Year of Faith
Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Doing What Is Necessary
Todays message is all about prayer; specifically about its indispensable nature. This brought to mind a poem I read years ago by an unknown author entitle, The Difference. I got up early one morning and rushed into the day; I had so much to accomplish, that I didnt take time to pray. Problems just tumbled around me, and heavier came each task; Why doesnt God help me? I wondered. He answered, You didnt ask. I wanted to see joy and beauty, but the day toiled on grey and bleak; I wondered why God didnt show me; He said, But you didnt seek. I tried to come into Gods presence; I used all my keys at the lock. God gently and lovingly chided, My child, you didnt knock. I woke up early this morning and paused before entering the day, I had so much to accomplish, that I HAD to take time to pray. Daily prayer is necessary. It can also be very difficult. For this reason the scriptures address the topic in the context of words like perseverance, battle, persistence, patience fight , a charge , etc. Sounds pretty serious! And that is the question: How serious do we take our relationship with God? No communication means no communion. No prayer means no relationship. Prayer is for the Christian what insulin is for the diabetic. The diabetic can choose not to take her insulin, but shes probably not going to survive the day very well! So, how are you surviving these days? Prayer is like your cell phone charger. You need to plug it in every day. You need to re -connect it to its power-source or after a while it wont be much good to you. Without prayer we arent much good to God or each other! When we see prayer as essential will fight for the time to do it. We will persist and insist on doing whatever it takes to keep our relationship with God alive, healthy, current, honest, and strong. So, the next time you find yourself, floundering, frustrated, worried, anxious and afraid, glance over at the cell phone charger that you depend on daily Then you will know what you must do to have the power you need to get through the day!
