on based other criteria. For those with a mathematical genius, there are also complicated mathematical formulas that can predict the probable winners of an election, but you must still do the math.

Many political parties and media outlets use polls to determine the most favourable candidates and some voters just go with the popular choice. There is the argument that polls can be skewed in the favour of one candidate or another depending on the bias of the pollster, but dont think the election is all but won, as often the undecided vote swings the majority in a whole different direction from the previous polls, leading to an unexpected winner. There is a computer tool called Vote Compass that was used in the Alberta 2012 provincial election, where voters answered questions on various issues and the computer compared those answers to the running candidate information. It quickly spit out the name of the candidate that most resembled the users profile. It was also available to voters by the CBC media website in the 2011 federal election. Vote Compass attracted nearly two million users over the five-week campaign. The answers also generated graphs of Canadian attitudes on certain issues. For results see: www.votecompass.com/results Unfortunately, there is no Vote Compass for local municipal elections. So whats left is going out to the forums, reading candidate pamphlets, calling or meeting with the candidate, talking with members of the associations they put up as references, reading their responses in the local media. It seems like a lot of work; but given that councillors and mayors are spending voters hard earned money for four years, and making decisions about increased taxation, it might be worth the time investment. With a little research and introspection, most voters should be able to pick out someone they think will be a great and mark a ballot when they enter the voting booth on Oct. 21.

Jack de Keyzer returns to Strathmore

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Blues musician Jack de Keyzer is returning to Strathmore on Oct. 26. de Keyzer is a two time Juno awards winner, and a seven times Maple Blues award winner. His last trip to Strathmore was in 2011. Everybody enjoyed him so much that we just thought that we would really like to hear his music again, said Linda Storkson, president of the Strathmore Musical Arts Society. Hes a real crowd pleaser. You cant sit still to his music, you need to dance, and he is an excellent, excellent guitarist. I am really looking forward to coming back to Strathmore. This is my third year performing for the Strathmore Musical Arts Society, said de Keyzer. Its fantastic to see the blues gaining popularity everywhere I go. de Keyzer compares his style of blues to that of BB King and Stevie Ray Vaughn. He likes to add a little Rock N Roll and R&B into his sound, which he said everyone seems to get into. The Strathmore crowd are a really fun group to play for and great people, said de Keyzer. Since his last trip to Strathmore he has been performing across the country. He has played at the Arctic Circle for the Canadian Forces, the Montreal Jazz Festival and Jamaica. de Keyzer has a new CD out this year called Electric Love. It was nominated for a Juno award this year for the Bets Blues album. Its my most Rock/Blues album to date. Im really happy with the way it turned out. I listened to a lot of my early guitar heroes, Clapton and Hendrix and Page to inspire me to write done rocking blues songs, said de Keyzer. Tickets to the show are $50 and include dinner. They are available at PJs appliances, Assist Business Centre and Pro Water Centre. Cocktails are at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 2 at the Travelodge ballroom, and the show will begin at 8 p.m.

Thought for the Week ~

Letters to the editor

Community builders
To the Editor Wheatland County and Strathmore have been advertising an online leadership course called Community Builders. It is being brought to us through efforts of many local community builders, particularly sponsors Agrium, UFA, Byron Smith Ford, Rocking Horse Energy Services, Encana, ATB Financial, Primary Care Network, Marigold Library System, Dona and Grant Klaiber and Bow Valley College. Bow Valley College hosted a meeting to give further information on this course on Oct. 8. After hearing what Mr. Hill had to say about the uses for this free course, I feel compelled to try to get as many people to participate as possible. Businesses, councils, organizations, current volunteers, parents whos children are small but will one day be involved with organizations, high school students and everyone who would like to see how our leadership roles are evolving and changing and how to be a leader are encouraged to attend. I am encouraging you to participate. The course can be accessed on your time schedule. You must register before Oct. 18. It is an approach to leadership that is aimed at working together well ... as community builders! Visit www.becomingacommunitybuilder.com or contact Teri McKinnon at (403) 462-2550. As a pilot program it would be great to see our county shine as embracing this venture. Cheryl Marshman Rockyford

Choosing our next leaders

To the Editor Although Strathmores next council will be determined by local residents, many individuals own or work in businesses there. Residents of the surrounding communities are also stakeholders in Strathmore. Interest in the upcoming elections is not restricted to the community where we reside as many people now live in one place and work in another. Decisions on Oct. 21 will impact lives both personally and professionally, so it is valuable to know what is taking place. I participate in the democratic process by asking questions and listening to debate. Fundamental to that process is the idea that within the public lays the true power and future of society; therefore, whatever trust the public places in its officials must be respected by them. Through my attendance at the candidate forums, I discovered there are several smart and articulate individuals who have chosen to run in Strathmore and Wheatland County and they should all be applauded for their willingness to take on this challenging, public role. The wonderful thing about democracy is that when strong challengers emerge, they engage voters attention igniting an incumbents willingness to be accountable as other choices become visible. Many candidates are speaking about transparency and as constituents we will need to keep that fire burning. A government is transparent when the great majority of the information that it holds about its activities, policies, etc., is available to the public. Also, it appears that an interesting trend currently taking place in Calgary seems to have moved to Strathmore. I understand that incumbents have endorsed each other thereby indicating they believe they best serve the town as a slate a group of like minded candidates joined together to attain or retain political power. Whether or not hiring an economic development officer serves Strathmores current needs, I do not understand where the very high salary estimates are obtained. A quick search of Economic Developers Alberta website and a Government of Albertas site brought me to the Millier Dickison Blais 2010 National Salary Survey for the Economic Developers Association of Canada. In that study, they report the average minimum salary for an economic development officer at $52,200 and the average maximum salary at $66,828. This is significantly different than the over $100,000 salary that has been mentioned and comparable to the cost of the paving of the parking lot at the Civic Centre. How does a healthy dialogue occur without questioning or challenging information and commitments set before those responsible for said decisions? Without this type of dialogue are a communitys best interests being served? I know that lively conversations occur at county meetings sometimes resulting in it taking a while to achieve consensus. Any councils effectiveness depends on elected officials attending meetings with a willingness to hear and consider all information and providing input on their areas while thinking and voting for the whole municipality. Believing that the future of our municipalities truly resides with the public, I challenge and encourage you to learn about your candidates. Talk with them, ask questions as this is a vital part of the voting process and share your concerns. Then be sure to vote on Oct. 21. (The views and opinions expressed are my own. These views and opinions do not represent any of the organizations that I am associated with.) Respectfully submitted, Marcy Field Mountain Lion Leadership

Theatre players calls for actors

Wendi Tashlikowich Times Contributor Strathmore Theatre Players is looking for comedic actors and behind the scenes people to help make this years production of Lend Me A Tenor a success. The play is a comedy farce of mistaken identity, set in the 1930s. There are four male roles and three female roles available. Auditions will be held in the Aztec rehearsal space on Oct. 22-23. The actors will be required to do a cold read from the script. Strathmore Theatre Players have been in existence since the 1960s, although it has gone through many changes. Most recently, they have become members of the Strathmore Arts Society. Co-chairs Angela Reeves and Tashina Hanrath said they would love to see a Centre for the Arts built in Strathmore, a place that they could call home. The theatre group meets on a regular basis in their current rehearsal space in the Aztec building to do play readings. The group goes over scripts together and decides what they might be interested in bringing to the stage. They have a few plays picked out they are hoping to perform at the Regional One Act Play Festival this coming year. The group said they would also like to bring back Shakespeare in the Park in the near future. Lend Me A Tenor will run March 5-15, 2014.

Masons on the move

Geoff Scott Sec-Treas., Masonic Lodge #53 After three years in Irricana, Strathmore Masonic Lodge is working its way back to the local area. October saw its first meeting in Namaka Community Hall, and although the building does not have the trappings of a lodge, it serves as an acceptable substitute. Its proximity will enable more members to attend. Centennial plans to dedicate a new lodge in Strathmore were derailed by the financial woes of 2008, so members have had to make do. Officers continue to wait for the opportunity to collaborate in the development of a suitable space within the town. The first meeting had an initiation of a new candidate and the confirmation of another three. Of interest to high school students was a rousing appeal for contributions to the Masonic Higher Education Bursary Fund. Second only to the governments Rutherford Scholarship program, the Fund provides one hundred bursaries of $2,000 for any post-secondary course, and one of $7,000 for a pharmacy/medical student. It is called a bursary because it places financial need above academic achievement. Gratefully received and faithfully applied moneys come from member contributions, special events and member memorials, and are free of administrative charges. Strathmore was this years winner of the Dinosaur District Bursary Challenge, indicating the importance Strathmore Masons place on helping someone to build a better future. Information and application forms can be found at www.mhebf.com. Deadline is Feb. 1.

