Q Explain the meaning of Education? Answer: The word education has a very wide connotation (meaning). It is like a diamond which appears to be different colour when seen from different angles. An artist, political leader, a psychologist, philosopher all have their own concept and meaning of education. Meaning Etymologically word education is derived from Latin words. i) Educare means to raise, to nourish to bring up ii) Educere means to draw out, to lead out iii) Educatum to train iv) Educo to lead out ( e out of , docu to lead) Thus the education means to raise, to nourish, to bring up, to draw out, to lead out and to train. So we can synthesize education as drawing out and leading out something from within the individual soul by bringing up, nourishing, raising and training him. Views of great thinkers about Education:

By education we mean the natural, harmonious and progressive development of mans inner power by drawing out the best in his body, mind and spirit. This will produce an individual who is culturally refined, emotionally stable, ethically sound, mentally alert, morally upright, physically strong, socially efficient, Spiritually enlightened, vocationally selfsufficient and internationally liberal. This should be the end product of education.

Q What are the Characteristics of Education?


1) Education is Purposive: There should be definite purpose underlined in all educational activities. 2) Education is deliberate: Education should involve Guidance and care. Or Education should be with careful guidance. 3) Education is planned: Education should be a systematic process. It does not just happens. 4) Education is for life: Education is from Tomb to Womb. 5) Education is influence Exerted: The mature, elders influences learner. 6) Education is a balanced development: Education means the allround development of learner means his mental, emotional, physical development and enhancement of his skills. 7) Education is Bi-polar process: Both the teacher and the pupil influences each other and the influence of it is prominent. 8) Education is Tripolar: Education involves the teacher, the student and the society they are the part of i.e. the environment.

9) Education is psychological as well as social: The endowment or the capacities of child, his needs, his interests etc. must be interpreted and developed in social settings. Education is growth: Education should modify the behaviour of the child in the most positive way. Process of Education: 1) A tripolar and multipolar process: i) Involving the interact of the personality of teacher and the learner in a social setting affects the behaviour of learner. ii) The teacher must thoroughly understand himself, his assets and limitations and act accordingly in educating the learner. iii) Teacher must present the social settings in a simplified and purified manner. iv) Teacher must involve the influence of environment subconsciously. Ex. Gandhi emphasized three aspect for educating young hearts and minds i.e. the student, the craft and the environment. Whereas Dewey emphasized society as source of curriculum and consider the teacher, the pupil and the curriculums an important component of education. 2) Education is a deliberate process: i)The process of education should not be only conscious but also deliberate process. ii) The teacher should be fully aware of the facts that his aim to develop the personality of the child along definite lines through modification of his behaviour. 3) Education is a sociological process: i) Teacher must develop and interpret the capacities of a child in a social settings.

ii) A child is a social being and he must be educated in such a way that he becomes a useful member of the society. 4) Education is a psychological process: i) According to the psychological aspect of the process the educator must understand the nature, interest, capacities and limitations of the child. 5) Education is a child centred process: i) The modern educators consider the child as the most important element of the teaching learning process. ii) The subject, matter, the teacher and the environment are all for him and not the other way around. iii) Teacher must study each child carefully and attain to his individual mental, physical, emotional needs. iv) The school curriculum and environment must provide for the childs total growth aesthetic creative, ethical, linguistic, manual, mathematical, physical, scientific, social and spiritual. 6) Education is a lifelong process: i) Education is a cradle to a grave process no longer concern in early years. ii) Every year, every month, every day, every minute, step by step a person learns. iii) No one knows about tomorrow, so a child must equip himself in every moment of his life to meet new challenges in life. iv) Education at all steps must be self-education. v) The tools of education should help the adult continue his education throughout his life. vi) All means like - libraries, the reading room, camps, tours, mass media, club, institutes etc. must be at his disposals.

vii) Lifelong education is acquired through formal, non-formal and informal means of education. Q Explain the Various functions of Education: Education is expected to perform the following function: i) Individual development function ii) Social development function Individual development functions: i) Maximum development of the natural abilities and powers of individuals. ii) Development of character and personality of the individuals. iii) Prepare individual for taking up employment / self- employment. iv) Development of suitable leisure time to pursuits. v) Development of leadership qualities Development of emotional stability and compatibility with others vi) Prepare individual to live his life happily and successfully. Socially development function: 1) Spread the understanding and importance of environment, ecosystem and also make them aware of protection of natural resources among all the childrens with the help of environmental education. 2) Development of community sense to make students an integral part of society. 3) Conservation of social heritage by providing suitable curriculum to the students. 4) Promotion of cultural heritage by broadening the outlook of students.

5) Involving students in community service and welfare actives can also build sense of belonging in them 6) Development of ideals and values of emotional integration and strong sense of Nationality. 7) Development of values of secularism, socialism and democracy.

Q Explain Scope of Education. Answer: Scope of education is vast as life itself. There is
no aspect or dimension of life which is not covered under education. In fact all education is life and all life is education. Education is a lifelong process and can be classified in its three forms. i) Formal Education School/ college education ii) Informal education Lifelong education which starts from Womb and ends at tomb. All the education in terms of values, principles. Behavioural modifications comes under this type of education. iii) Non-formal Education This is new kind of education which provides education as per the convenience of learner.
