WEEK 1 ASSIGNMENTS NOTE: you will find the exercises for UNIT 1 (coursebook and workbook) on this site

1- MULTIPLE CHOICE READING. Read the text about Ellen MacArthur and choose the correct answer for questions 1-7 (pages 7,8,9). 2- MULTIPLE CHOICE LISTENING. Listen to the three extracts and choose the right right answers to questions on page 12. 3- Language focus: MODAL VERBS. Read the first section about modal verbs on page 10, and try to do exercise 3. Then, go to page 216 for revision (Grammar Reference).

IDIOMS AND EXTRA VOCABULARY


What are idioms and collocations? First, read about collocations and do the follow up activities provided on the BLOG: click here and for some more here. Then, go back to page 11 on your coursebook and do the exercises. Finally, there are some more Idioms about CHARACTER AND PERSONALITY on the blog.

PODCASTS
Watch or listen to at least three podcasts of your choice from the updated list displayed on the left side of the blog: http://readyforc1.blogspot.com/ : BBC , The Guardian, How Stuff Works OR any other piece of information you might find interesting. Remember that you will have to make a brief oral presentation or comment about one of the pieces in class during the next lesson (alternatively, you will be asked to share your spoken production in a recorded file).

VIDEO
There are some videos related to the lesson. It is strongly recommended to watch all of them, both for their cultural content and for their (in most cases) relaxed and funny tone. Enjoy them.

BLOG
As every week, you will have to post a comment related to any of the assignments for this week.

WRITING
Go to page 192-3 in your COURSEBOOK. Read the introduction about the different tasks and learn about the marking scheme. Then, consider some stages to follow when planning and checking your written work. Finally, do the exercise about REGISTER -a first approach to formal/informal English. You can also find more on REGISTER here. And these two links for more on informal writing and formal writing.

OPTIONAL ASSIGNMENT: Write a brief personal introduction of yourself mentioning the most relevant aspects of your personality.