Times correction
In last weeks article McGiver Delays Decision it was stated that the Wheatland Regional Water Plan would need about $2.5 million for the Standard water treatment plant. This is incorrect. The upgrade estimates from previous studies were $4.2M for upgrading Gleichen (2012 estimate) and $2.8M to upgrade Rockyford (2010 estimate). Standards plant does not need upgrading in the immediate future. Please accept our apologies for the error and any worry or inconvenience it may have caused.

The Long-Gun Registry has been destroyed really!

Kevin Sorenson, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report Many constituents have contacted my office following reports of the RCMPs confiscation of firearms during the High River flood. This matter has been taken very seriously by myself and my Alberta Caucus colleagues, including our Prime Minister. If there was any impropriety by the RCMP in High River, this will come to light in the investigation being performed by the on-going Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP. We are awaiting the results of that inquiry. The RCMP Complaints Commission is an independent agency created by Parliament to be responsible for ensuring that complaints made about the conduct of RCMP members are examined thoroughly, fairly and impartially. The Commission is not part of the RCMP. We all accept that whenever a local state of emergency is declared, police have authority to take extraordinary measures such as entering homes to ensure they are secure, or to see if someone needs to be evacuated. The RCMP claims that as part of search and rescue efforts, when they came across unsecured firearms in plain view, they stored them for future return to the lawful owners. Many constituents were concerned that homes with firearms were identified through the use of the now-defunct long-gun registry and targeted by the RCMP. As your Member of Parliament, I took this matter very seriously. Throughout my tenure as your democratically elected federal representative, our opposition to the Liberals long-gun registry was consistently the number-one political issue, until our Conservative government scrapped the registry in 2011. Following the events at High River, I contacted the RCMP in Ottawa and locally, regarding our concerns. I have asked repeatedly if the RCMP has access to the old long-gun registry. I have repeatedly been told no. I have pressed further by asking whether there was an old listing or other surviving registry data, or any other way that the long-gun registry can be used and I have been repeatedly told, absolutely not. Most recently, our new Minister of Public Safety, the Hon. Steven Blaney has responded to me by providing information from the report of the audit of the destruction of the long-gun registry nationwide that was completed in December of 2012. An oversight committee, including third party members, provided ongoing advice and guidance throughout the process of destroying the longgun registry data. This committee: observed onsite the destruction of electronic records in the Canadian Firearms Information System (CFIS); created and ran queries to determine if electronic records identified as being related to the registration of non-restricted firearms still existed in the CFIS; analyzed with computer-assisted audit tools to determine if any electronic records were erroneously omitted from destruction; and obtained confirmation from the Director General, Canadian Firearms Program and the RCMPs Chief Information Officer that the electronic records identified as being related to the registration of non-restricted firearms in CFIS were destroyed. The RCMP reports that they are in contact with affected parties in High River to ensure the safe return of all firearms to their lawful owners, a process that is underway. I am confident to report to my constituents that based on my own investigation, I can conclude that that the Liberals wasteful, ineffective and costly Long-Gun Registry has been destroyed! Meet the candidates

This week our question for all of the candidates was: Why should voters put an X beside your name on Election Day?

Town of Strathmore
levels of government, citizens, and, private industry to enhance our quality of life. I want a safe, well-connected town that fosters community gatherings where we work together for the greater good. I believe that residents desire and deserve the best level of service from their local government. I will work with my fellow councillors to ensure this happens. On Oct. 21, consider a candidate with a vision who has the skills and desire to make it a reality. That candidate is Doug Clarke. www.Facebook.com/ElectDougC Retraction from last weeks paper: It was noted in the coverage of the candidates forum on Oct. 3rd that I supported graduated scales of taxation for different businesses. This is incorrect, I stated my support of municipal tax incentives for businesses to improve their buildings and landscaping. There would need to be maximum value and term limits associated with these incentives. I support business owners deciding the best way to improve their operations.

Bob Sobol
I treat an election campaign as if it were a job interview which I guess it is! As a potential hirer, I would first present you with my resume. Briefly, I have been married (to Gina) for 37 years. I have three adult children, and two grandchildren. I retired from the RCMP in 2003 as a Sgt., after serving for 30 years. I moved to Strathmore at that time and opened a coffee shop (The Boulevard Caf). I sold the Caf in 2005 and began doing some

Doug Clarke
You should mark X by my name on Election Day because I have the education, experience, and passion to help make Strathmore a great place to live, work, and play. We all know what Strathmore is like today; I have a vision of Strathmore four to 10 years from now that I would like to share with you. My vision for Strathmore is a home for healthy active people of all ages. I will work to provide well-planned development that offers housing choices for individuals and families in various life stages. I want a thriving downtown that attracts residents and visitors to shop, mingle, and maybe even stay. Residents deserve a municipal government that works with other

private contract work for the RCMP in the recruiting area. I continue to work part-time in that regard. In regards to my work ethic in the six years that I have been on council, I have been a member of a number of committees attending most meetings and actually getting involved with the groups. In council meetings, I am unafraid to challenge or debate and regularly research the topics before us to be prepared. In the last three years, I have initiated numerous projects and motions, which I feel have benefited the citizens of Strathmore. I am experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about this job, and vow to continue speaking and acting on behalf of Strathmore. Please vote on Oct. 21!

Rocky Blokland
Hello Everyone! We are in the final week of this election campaign. You, the citizens of Strathmore, have by now heard, seen, or read what all the candidates have been putting forward. As a sitting councillor, I am somewhat impressed by what some of the candidates are saying. It makes for great coffee shop conversations. However, just to set the record straight on some of these comments The Town of Strathmore audited financial statements, and will verify these numbers on the difference on borrowing money in longterm debt limit; from 2010-2012 net debt has increased by $2,435,537 not $7 million as mentioned. The Town of Strathmore is not paying $2 million a year in interest. Rather, we are paying approximately $2 million a year in principle and interest. Again, these numbers are in the Town of Strathmore audited financial statements.

Brad Walls
The voters of Strathmore have a difficult choice coming up. Who is the best candidate to represent them on Strathmore Town Council? I want to assure you that I am, as I will present your views. I was previously on council for three years, giving me a better knowledge of policy and procedures. I have a young mind and a lot of energy to dig out essential information and find new solutions to the towns

problem issues. I will devote full-time attention to my duties. Problems and issues affect me, like they affect you, because I live in the community, do business here, and recreate with my family here. I know by raising a young family, the money in my pocket doesnt go far and it is the same for my friends and neighbours. I will vote to make sure necessary expenditures are approved and be a watchdog against unnecessary ones. The children, youth, young professionals, single parents, married couples with families, and senior citizens deserve a councillor who cares what bylaws and programs are put in place. I care, and I am here for you today, and will work for your tomorrow. With me, your opinion always matters. Please vote for your neighbour, Brad Walls, on Oct. 21. Thank you!

I will say it again; this council has been very frugal, fiscally, and financially responsible. Our decisions are made after considerable debate, and our track record for the previous three years speaks for itself. Our track record includes projects like Thomas Drive, Ridge Road, The Water Reservoir, pathways and Kinsman Park land purchase, and a list of smaller projects undertaken, while at the same time lowering the debt percentage. I, as a councillor, would like to see this continue in a responsible manner. By re-electing me to the next council, you have my under lying promise that I will fulfill those responsibilities. As our director of corporate and financial services quoted, this council is very careful and responsible in the way it approves the expenditure of money. I am asking you, the citizens of Strathmore, if you want continued financial responsibility for the next four years, please vote for Rocky Blokland Oct. 21. Contact me at 403-3241849. Also look on the towns website to see councils personal expenditures as proof of being fiscally responsible. Thank you.

Denise Peterson
In asking for your vote on Oct. 21st, I promise in return to remain accessible. In my work as a teacher and principal, I was honoured to be a public servant, and if elected to represent you, I will strive to uphold a servant leadership approach in all my obligations. In my previous responsibilities as trustee of a pension and health services board, as principal and teacher, and as an appointed board member to Childrens Services, I remained acutely

aware of my fiscal responsibility. Having been a single parent on a limited income, I understand the ramifications of increasing public costs. While a small incremental assessment might seem insignificant to some, for the sector of community living on a fixed income, it can be extremely difficult. I will bring to council the capacity to hear the will of community, and through that understanding, formulate goals, set direction, and work diligently to accomplish desired outcomes. I am committed to working collaboratively with council in the interest of building a vibrant affordable community that includes a community volunteer corps, seniors council, a community partnership template, and a local communication plan. If you need transportation to the polling station please call ahead, to 403-934-3635.

