Key Words: Mind Mapping, Descriptive Writing A Mind Map is a powerful graphic technique which provides a universal key to unlock the potential of the brain. It harnesses the full range of cortical skills word, image, number, logic, rhythm, colour and spatial awareness in a single, uniquely powerful manner. In so doing, it gives you the freedom to roam the infinite expanses of your brain. The Mind Map can be applied to every aspect of life where improved learning and clearer thinking will enhance human performance. Abilene (2004:7) describes some principles in descriptive writing. First, a descriptive writing has one clear dominant impression. If someone is describing snowfall, for example it is important for him/her to decide and let his/her readers know if it is threatening or lovely; in order to have one dominant impression it cannot the both. The dominant impression guides the authors selection of detail and is thereby made clear to the reader in the thesis sentence. Classroom Action Research is learning strategy which is developed to solve the problem in the class (Susilo et al, 2009:1). Therefore, the design of this research is classroom action research. The researcher chose the classroom action research in conducting her study because the aim of the classroom action research is to improve the current class condition or to increase the quality of any educational matters. Based on the study result conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Muncar. it is known that the eighth year students still have some problem in writing ability. In this research the researcher decided to the use of mind mapping to improve students ability in

descriptive writing to overcome the problem at SMP Negeri 2 Muncar.From the results of writing test, it was known that the average before cycle 2 is 66.9 and after cycle 2 was done, the students average score was 77 in general, the score and the average of the writing score was improved, and the mean score could fulfill the target of the researcher that was 70 as minimum passing level at SMP Negeri 2 Muncar. It means that the action in cycle 2 was successful. Due to of the result of writing test in the cycle 2 had achieved the target mean score, so the action was stopped. Based on the discussion above, the result of the research could be claimed that the use of mind mapping can improve students ability in descriptive writing of the eighth year students at SMP Negeri 2 Muncar in the academic year 2012/2013.
