Research Methods for Public Administration and Policy Fall 2012

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT #2:

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY & LITERATURE REVIEW OUTLINE

Due October 17, 2012 In research reports, literature reviews are so much more than just the verbiage between the research question and the description of the methods. Actually, a literature review is a critical piece to any good research. A good literature review does three things for the research: 1) it provides context to the research.; 2) it justifies the need for the research.; and 3) it helps hone the research topic. A critical step in developing a literature review is actually reading the literature you find on your research topic, and critically evaluating their qualities. Afterwards, you can begin to weave an original story told by the body of literature you reviewed. This assignment is designed to bring structure to these activities. Directions This assignment has two parts: one that builds an annotated bibliography, and another that outlines a literature review from your bibliography. Annotated bibliography Search academic articles and published reports related to your research question. Identify over 10 of these to critique, and possibly include in your literature review. Your research paper may also cite non-academic sources (e.g., news articles, websites), but you must include at least 10 peer-reviewed academic articles and published reports. You should pay close attention to the journals in public/non-profit administration or policy, since this is your field. 3. Get these articles and read them. (This may require going to the library!) 4. For each article, summarize and critique it within one page. A recommended template for these summary critiques is attached. Feel free to adjust the template to suite your specific research needs, but you must use a structured template. This will help you look at each article in a methodic and objective way. These summaries and critiques will guide your writing of the literature review.

Literature review outline There are many ways of constructing a literature review, and you are free to use any process you are comfortable with. The following method may be useful, but you may try to do a literature review with your own methods. 1. Review the summaries and critiques you have written for all the articles youve collected.

2. Pay particular attention to what youve written about each articles relevance to your research question. This is the strongest clue to where the each article fits in your review. Also note the major message of each article. This is another strong clue to its place in the review. (A single article might have several places in the review.) 3. With these things in mind, develop an outline of the story you want to tell in the review. Remember that a literature review is not a summary of the literature, but your original story built from the pieces of literature youve reviewed. Ideally, the end of the story is a cliffhanger, justifying the need for the current research. Attach your article summaries to your outline and submit them together to me. Both the summaries and the outline may be single-spaced. Use 1 margins on all sides and a 12-point font. You will write your final, narrative, literature review for the final research proposal. In this assignment you should only submit a printed work.