Dave Hamilton
The electorate of Strathmore should vote for me due to my past experience on council, as well as my knowledge of new and ongoing projects for the future that will benefit the town. On a personal note: I am honest, of high integrity, open and approachable. I have a common-sense-approach dealing with issues that are presented in council. I will represent both seniors and youth, ensuring that their interests and future needs are met. I will ensure that the former extended care wing of the hospital remain viable by ensuring this area is used for a diagnostic center, extended laboratory facilities, and a larger emergency ward. I will continue to improve the Towns infrastructure by upgrading roads as well as other areas of con-

Robert Antonisse
First, I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone for your consideration of voting to elect me for Town Council. Some of the issues I would like to tackle if I am elected are: -Creating a pathway along George Freeman Trail to North Boundary Road to Wheatland Trail -Work with our youth groups and schools to identify and address any recreational needs our teens have -Start the groundwork for a Strathmore bus

transit system -Solve our current deficits regarding our Civic Centre, Family Centre and Aquatic Centre -Work with our current business owners, potential new business owners and building owners in the downtown core to gain support and enthusiastic support of the revitalization process -Remain as open and accessible to the public to ensure everyone can be heard Why should voters put an X beside my name on Election Day? I am a positive hard working person that loves people. I am very easy to communicate with and I am a great listener. I will give everyone the chance to talk to me and be heard. If I am elected, I will do whatever it takes to be successful. Thank you again.

cern. I will endeavour to keep our taxes at the current level, or lower them through development of our commercial land, as well as other land south of the Trans Canada Highway. I will work with other organizations, businesses, and governments to secure a new recreational facility that can be part of a new school. I will continue to create new parks and pathways in town, as well as downtown beautification and revitalization. I will maintain the high quality of law enforcement provided by our local detachment of the RCMP, as well as the Towns own Peace Officers and Bylaw Officers. In summation, due to my personal attributes and my commitment to seeing Strathmore grow in a steady and progressive manner, I am asking you for your support in these efforts by voting for me on Election Day. With your help, I can continue to work for you on your council for the next term of office. In closing, I wish to thank all concerned for allowing me to represent you on your council for the last three years. Thank you.

Telisa Tebbutt
Throughout this election campaign, I have had the opportunity to connect with many citizens of Strathmore, whether through the several forums, the pieces submitted to our two local publications, or the many homes I have visited. This has been a fun and reward-

ing experience that has taught me a great deal about this town and its people, as well as about myself. I want to thank everyone whom I have had the chance to meet with for giving me their time and words of encouragement. To those reading this now whom I have not had the chance to connect with personally, I ask you to visit my Facebook page by searching Elect Telisa Tebbutt As Town Councillor, or by reading some of my answers to the questions posed in previous weeks, to see where I stand on issues facing this town in the near future. If you like what I have had to say, please show your support by voting for me on Oct. 21.

Meet the candidates - Election 2013

Long-range planning is very important in shaping the future of any community. I, and other members of council, had the foresight to lay the framework by ensuring we had a good source of water, and the new waste water treatment plant for our effluent also in place. With the annexation of additional lands, not only for residential, but for commercial and industrial purposes, everything is in place for the new council to aggressively promote Strathmore globally. Our long-term care wing at the hospital has to remain open and upgraded for other uses such as diagnostic imaging, enhanced lab services, and the expansion of our overcrowded emergency room. With your support, I will help the new council reshape Strathmore and make it a community on Canadas Main Street, where all visitors will feel welcome. I am committed to Strathmores Future Growth And Prosperity. I ask for your vote on Oct. 21 because I will make a difference! I am the person with the taxpayer in mind. As candidates we can come before you and tell what we would like to do when we are elected, but it actually takes everyone working together to reach a common goal. That common goal should be the betterment of Strathmore and to protect the way of life we enjoy. Having said that, I ask that on Oct. 21, you let me be your voice on council by voting for me. By the way folks, I have been talking to people and there seems to be some confusion over the election process. Just because there are six positions on council to fill, do not feel obligated to vote for six candidates. You may not feel comfortable voting for some of the candidates running for council, so if you only want to vote for two or three of them, then that is youre right to do so. Thank you.

John Rempel
I believe the candidates should be able to demonstrate solid leadership with a clear vision for the future of Strathmore. Members of council have to make decisions that are in the best interest of the entire community. They must be committed, and accountable to the taxpayers. I believe that I represent the citizens of Strathmore with those qualities. The priorities of the community have to be considered in all budgetary discussions, and dealt with in a timely manner. Presently, we are burdened with very high water and sewer rates. Residential irrigation and second water meters for outdoor watering in areas that dont have residential irrigation, has to be considered.

Allan Auger
Strathmore is by no means the small town it was 30 years ago and it is on the verge of expanding again not only in the residential districts but in the commercial industrial parts of town as well. I believe that a good balance in both sectors would help keep future tax hikes to a minimum. A strong commercial tax base would make for a better standard of living for everyone in Strathmore.

Mark Giesbrecht
Why should voters put an X beside Mark Giesbrecht on election night? There are several things to consider when deciding which candidate to vote for, such as: Is this person trustworthy? Is this person a leader? Do they have the ability to listen? Are they able to communicate well? These are all qualities necessary to be an effective town councillor. I believe that the people who know me would agree that personal honesty and integrity are very important to me. I have lived in the Strathmore community for 45 years and chances are that if you dont already know me, someone you know does. I have strong leadership skills, which were necessary to start and to grow a successful small business from the ground up in Strathmore. I have also served on several boards in

positions of leadership, and those positions have helped me to grow more confident in my ability to effectively lead. I am a good listener and am very interested in how the residents of this community feel about Strathmore. As part of my campaign for this election, I have spent many hours knocking on doors to introduce myself, and to get input from the citizens of this great town. I have learned many things during this process and I hope to address many of the issues that were discussed with me. I am a good communicator. My work requires that I spend a great deal of time every day communicating and negotiating with my clients, vendors, and staff. I believe this skill set will be very valuable if I am elected to town council. I feel strongly that I will be able to work in conjunction with my colleagues to push forward on economic development, and hopefully bring more quality employment opportunities to Strathmore. In summary, I believe that I do have the qualities to be an effective town councillor and if you agree, I hope that you will support me in being elected to town council.

Mike Ell
I am excited about contributing to positive change for our community. This is my platform for change. A Stronger Economic Focus my experience in business and vision of a better Strathmore tells me that we need a stronger and more prioritized local economic development plan to enhance the future growth of our great town to meet the needs of current and future residents. Fiscal Transparency and Integrity - as Mayor, III have your back on the bottom line. Your vote means youll have entrusted me to

spend your tax dollars wisely. I will disclose my monthly expenses to you. I heard your concerns during the election campaign; I will work to include them in the budget process. You deserve a transparent and accountable local government working for you. Leadership- you deserve a voice that demonstrates inclusiveness with a clear path for creating a sustainable future for families and seniors. Together, I will work with residents, volunteer organizations, town council, business leaders, and government to create a stronger and more vibrant Strathmore in which to live and work. We have a considerable number of challenges and opportunities ahead of us. Collectively, lets work to make Strathmore a better place to call home. Your vote is your voice to making positive change. Working for Strathmore!

Steve Grajczyk
I have lived in the community, owned and operated two successful businesses, as well as sold commercial/investment real estate for 35 years. This has given me tremendous insight into fiscal responsibility. This has also given me the knowledge, pulse, and feel for the community and has helped in knowing the communitys wants, needs, and desires. I ask you to appreciate and understand the knowledge I have gained in the past years serving and working in our community. My experience in owing small businesses and being on many boards and committees, including being general manager with the agriculture society, traveling Alberta and talking with other mayors and administers, and the

John M Whieldon
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow citizens of Strathmore for their patience throughout this election process that some might say, was an ordeal. I, too, hope for better representation from our council and administration. As most of you are aware, I have been outspoken over the past few years in our local newspapers, and at council meetings, asking valid questions of our governance. Important questions

that many of us ask, never seem to receive a qualifying response. If I am fortunate enough to receive your trust, and I am elected as a New Strathmore Town Councillor, I pledge to work with the other members of council, as long as they are working for you. There are many situations that a councillor is required to vote on, and on the most important issues the vote is required to be unanimous. When a vote is required on a motion of ridiculous spending or giving away town-owned land, I will vote no, and shut down that process. I believe that there needs to be a complete audit for all Municipal Departments to end department overlap, financial waste, and unnecessary budgets. I will hold them accountable. Thank you for your support. We are all in this together! www.johnmwhieldon.com

good rapport I have with government officials, will greatly serve you and the rest of our community for the next four years. Please dont throw this vast amount of knowledge I have gained away and keep continuity. Below outlines some of my attributes: -Honesty and integrity -Open-minded -Experienced -Open door policy -Marketing ability; know how to sell the town (real-estate experience) -Working with developers as they develop property that creates our future tax base -Always try and analyze and listen from the citizens point of view -Great respect for councils and administrations opinions -Knowledge in all aspects in running the tow -Continuity; I can step right into the issues at hand, which saves time and money I ask for your VOTE on Oct. 21.

