Using the Smart Switch Management Utility

The Smart Switch Management (SSM) utility, among other features, allows you to discover switches on your network that have SSM implemented on them and to access their management software. This capability is especially useful when you enable DHCP on a switch that does not have a console interface, allowing you to access the switchs web browser management software without knowing the switchs IP address.
Note The following procedures show how to run the utility directly from the documentation CD. In this situation, Windows displays numerous messages. When you copy the files to your workstation, these messages are not displayed.

Locating the Switches

To locate the switches, perform the following procedure:
1. On the documentation CD that was shipped with the switch, click the SSM Utility link on the main page, as shown below.

The following links are displayed on a new page.

2. Click SSM Utility.

The web browser opens and displays the main page for the switch you selected (assuming that the switch is powered on), and you can manage the switch in the same way you would have done if you had manually entered the switchs IP address. To manage the switch in the future without using the SSM utility, make a note of the IP address assigned by the DHCP server.
