HIGHLIGHT
Thursday, October 23 Saturday, October 26 7:30pm ZIMMERMANN & DE PERROT NY PREMIERE In this trailblazing work directed by the inventive Swiss duo Zimmermann & de Perrot, seven performers inhabit a topsyturvy world where, at any moment, the ceiling can become a floor, a floor can become a wall, and a door can become a chasm. Conceived by choreographer Martin Zimmermann and composer Dimitri de Perrot, who performs his ecstatic original scores, Hans was Heiri offers a hilarious portrait of human relationships conveyed through a witty scenic language all its own. La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is a unique and fascinating building project with Antoni Gaudi, an enormous number of workers and a history full of extreme highs and lows. The history of this building, which has been under construction since 1882 and is today only half finished, is the point of departure for a film about this mysterious process of creation, the question of our human creative power and to what ends it is used. The dirctor Stefan Haupt will be present for a Q&A prior to the screening. Image: Sagrada Mystery of Creation, Stefan Haupt, Switzerland, 2012, 95 min.

black leather motorcycle jacket and a white helmet. Rather than commence his journey in the water, a truck tows Signer on a dry road as the bottom of the kayak is slowly scraped away. As Signer is dragged along a Swiss country road, a herd of dairy cows gallop alongside him, as if captivated by the surreal scene. By decontextualizing the familiar, Signer expands, in a humorously subversive and poetic vein, our view of the world. Image: Roman Signer, Kayak, 2000. Video Still. This is the first US exhibition of the artist's works in thirty years. Through January 12, 2014. Image: Balthus (Balthasar Klossowski) Thrse, 1938. Thursday, October 24 LAZY BYTES EXHIBITION OPENING As part of its effort to renew our relationship to the digital world, and under the title of Lazy Bytes, the EPFL+ECAL Lab collaborated with the Kudelski Group to invite four major design schools to rethink the remote control: the Royal College of Art in London, ENSCILes Ateliers de Paris, Parsons The New School for Design in New York, and the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. To concentrate on the value of the object in relation to the user, the projects were given the freedom to limit the number of functions. The results fit well alongside more complex interfaces for controlling our domestic environment. They aim to challenge and renew our daily relationship with the digital world. The exhibition will be on view until October 31. Parsons The New School for Design 66 Fifth Avenue at 13th Street New York, NY www.epfl-ecal-lab.ch

BASEL

THOMAS SCHTTE OCTOBER 6 FEBRUARY 2, 2014 Fondation Beyeler presents the figural works of Thomas Schtte, and consequently the human figure and its various forms of expression. Presenting sculptures from the past thirty years inside the museum and outside in the gardens, the show brings together well-known pieces as well as works that are rarely seen in public and others that are brand new. Powerfully expressive women of steel and aluminum, mighty spirits of bronze, doll-like figurines of modeling clay, larger than life heads and figures of ceramic, wood and glass, delicate watercolor portraits, and photographs rich in contrasts Schttes oeuvre testifies to a delight in radical experimentation and defies exact classification. It is this that makes him one of the most fascinating and innovative artists of the present day. Image: Thomas Schtte at Fondation Beyeler. www.fondationbeyeler.ch