Village of Rockyford
You should vote for me because I stand for integrity, honesty and transparency. A new council should ensure everyone in our community has a voice that is listened to and is treated fairly. You should and have all the facts about town expenses; where is your money going? sponsible for managing taxpayers money. The village council should spend your money for the benefit, welfare, and interest of all residents and businesses. Like many other places, we have seen our taxes and fees increase. I believe this trend has to stop. It is a problem for all residents and particularly for those many on fixed incomes. Your money should be spent only on essential services that provide for a safe and viable community. We retired to a beautiful quiet community and intend to stay here. I will participate actively on council. Councillors are not followers. It will be a goal of mine to find ways to inform residents of issues facing the community and promote their participation.

Pat Fule
I hope voters will trust me again in 2013. I pushed to drop council per diems. I helped cut the number of councillors going to the Federal Conferences. I keep our two annual budget weekends in Strathmore, instead of other cities. With my Facebook page, I have communicated, kept residents informed, and listened to ideas. In fact, a paved pathway and two three-way stops, came directly from citizens. Three of my committees have flourished, and Id like to continue. The library board is working toward expansion or relocation. The

Youth Club is now a town department, and we are financially solid. Lastly, the Wheatland Housing Authority comprised of county and town councillors, has finished renovations on the Wheatland Seniors Lodge, and we have paid off the buildings mortgage! Our town council got a new reservoir (which provides more days of emergency water), and two major roads paved. If re-elected, I will work toward practical residential choices to increase our downtown population for revitalization. I will work toward attracting more residents to Strathmore, and finding an equitable solution to the sewer portion of the utility bill. Finally, we need to find an acceptable agreement so we can develop the south commercial lands. For 30 teaching years youve trusted me with your children and grandchildren, please trust me again.

Voters should put an X beside my name as I want to help Rockyford grow, not only now, but also into the future. I made the decision to run for council based on the fact that Rockyford is a remarkable and thoughtful community, that has accepted me, and I want to give back. I dont want to see it fade away into a ghost town because there are so many young families already here. We

as a council should work on ideas on how to attract more young families. We should be proud of what has been accomplished, and the community spirit that we have. I am impressed by the community devotion in every event that we take on such as the rodeo, fall dinner, and many different fundraisers. Under the guidance of council, we will continue to pull together and keep making the town a jewel for future generations to come. Rockyford should feel confident in the council that it elects, and know that the elected officials want the best for the town. I know that I can offer the energy, and dedicate the time, to make this happen. I always see my plans and commitments through, and I look forward to serving the village of Rockyford.

Having grown up in Hussar, and now raising a family, I have witnessed many changes

within the Village. With change there are challenges and I am up for the challenge. A challenge ahead of a council is to promote the Village to the outside world to entice people to start business and to be residents of the Hussar community. Being a resident of the Village of Hussar for the past 37 years, I feel I would be a great spokesperson. I also understand that we need to keep our identity and small town values, as we move forward with growth. I would appreciate your support at the polls.

Leah Marie Smith

People should vote for me because; I have lived in Rockyford for 16 years. I raised a

family, which now resides here as well. I have volunteered for many of the organizations and attended as many events as possible. These groups and events are very important to small town life. They help to shape your community. I am honest, reliable ,knowledgeable and a good listener. I have experience as a council member. Rockyford is my home and will be for some time to come. Rockyford a great place to grow!

Tim Muir
When the good people of Hussar put an X beside my name, they are going to get many things; honesty and integrity above all. I truly believe being a member of council is a very

straightforward job. The decisions we have to make have to be good for the village and the people of Hussar. I have foresight to know the difference. Hussar will also get a renewed enthusiasm! Im very excited to share my thoughts and ideas with the new council and to hear what visions they have for our village. I have a really good feeling the next four years are going to be the best years Hussar has seen for a long time! Above all, a vote for me is a vote for a fresh new attitude. Thank you!

process to make Rockyford a thriving and caring community that will position itself to grow and prosper. As Albertans, we have seen the population of our province grow to four million people and they all need a place to live, a job, a club or organization to belong to, a recreation facility, and so on and not only today but well into the future Rockyford can play a role for these individuals. I have looked at the Calgary Metropolitan Plan, and what happens to communities that are around a municipality of 1 million people, and how growth will become something that is not only desired but also will need to be managed. On Oct. 21, voters will make a choice of whom they think should manage their communities. I think consideration will be given to track records, community involvement, positive thinking, and dedication. I believe that I have provided all four of these for the people of Rockyford, and the committees that I have represented for the past 15 years as councillor and mayor for our Village. If re-elected to Rockyford village council, I will represent our community in a fair and professional manner, making decisions based on facts, and strive for our communitys growth and prosperity. that its part of the job. I learned to remove myself from the situation at hand, and to weigh information before voting. Councils decisions arent always popular but as a councillor in Standard, I know that I can make the hard decisions. Popular or unpopular, right or wrong, I will always be willing to explain my decisions when a ratepayer asks. Council must always be able to answer to the ratepayers. I can give three reasons why voters should put an X beside my name on election day: 1) accountability, 2) transparency, 3) I care about the Village of Standard and surrounding area.

Over the last couple weeks, as candidates, we have had the opportunity to engage the public at forums, social gatherings, and articles in our local papers, to let the electorate understand our beliefs, dreams, and hope for our communities. During this time period, I have clearly stated what I have contributed to Rockyford to make it the place it is today. I am proud of the investment that we have made in our infrastructure upgrades, and the change of the downtown area to turn of the century business frontage. The decisions that I have made during my term in office have always been made considering the overall impact on Rockyford and our citizens, and sometimes the decision that is to be made is not always the easiest to make. As we move forward, the people of Rockyford will be met with new decisions and challenges, and I am very willing to continue to be a part of the

help by more tax dollars going into the county offers. There could also be industry into the hamlets as well. This would make the county more attractive for people to move and build their homes here. We must keep our farmers and their land in mind, and try to keep houses and industry in the hamlet and town limits, as the farmer needs their land to make a living and pay their taxes. Surely, we can make this county attractive for people to want to move and live here. I would certainly be open to any thoughts people would have on the matter, and discuss it with them one on one. We must all work together for the good of the county and the people.

regional approach that Hussar has embarked on with Standard, Rockyford, and The County of Wheatland. Working together makes sense, and the help we have received has been incredible. On council, you learn two things very quickly: things always take longer than they take, and that what you want and what you need are two different things. By focusing on what we need, and keeping the cost of living in Hussar within reason, we may just be able to get those things we want. Thank you everyone for all of your support, your encouragement, and for your trust in me.

Kevin Miller was asked, if elected, what is one thing you would like to be on the first agenda of the new council? I think if the county makes it easier for people to build houses in the hamlets, and not ask for a deposit for the right to build a house, this would make it easier and more attractive for people to move into the county. county on a daily basis. Unfortunately, I know that when you are dealing with professionals in an area of protection such as this, you will undoubtedly get some things wrong, and occasionally feelings will be hurt and noses out of joint. Its important that we all stay focused on the big picturesafe and professional fire protection for all of us who pay for it, and deserve it. As a new council member for Division 2 in the Wheatland County, I believe we can achieve a great working relationship with all of those boards and committees that we need in order to run the county efficiently and safely. concerns for the next term. I believe that I am the most qualified candidate to represent the ratepayers of Division #3 concerning the upcoming decisions to be made regarding our fire department. We are fortunate to have people working, volunteering, and maintaining an excellent rural fire department system. As a service, Ill be honest; I dont know what else they could or couldnt do for our county residents. I think for me, its more about what we can do for them. For instance, training; I believe we should fo-

cus in on members who time and time again rush to any situation almost every time they are called out, no matter what they are doing. I want to make sure that those members have the tools they need to be effective: proper clothing, proper tools, and proper training. I dont want members struggling to pay for these things themselves, if we can help in any way. I also think we need to review how each station is allocated funds. Each station needs a minimum just to keep the doors open, but one department that does 20 calls a year, versus one that does a 100, doesnt have the expenses of a busy Fire Hall and should probably be treated accordingly.

