Member Selection
Using the member forces calculated by the largest P-Delta anlysis of the structure, whose member sizes were established during the last design cycle. The program Staad will select new member sizes to satisfy the strength and serviceablility limit-states, choose the "Select" option from the LRFD Steel Design Menu. To have STAAD select new member sizes for the first step in the next cycle of the design process. The Select Menu will appear. To have the program select new sizes for all of the members in the structure, select the "All" option.
The Add Command to File Window will open. To confirm that all members should be resized by the program and to return to the LRFD Steel Design Menu, press the "Yes" button.

"Commands" heading in the Select Member Windows. To group the columns based on AX click on Members 1 and 3 in the graphic screen of the LRFD Steel Design Menu. Both members should be highlighted. Click the right mouse button to return to the Select Member Window. To confirm your choice and to return to the LRFD Steel Design Menu, press the "Return" button in the select Member Window. This member grouping procedure would be repeated if other members in a structure were to be grouped. .
From the LRFD Steel Design Menu, select the "Return" option to return to the Staad Pre Window. Top of the Page
Reanalyze Structure
Since the member sizes have been changed from those used in the previous design cycle, the member forces and structural displacements that are induced by the applied factoned-level loads will now be different from those calculated during the latest P-Delta structural analysis. The structure is staticaly indertiminable. Therefore, the next step in the design process is to reanalyze the structure with the new member sizes that have been chosen by STAAD and grouped as specified. From the Staad Pre Window, select the "Analysis" option. The Analysis Menu will appear. From the Analysis Menu, select the "P-Delta Analysis" option to require a second-order, elastic analysis of the structure.

The P-Delta Analysis Menu will open. The number of iteration of P-Delta analysis are required to establish convergence to a stable equilibrium condition of a displaced structure is not known until comparisons of joint displacements associated with successive analysis has been made. For this example, thee iterations will be assumed to be the number of successive P-Delta analyses that are required to produce displacement convergence for the structure. Therefore, type 3 in the box for the number of iterations. To suppress the calculation and printing of a static equilibrium check for a P-Delta analysis, select the "No Print" option by moving the cursor to the circle adjacent to that print option and click the left mouse button. A dot will be pluged in the circle. To confirm the P-Delta analysis requirements and to return to the Staad Pre Window, press the "Accept" button.

From the LRFD Steel Design Window, select the "Check Code" option to open the Select Member window. To check the strength limit states of all members in the structure press the "All" button that is located under the heading "Commands" in the Select Member Window. All of the members should be highlighted in the graphics screen of the LRFD Steel Design Window. Click on the right mouse button to confirm the member selection and to open the Add Command to File Window. Press the "Yes" option to confirm that all member strengths are to be checked and to return to the LRFD Steel Design Window.
The second cycle of design has been completed. Recall that a design cycle involves three steps: Member selection, P-Delta elastic analysis, and member strength limit-state check. Note that a verification of serviceability limit states would also be necessary for a complete design. This example problem does not address serviceability limit states. To perform another cycle of design, repeat the procedures discussed in this tutorial starting at the section Member Selection.

Note: Even though the program has gone through several design cycles, there is a chance that the final members chosen will not pass the code check and/or some members may be over designed. In this case, additional design cycles would be required.