Donna Biggar
Fire Wise Consulting will be reading their Fire Service Review on Oct. 15. Fire protection is a great concern in all areas of the county, but Division 3 has a bigger concern with the presence of many large industrial companies, major highways, and the CPR main line. Our Fire Safety must be extremely efficient and versatile. For the last few months, we have been operating with a minimal to nil fire pro-

tection service and our community will be very interested in their recommendations. We are currently under the umbrella of Strathmore Rural Fire Fighters Association and are hoping to gain a stand-alone fire association, which would be governed locally. With this change, I believe communications between our residents, industries, and emergency services would be significantly improved. With open communications, we can better determine equipment needs and emergency plans. We are anticipating that the review board will comment that our areas needs are not currently being met and plans for a more diverse, well-organized association are necessary. I believe safety is one of the most important responsibilities of a councillor. For more information about me, visit www.donnabiggar.com

Having been involved both as a member of the Community Development Council and a subsequent member of the Gleichen Fire Association, I am very aware of the challenges facing local departments and Wheatland County. The biggest issue that I have seen, has been the lack of communication and overall coordination between the Fire Associations/ Departments and the County. This breakdown between the parties has resulted in several associations facing operating issues, and most

importantly, the short-term forced closure of the Gleichen Fire Hall by the County. I would welcome a structural change that would see the creation of one Fire Association made up of members of each community/rural fire department and Wheatland County. Such an association would enable the establishment of enforceable standard operating procedures at both the operations and administration levels of each department. Budgets, while still developed by each department, would be submitted to the association for approval and/ or suggested amendments. One association, providing support for each department would also assist departments with standardized purchasing while ensuring that replacement of aging equipment is done in a timely manner. Community based emergency services are a vital part of any communitys safety net, as well as an encouragement for community growth.

Dont forget to vote october 21st!

Golden Hills School trustees
According to the Early Childhood Development Community Information, in Wheatland County, just under 25 per cent of Kindergarten aged children are experiencing great difficulty in areas of development. The question this week was: if elected how will you support initiatives focused on young children and their families?

Jacki Kirk
The one change I would recommend is that the county provide for public input into this process. There is a standing Fire Review committee, so I assume that the appropriate bylaws (the Fire Association Bylaw from 1991 and the Fire Permit Bylaw from 2003) have been reviewed on a regular basis and found to be adequate. However, the current review board consists of only one representative from the eight Fire Associations, and from what I can determine, does not provide for public input. As I write this article, the county website, in two different places, has incorrectly listed the Gleichen Fire Departments current contacts. Is this an editing oversight or is it symptomatic of a more severe communication breakdown? Having lived in a community where we awoke one morning to discover the county had put a lock on our fire departments door, there truly does seem to be a need for improved communications between the County and its appointed fire guardians, the annually elected Rural Fire Associations.

In its annual report, our county recognized that communication is the key to measuring performance. The major concerns expressed by residents I recently met while on the campaign trail, would likely be addressed by improving communication. County initiatives such as the 10-year road improvement plan are excellent initiatives, but such plans need to be fluent. For instance, residents having concerns about traffic, should have immediate input with quick results whenever there is a safety or environmental concern. Now that the county has so many strategic plans in place, a review process with public input is needed to oversee that their implementation is actually achieving the expected results. That being said, council also needs to ensure that in house resources are being used to their fullest; and as the province begins to cut funding for municipal programs, they need to prioritize spending to ensure adequate funding for current and future essential services, such as water and roads, are in place. Thank you for your attention to my thoughts, and I hope you will consider me, my opinions, and my personal qualifications as you prepare to cast your ballot this Monday. Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns, or if you need a ride to a polling station on Oct. 21, please feel free to contact me at www. facebook.com/jacki.kirk.3, or phone or text 403-901-3322.

In my experience as an elected official, it is always best to consult all the resources available (e.g. studies, people involved, those with particular expertise etc.) before offering comments or making a decision on specific matters. If elected, I would be interested in reading this study and learning what Golden Hills School Division response has been. That

being said, I believe kindergarten is an important stage in a students education helping in many ways to lay the foundation for their future studies. The board needs to do what it can to ensure that parents, teachers, and school administrators have the resources needed to help every child get the best start possible. An important aspect of this is communication between all parties involved students, parents, teachers, administration, and the board. Each of these has a unique role, but with good communication and support, when students encounter challenges in kindergarten (or any grade), they can be identified and addressed sooner rather than later.

Corey Fisher
As with any initiative, we as parents, school board, and administration need to come together to decide what is the best program to deal with the development issues. We need to

lobby the provincial government to keep this matter in the front of their minds, as well as to make sure the government makes available the necessary funding required for program delivery. Once programming and funding are available, we will work with administration and parents to make sure the program is made available to all young children in the division. As with any issue or concern within the school division, it takes everyone to come together to come up with a solution that is right for students.

Remembering our roots

July 18-20, 2014
CARSELAND 1924
In the early years, Carseland had a CP Railroad station and also a Livery Barn. The Livery Barn kept horses for people - wishing to go to Calgary by train. They would board and room the horses during the time they were gone, for $2.00 per day (Hay, water and shelter). Hugh Hebbes and Alecia Phillips planned to elope January 19, 1924 boarding the horses at the Livery Barn and then flagging down the train and catching the 4:30 a.m. special for Calgary. On arrival in Calgary the busy couple each checked in to the Colonial and the Empress Hotels and then did the necessary shopping at the Hudson Bay Co. She an Ivory silk wedding dress, head piece, gloves, silk stockings and Ivory leather shoes. He a suit and finery, and did the arranging for a minister, a church and the specific documents. He went all the way up Centre Street N., directed by the church caretaker to find the minister. The wedding was to take place that evening at 10 p.m. The minister had known Hughs father Joseph (County Constable Chairman of the Deacons Board of St. Marys Anglican Church, in Eaton Bray) back in England, and for that reason was willing to perform the wedding ceremony late that evening at the Anglican Pro Cathedral. Along the way he also recruited the caretaker of the Church and his wife to be witnesses for the occasion. The ceremony having ended, the couple then walked about four blocks to The Club Cafe for the Wedding Dinner. The groom had a roast beef dinner while the bride had traditional oysters with Ice Cream for dessert they then retired to the Empress Hotel. The next morning, Sunday, they went to the church service. The weather was very cold it was January in Alberta. Monday Hugh and Alecia arrived back in Carseland the horses were in the livery barn taken care of while they were away and they started life as a married couple in the Carseland area. So ends a perfect weekend. Submitted by Roger Hebbes

land. Often the only cash they had was the egg money from the sale of surplus eggs. They had plenty to eat, but it was a very monotonous diet at times. They had chickens, eggs, milk, butter, cottage cheese, buttermilk, flour and porridge ground from their own grain, home-made bread, home grown vegetables and a beef-ring. Betty attended Sarcee Butte School through Grade 9, taught by her sister Marjorie, who was by then a qualified teacher. For Grades 10 to 12, she attended Crescent Heights High School in Calgary, followed by a year at Hepburn Business College. She then worked at Ingraham and Bell Hospital Supplies. While attending school, she lived in a boarding house in north Calgary, and it was here that she met her future husband Marcillous (Mars) W. Bolinger who was born in 1917. Mars worked at the Ogden Shops, and prior to this had lived and worked in California while learning to be an aeronautical engineer. He had returned to Canada when WW2 broke out. Betty and Mars were married at Three Hills in 1943, and initially lived in Calgary. In 1947, they moved to the Bolinger family farm at Gleichen, and farmed there for the next 60 years. This marriage produced five children, but they lost an 11-year-old son in a farming accident in 1958. On Bettys 90th Birthday last year, her 10 grandchildren helped her celebrate. She was an active member of the United Church and a long-time member of the Gleichen Community Choir, and has enjoyed quilting and needlework. She took it upon herself to always ensure the church was suitably decorated with flowers for all occasions. Throughout her life, Betty has been a keen photographer and has taken countless photos of family and community events. She advises that as a family, they have been proud custodians of the land since 1907. Betty has recently moved to Prince of Peace Manor in Calgary.

John Godsman Times Contributor The history of the Bolinger family originates in the early 1900s, when they moved from Tennessee to Colorado, then to Gleichen. Bettys family name was Ticknor, and her father and mother, along with her sister Marjorie (age six), moved from Iowa to the Three Hills area of Alberta in 1918. They were like most settlers in that day and age drawn here by the promise of cheap land. In Iowa, farms were much smaller and fields were lined with groves of trees including orchards. On arriving at Three Hills, they were met by her fathers cousins - Ira Young and Wilfred McCubbin. The Youngs were preparing to move to Florida, so Bettys parents moved into the Youngs house, located one half mile east of Sarcee School, at Ghost Pine Creek. They farmed there for the next 13 years. When Marjorie was asked if she didnt miss the trees of Iowa, she said, Yes, but there are a nice lot of fence posts! The Sarcee Schoolhouse was the social centre, serving the community in many ways, as did the Ghost Pine Store. It was 14 miles west to Three Hills. Betty was born Nov. 4, 1922. The first nine years of her life, at Ghost Pine Creek, were very precious ones for her. Her memories include communing with nature, helping her parents with the chores and generally enjoying life. This included looking after Shetland ponies from the Drumheller coal mines. These ponies were put out on farms during the summer for their health. She found the dust storms of the Dirty Thirties very frightening. Sometimes the dust was so thick, it blotted out the sun. Her mother hung wet sheets over the windows and stuffed rags along the bottom of the doors to cut down the amount of dust entering the house. During those lean years they truly lived off the

A Vote for Your Future. A Vote for Change.

Approximately 30 Strathmore High School cosmetology students attended the ABA hair show in Calgary Oct. 6 and 7.

Learning the tricks of the trade

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Cosmetology students from Strathmore High School (SHS) attended the Allied Beauty Association (ABA) hair show in Calgary Oct. 6 and 7. The hair show is a twice yearly convention where industry specialists and experts gather to discuss whats happening in the industry each year. Its a great opportunity for students to see whats going on in the hair industry, said SHS cosmetology instructor Cheryl Davidson. During the show, there are educational classes going on around the perimeter of the convention floor where students can take in a demonstration. There is also a main stage where competitions take place between senior stylists for

things like trendy cuts and colours, an updo competition, fantasy hair and esthetics. For the past 11 years, Davidson has taken her students to the show in Calgary in the fall, and to Edmonton in the spring. They look forward to it every year, they like the shopping part too, said Davidson. Industry tools and products are sold at a discount to the attendees of the hair show. Davidson said the students will buy tools of the trade and then want to come back and test them out. The students always come back and they want to try stuff. Thats what I love -- the experimental part, said Davidson. She said she also enjoys attending the show because she gains inspiration from it for the following year.

RE-ELECT

Every year countless pumpkins are carved across North America to help get people in the spirit for Halloween, but as we turn the calendar over to November many people no longer have a use for that jack-o-lantern that was sitting on their front step. This year Strathmore FCSS and the Youth Club of Strathmore have found an innovative and unique resolution to that issue

Our First Pumpkins

in the Park

This is a great way for families to interact and enjoy this season. On November 1st, 2013 we are hoping that all residents of Strathmore that have carved pumpkins will drop them off at Kinsman Park before 4:00 pm. Volunteers will set them up throughout the park and light them for a festive evening spectacular. For three hours you and your family can wander the park and enjoy the festivities. The event begins at 6 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m. Hot Chocolate will be available to help keep you warm and music will fill the air. Anyone taking in the event is encouraged to bring along a non-perishable food item, new unwrapped toy or cash donation for the Strathmore & District Christmas Hamper Society. If you would like to extend the life-span of your jack-o-lantern this Halloween season and you want everyone to enjoy your jack-o-lantern as well, all you have to do is drop off your carved pumpkin at Kinsman Park on Friday, November 1st, 2013 by 4:00 pm . If you would like to volunteer with any aspect of the event from pickups to drop offs, or setting the pumpkins up at the park, please give Dahrlyne Knaus a call at Strathmore FCSS - 403-934-9090. With everyones support, this could be an amazing event for all to enjoy.

Making healthy choices easy

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Tim Drover was hired on as the new cafeteria chef this year at Strathmore High School (SHS). He brought with him Janet Murdoch, and between the two of them, they are cooking up a storm. Drover and Murdoch are making 90 per cent of every meal from scratch. They (the school) wanted a change in the menu. The menu before was a little stale, a little older; it relied on deep fried foods and stuff like that, said Drover. With my background in cooking, they wanted more fresh foods, and more healthy choices for the students and the staff. Drover said it is cheaper to cook fresh rather than bringing in frozen product; the key is being willing to put in the time in making the meals. The schools menu runs on a four-week rotating schedule. Each day offers a soup and sandwich meal for $5, a meal for $6 and a pizza special for $3. Some examples of a $6 meal includes grilled chicken burger with home fries, chicken souvlaki, rice and Greek salad, or pulled pork with coleslaw and veggies. Each day of the four week rotation the pizza changes, which helps keep the menu fresh. Drover said they make their own salad dressing, with the exception of Caesar dressing. They also make their own pizza sauce, soups and gravy. Anything that can be made fresh and from scratch is done so, within reason. Another thing Drover wanted to do when he was hired is keep the price reasonable. For example, all salads sell for $4. He noted the salads are one the biggest sellers at the cafeteria and they often sell out. My philosophy when I came here was to have the healthier food cheaper than the not so healthy food. So when they come here and they have a choice between chocolate milk at $1.50 and bottled water at 75 cents instead of $2, theyre going to get the water, said Drover. One thing were trying to do now is reach out to the parents. I know sometimes they dont want to give their kids money because they might go to McDonalds or other places, so were trying to sell coupon books. Normally our meals are $6; we sell four (meal coupons) for $20, so they save $4 for their lunch. Were trying to get the parents to buy these coupons to give to their kids so they dont have to worry about giving them money. They come, they hand in a coupon and get their meal. Nothing on the menu is over $6. A bowl of fresh fruit sells for 75 cents, veggie trays for $1. Our goal is not to get rich off of this, its to feed the kids, said Drover. We were told we would get a lot of rejection because they (the students) dont have chicken fingers and fries now, and its been totally the opposite. Its been nothing but positive. Were really, really pleased with the response were getting. Between Murdoch and Drover, they are working on feeding 700 people at the school. There have already been many days where they sell out, and a number of staff members are eating their lunch in the cafeteria almost daily. Im very passionate about what I am doing right now. My kids are coming to this high school, and you know, we sort of dont realize what happens in high school. You send your kids off and give them money for lunch and you presume that they are getting something good, said Drover. Its my goal that the parents at home are comfortable that their kids are getting something healthy at school. Having Drover and Murdoch in the cafeteria has been a resounding success so far with staff and students alike The big push we wanted is to go healthier and have lots of options, and hes done that, said Associate Principal Doug Raycroft. As a high school, we want our students to have choice; but it is nice when they have healthy choices. Meal coupons will be available for purchase at the high school on Oct. 22 during parent-teacher interviews.
Tim Drover, (l) and Janet Murdoch have taken over the cafeteria this year at Strathmore High School. The pair whip up homemade, fresh meals for almost 700 people daily.

Harvest supper
Lisa Hodder Toddle Inn Day Care Society Board Member Cassandra Sloane and I worked all day on a large turkey dinner for the Community Harvest Supper in support of Toddle Inn Daycare on Oct. 2. We had total of five cakes donated to be judged, and these, plus the dinner tickets, raised just over $1,000 after expenses. The three judges we had were amazing. Shelly Reed (the new general manager of Strathmore Boston Pizza), who was there to judge cakes, also helped us with coffee and cut potatoes. The Church coffee machine broke down and Shelly took all the containers to Boston Pizza and filled them with coffee. Brad Walls (candidate for Strathmore Town Council), was also there to judge the cakes. He stayed and helped with the entire evening. We had him stirring salads, making German chocolate coconut icing and greeting guests at the door. Koreann Bland who also judged the cakes, stayed for most of the evening, carving turkeys, making icing for carrot cakes and finishing off the stuffing for the supper. Berneice Bland was also a huge help with coffee, tea and dishes. Some Toddle Inn Day Care staff and board members were available throughout the day helping with setting up tables and cleaning up afterwards, which helped Cassandra and I out. Toddle Inn staff who helped included Roxanne Jones (director), Laure Ness (president), Vickie Dykens (secretary), Terry and Amy Nitschmann, Wyone Baluch and Mark. Ron Urichuk donated four turkeys and two hams. The Strathmore Station, Roadhouse and Boston Pizza donated gift certificates. Canadian Tire and Home Hardware

donated prizes for our cake decorating event. WestJet donated two travel vouchers for the door prize. First place in the cake decorating contest was Lacy with that amazing barrel cake, of course. She won a gift certificate to The Station restaurant and a gift package from Home Hardware. We wish to sincerely thank all businesses for their donations. The Toddle Inn kids decorated three cakes in total for the contest, so we decided to give the Toddle Inn the gift certificates from Boston Pizza. On their next Friday off from school they are going to host a pizza party. We had Brad Walls draw the name for the WestJet tickets. Ron Urichuk was the winner. The Toddle Inn has a long road to hit that $10,000.00 goal; this will be one of our main topics at our next board meeting. I think as a board member, seeing the parents of the day care help out more often would definitely benefit the day care. But, we are working with families that struggle with day-to- day issues, let alone trying to help their day care raise money for improvements. Its sad that the government cut this grant, our lives are already complicated, and we have all added another government issue to the pile.

Artists Among Us in 8th year

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Hope Bridges Society works to change hearts and minds through arts, building connections and overcoming segregation. Toward that end, one of their largest events is their annual Artists Among Us Gala, taking place this year at the Hope Community Convenant Church on Oct. 24. We try to go beyond labels and description; were really inclusive, says Sheila Konschuh, chairperson of Hope Bridges Society. Every year we really strive to bring an excellent, interesting, diverse and eclectic mix of performers together. The goal of the gala is to display and celebrate the creative gifts possessed by society members. If you think about it, often we do hear about performances that are strictly to celebrate people with disabilities or performances that are about perfection. What we do is an experience that really is inspiring, Konschuh said. The audience grows each year, and the feedback after the performance each year is the same people are wowed. It really celebrates the importance of value and belonging. The Rosebud School of the Arts has been involved for a number of years. Their leadership has talked about that; its been very inspiring to their students to participate in this because of the idea just letting go, and being who you need to be in your performance, Konschuh said. Tickets are $10; the doors open at 6:30 p.m. with performances beginning at 7 p.m. The show is roughly 80 minutes, with coffee and dessert offered afterwards. It really allows people to enjoy a snack and to visit, and to really think and talk about the performance. Theres really a time of fellowship afterwards, Konschuh said.

Shipleys continued support of community initiatives is genuinely appreciated, said Osachuk. The community supports my business, so its nice to be able to give back to my community, explains Shipley. The BBQ really drew in the community which in turn helped make the RCMP opened house a great success, commented Sgt. Reilly.

The AA Wheatland Braves celebrated their peewee league championship from last year before their home opener on Oct. 13; they then celebrated a 11-3 victory over the Badlands Longhorns. 2013 Champions are pictured.

Braves must improve ethic

Strathmore High School won their first ever cross country pennant, with 22 runners competing in Oct. 9s zones in Canmore. Six have a spot at provincials in Drayton Valley on Oct. 19, though three more may qualify as other spots open up from runners choosing not to participate. Almost all Strathmore runners had personal best times at zones.

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Following a rough loss on Oct. 12 to the Badlands Longhorns 4-3, the peewee Wheatland Braves stormed back the next day at home 11-3. In the first matchup, the Longhorns went up 3-0, and the Braves Tarun Fizer scored a hat-trick within an eight minute span to tie it up; the Longhorns then scored with just under three minutes remaining to take the win. I think they had a rather stern pre-game message on Sunday, Keith Klemmensen said, coach of the Braves. I think the coaching staff probably wasnt pleased with the lack of effort that was displayed on Saturday. We got the result on Saturday that we earned, quite frankly. The 11-3 victory was Wheatlands home opener, where they celebrated last seasons league championship. Klemmensen believes the ceremony may have spurred on a few of the returning players, but everyone needs to work harder. We have to grow up, quick, Klemmensen said. Its not anything thats going to get better for us if we dont give the attention and care that are asked at practices and during games. If thats not paid attention to 100% of the time, its very likely this team will not do as well. Fizer continued his streak in the second game, with a goal and an assist, while Majid Kaddoura and Connor Bertamini each had hat-tricks. Other multi-point scorers were Ryan Orford, Kyle Crnkovic and Cole Berg. This is new to a lot of the guys. Its certainly a lot more work than they thought it was going to be, Klemmensen said. The Braves next game is against Red Deer Parkland at home on Oct. 19. Their record sits at 2-4-1. The bantam Wheatland Warriors won 3-2 against the Airdrie Lightning thanks to Robert Butterwicks game winning goal with 1:39 remaining in the game. Other goal scorers were Kyle Merkosky and Braydon Neiszner the latter on the powerplay. The Warriors are off to a fantastic start, improving to 6-0 on the season; they have the lowest goals against in the league with 11, and the most goals for with 43. They also play a very disciplined game, leading teams with the lowest penalty minutes (66). The bantams will have played The Edge School on Oct. 16 prior to the time of print, and will have their home opening weekend against the Taber Golden Suns and the Airdrie Lightning on Oct. 19 and 20. Another undefeated squad so far this season are the 3-0 Wheatland Chiefs; the midget squad defeated the Airdrie Lightning in their home opener 9-2 on Oct. 13. Blair Roszell had two goals and one assist (along with eight penalty minutes); Cody Willis and Quinton Peplinski each had one goal and two assists. The team has the least goals against in the North Division with 8, thanks to the play of goalie Ben Bogstie, who saved 32 of 34 shots on Oct. 13. They will have played the CBHA Blackhawks on Oct. 16 prior to the time of print, and again at home on Oct. 20, against the Lacombe Rockets.

Spartans run to first at zones

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Strathmore High School (SHS) Spartans travelled to the Canmore Nordic Centre on Oct. 9 for cross country zones. Though no Spartan finished first, or even medalled, the teams collaborative score won them their first cross country pennant in the schools history. Almost all 22 runners from SHS had personal best times. Six Spartans are guaranteed spots at provincials in Drayton Valley on Oct. 19; Maria Fanning for junior girls, Tamara Adamschuk and Karly Larson for intermediate girls, Carter Jones for senior girls, and Brendan Roberts and Kyle Foster for intermediate boys. We usually take about four or five kids to provincials for as long as Ive been coaching, so weve been consistent, said Spartans coach Paul Sonsteby. But the thing thats different this year, in our 23-kids team, we have so many strong runners. We dont have a weak runner. Almost every category had a Spartan qualify for provincials. Sonsteby said that even though some of his team werent runners at the start of the season, they became dedicated to improve. I saw probably five runners go from fair to on the cusp of provincials. These werent just personal bests we were setting. I cant think of a kid who didnt improve by at least a minute and a half to two minutes; on a 22-minute run, thats pretty significant, Sonsteby said. Youre throwing a mountain into it too, and a pretty heated competition. It was a vast improvement. Its an individual sport but we got a fantastic team result. Luke Macdonald, Taylor Keegan and Gabi LeMoine are probable for Drayton Valley as well if another school does not submit their zone qualified runners. My gut tells me that well be taking nine runners, Sonsteby said. What happens a lot of times is that cross country runners are triple-sport kids; theyre in volleyball, theyre in hockey, theyre in football, theyre in something. Provincials are on a Saturday and some of those sports are getting into playoffs. A volleyball coach may say, well you have to choose one or the other, and thats sometimes the way it goes. Sonsteby noted that he was very proud of team captains Carter Jones and Avery Johnson. I was really hoping Carter would make it in. Shes on of our most improved runners. Shes worked so hard to improve her running and she was just on the cusp (of provincials), he said. Averys one of the only runners whos been with me through Grade 10. Shes consistent; shes not a super speedster and she knows it. Shes a swimmer, shes a triathlete, but she likes to run cross country. Each school must have two runners in each category. In the senior girls, without the two team captains racing, SHS would not have participated in zones. Because Avery placed where she did, she was the difference between us winning the zone or not. So this consistent, steady, dedicated runner, who improves a little bit every year, shes what won us the banner. That was a feel good thing, Sonsteby said. Brendan Roberts finished highest for the Spartans in eighth, while Maria Fanning finished best for the girls at tenth place. Maria is a tremendously strong runner, Sonsteby said. Shes going to be one of our elite runners for the next three years. Medals go to the top three, ribbons go to the top eight, and the top 18 qualify for provincials. Weve had kids medal before, Sonsteby said. Its been a weird year. Ive seen kids take home hardware before; we took home no hardware but we took home the zone. To be that kid, who maybe came in 25th or 30th out of 60 runners, and goes well, Im not going to provincials, but to know that being in that top half, you contributed to the zone. It really boosts them as a team, I think.

Skateman rolls through Strathmore

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Kevin Ebra, also known as Skateman, left Toronto on July 10 on an 120 day, inline skate journey towards Vancouver to support children with cancer, and to set a new Guinness world record in skating distance. He whirled through Strathmore on Oct. 9 on route to Calgary. Winter time is very hard, Ebra said. Im traveling from Toronto to Vancouver, and the wind is traveling Vancouver to Toronto. This is my big challenge. After leaving his home in Ontarios capital, Ebra skated to Montreal, Ottawa and Val-dOr the opposite direction of his final destination as he needed more kilometres to go towards his 6,700 km goal. The official current record is 6,100 km held by a man in Vietnam. Ebra, a native of Iran, has skated in his home country and in Turkey as well, for causes such as multiple sclerosis and Japanese Tsunami Relief. This is his sixth longest journey; one of his last efforts had him complete 6,500 km, but since it was not official, it did not count towards Guinnesss records. Every year, I do a different cause, in a different country, Ebra said. I say thanks to everyone supporting my cause. As an inspiration for this years route, Ebra has chosen to follow in the footsteps of Terry Fox. This guy gave me a very good idea. Hes not just supporting cancer. Hes a very different guy, Ebra said. People in the world are a very big family. They need help, together with other people. The 28-year-old travels up to 80 km per day, reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h when skating downhill. Ebra doesnt even find this the most difficult part of his ride. Mountains are a very, very big challenge for me, Ebra said. Skating is a little bit hard; bicycling, every time you sit. Skating is different for me, and I like skating in the roads. Thats my hobby. Ebra and the Skateman team have 18 exhibitions
Skateman Kevin Ebra is traveling from Toronto to Vancouver in 120 days, a distance of 6,700 km, to bring awareness to childrens cancer and to break the Guinness world record for long distance inline skating. Ebra skated through Strathmore on Oct. 9 during his route from Medicine Hat to Calgary.

along his route, where his books and clothes will be on sale to go towards a cure for childrens cancer. Nov. 17 is his expected finish date in Vancouver. Schmit wins rematch after brothers passing

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter When mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Justin Schmit of Strathmore fought Medicine Hats Mike Goehr over two years ago, he came out victorious after a war of three rounds. On Sept. 27 at Medicine Hat Arena, the two squared off again in a King of the Cage match basically a junior division of the UFC with Schmit once again on top in a much faster-paced battle. Goehr was down after two rounds. Schmit is the only fighter Goehr has ever lost to. The first time I fought him, it went to the judges scorecards, so we went the full three rounds, Schmit said. It was a great fight; it was light heavyweight at the time, and it was one of the best fights in Canada that year. Schmits younger brother Eric, who passed away this past August, was also a mixed martial arts fighter. Schmit said he didnt fight necessarily in remembrance of his brother, but Eric was in his thoughts during the match. Id already signed a contract with King of the Cage before he passed away, but Eric wouldnt have wanted me to pull out of the fight, Schmit said. With 10 fights under his belt in the past few years, Schmit said he wants to take some time to analyze and heal both from fighting, and from Erics death. I was thinking about retiring before Eric died, Schmit said. When your brother does something like fightingI never liked watching Eric fight and he never liked watching me fight. But I mean we both loved it. When Eric was alive, it was kind of a love/hate relationship. Schmit said that while Erics participation in mixed martial arts didnt have anything to do with his death, there is speculation that head injuries and suicide have some correlation. I havent seen any scientific evidence to back it up. Maybe people who are prone to participating in high intensity, high contact extreme sports might be more prone to depression and mental illness, Schmit said. He made enough of an impact and a statement in his fighting career that I dont need to go further in making people remember him. But obviously, there are steps for people to remember the person he was, and provide awareness and help for people dealing with suicide. If Justin does choose to fight again, he wont do so until next spring. In the meantime, he plans on helping his teammates.. My bodys starting to break down, but there are a lot more opportunities for fighters out there than there were five years ago when I started, he said. I dont ever plan on stopping training or being a martial artist, its just whether or not I plan on getting in the cage again.
Justin Schmit defeated Mike Goehr in a King of the Cage rematch in Medicine Hat on Sept. 27, about a month and a half after his younger brother, fellow fighter Eric Schmit passed away. Schmit (l) with youngest brother Conner after his victory.

Bisons split on the road

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter After a 4-1 away victory against the Calgary Royals on Oct. 11, the UFA Bisons travelled to Red Deer Oct. 12 to play the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs. This was the teams first weekend away from Strathmore, and the travel proved to be too much en route to a 4-2 loss to the Chiefs. These were two tough teams, said Bisons coach Dan MacDonald. If we could have won both, we would have been really happy, but to at least get a split is a good thing when youre playing good teams in their rinks. MacDonald coached the Chiefs for five years over a decade ago, and knew they were going to be a challenge. We did our best. Its just one of those things. Theyre a little bit more advanced than we are right now, MacDonald said. There wasnt much of a turnaround; it was easier for them, being at home waiting for us. At the same time, it was still a good game. The Bisons sit 4-2 on the season, and are second in the Chrysler Division with eight points only one point behind the Red Deer Chiefs. We have to counter some of the things they do, MacDonald said. We have to be better defensively, is one thing. We had a weak start, and thats being on the bus perhaps tired a little bit. But at the same time, you have to start your game and push pace better than we did. We let them come to us. The Bisons power play continues to improve as the season progresses, as they scored goals with the man advantage in Calgary and in Red Deer. Well, were very good that way, MacDonald said. Its just helping with the cause. Its really helpful when you score on the power play. Bison forward Mackenzie Bauer is tied for first in league scoring with nine points, with defenseman Tristan Thompson not far behind with seven. Both scored each night this weekend. Theyre both leading us. Tristans leading the defense with his play, and Mackenzie is one of our best offensive players. Theyre playing really well, MacDonald said. The Bisons travel to Grand Prairie to play Ernies Sports Storm on Oct. 19, then follow up in Edmonton Oct. 20 against Gregg Distributors.

Busy! Busy. Why is that the answer so many times when we ask someone how they are doing? It seems that we pride ourselves in how busy we are. When someone tells us how busy they are we even feel as if we have to try to outdo them with our busy schedule. John Lennon is quoted as saying, life is what happens when you are busy making other plans. Many years earlier socrates said, beware of the barrenness of a busy life. We are busy people. We all find something to do, and then we add more. When we had our first child, my wifes grandma said, I wish I could have a child now with all the conveniences. Anyone who would compare our life and its conveniences to that of even a generation or two ago, would wonder how all the time saving devices havent helped to give us more time. We are busier than ever. All our gadgets and electronic tools have not helped us to slow down. you know what busy means? It means you are doing something, you are active. One definition is: full of distracting detail. The example given is a busy design. In this sense, busy means that there is way too much going on for the average person to make sense of it. And that is what many of our lives are like. someone asked me once, do you ever stop and do nothing? That was a weird question for me. How do you do nothing? But I think that when I stop and do nothing is when I can actually talk with my wife. I actually have time to listen and to hear her. We seem to be scared of actually having some time to stop and think. Its as if we are worried about what we will think about if we dont keep doing something anything. Its as if we are worried about how we are going to communicate with our spouse if we actually have some time to stop and do nothing together. Will we have anything to talk about? And in that busyness we have no time to think about spiritual things. Psalm 46: 10 says, Be still and know that I am God. Another version says it this way: Our God says, Calm down, and learn that I am God! If we want to get to know God and want to explore spiritual things, we have to stop. We have to slow down and allow time for us to connect with God. Why not take some time, maybe on the weekend, to just do nothing? sit down in a comfortable chair or somewhere nice outdoors, open a Bible, and allow God to speak. The Strathmore Minor Ringette Association is working with the Because I am a Girl group to promote awareness about the group and their cause. On Oct. 10 a fundraising Jelly Bean Dance was held and the kids were encouraged to wear pink. There was an All Star game held on Oct. 11 between the University of Calgary and Calgarys U19AA teams.

Because I am a Girl
Sonny Warrack SMRA Fundraising Coordinator Because I am a Girl is an organization based on closing the gap on gender equality in developing countries. The right to education, medicine and proper nourishment must be equal whether male or female. The girl is the cornerstone to positive change, changes that end the vicious circle of poverty, safer communities, the end of child marriage, higher literacy rates among youth. This kind of change can lead whole countries out of poverty. After all a country is only as good as its people. Because I am a Girl has their sights set on this very goal and the Strathmore Minor Ringette Association (SMRA) is very proud to be involved in this very proactive initiative. While SMRA is a minor sports organization first and foremost, our board felt that because we are almost entirely a female sport, that we could be a shining example to the world of what girl power can accomplish when given equal opportunity, says Sonny Warrack. Because I am a Girl is a natural alliance for SMRA and its players, the players and members are excited to be apart of such an inspiring cause. Congratulations to Emily McComber from U14 for her winning design in the token contest. Her artwork was chosen for the token that will be sold throughout the season. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to the Because I am a Girl campaign. The original artwork for the token was auctioned off for $500 before the All Star game on Friday, Oct.11.The ringette teams will be having fun selling the tokens through out the season. The tokens sell for $2 and will all be proudly displayed upstairs in the Strathmore twin arenas. We hope to have several thousand on display by the end of the year and we encourage all our members and all people interested to check out our facebook page as well as our website www. strathmoreringette.ca to see how they can contribute. All positive comments will only help the great momentum which we anticipate our teams will generate to Because I am a girl, comments Warrack. On October 10 SMRA held a fundraising Jelly Bean Dance and on Fri. Oct.11 SMRA declared it the Day of the Girl and to celebrate held a free All Star game between the University of Calgary and Calgarys U19AA teams. The turnout was incredible and they are well on their way to reaching their set goal of $5,000 for the year.
