General Awareness 1) Tarapur Atomic Power Project, Unit 3 & 4 is the first 2x500 MWe capacity unit in India. This is located near the existing Tarapur Atomic Power station-1&2. 2) Self-sustained and controlled chain reaction of Natural Uranium, within the reactor core produces heat, which is used to generate light water steam at high pressure. 3) The pressurized steam drives the Turbo-Generator to produce electrical energy. 4) The reactors in TAPP-3&4 units are of indigenously developed and designed pressurized Heavy water Reactor type. 5) The project completion period for TAPP-4 is December 2004 and for TAPP-3 is April 2005. 6) Larsen & Toubro Limited, ECC Division, Electrical & Instrumentation Business unit is executing the Electrical Mega Package for TAPP-3&4. 7) Electrical Package includes Equipment erection, Switchyard civil works, Structural steel works, cable tray installation, cable laying, lighting works, cable sealing, etc., 8) Quality of work is very important in view of serious and long lasting consequences of an accident in nuclear power plants.

Introduction to Earthing 1) Earthing is provided in the plant area for the protection of personnel and equipment. 2) Earthing system consists of Main grid earthing Equipment earthing Lightning protection. 3) The main earthing grid in main plant buildings are embedded in concrete. 4) Earthing pads are provided flush with walls, floor and ceiling all over the plant area. 5) The equipments are connected to the earthing pads by earth leads. 6) In the transformer yard and switchyard, pigtails are provided from main earthing grid for connecting the equipments. Introduction to Trade (Fitter) 1) Fitter shall know the method of handling the materials, plant and machinery and tools and tackles required for Earthing. 2) Fitter shall also be capable to handle the materials and to do the job safely. Sequence of Operation 1) Measurement for conductor length to be taken at site 2) Select the conductor size as per the specification. (Refer Annexure6.1)

3) Cut lugs braze/crimp. 4) Clean the surface. 5) Provide correct bolt and nut and tight properly. Work Instructions 1) Earthing conductor between equipment and earth pad shall be short, direct and free from kinks and splices and sizes shall be as per NPCIL specifications. 2) Contact surface shall be free from scales, paint and rust. 3) 14SWG copper wire shall run outside the conduit & bonded at every 1000mm by using 26 gauge copper earth clip and earthed at minimum two points. 4) Street light poles and Junction Boxes to be earthed with 8SWG GS Wire. 5) Alternate main post of the switchyard and transformer yard fence and gates to be earthed with one lead. 6) Switchyard Fence Gates to be bonded by 35x6 GS flexible braid to the earthed post. 7) Small equipments like Lighting distribution boards, valves, receptacles, panels, junction boxes, exhaust fan and marshalling boxes shall be earthed by two earthing leads from same pad. 8) Generator, exciter and turbine shall be earthed by two leads. 9) Generator circuit breaker enclosure shall not be earthed since isolated phase bus duct shall be earthed at generator end only.

10) Flexible earthing leads shall be provided for earthing the equipments on moving platform. 11) For cable tray earthing 25x6 GS flat shall be run along the top tray and connect to main grid at minimum two points at 25mtr interval. 12) At every 2.5 mtr of the earthing strip running along the top tray, drop the 25x6 GI flat to connect other tiers of cable tray. 13) If the sizes of earthing conductors are equal or above 65.09 sq.mm, it shall be brazed to copper alloy offset bar lugs for earthing connections at both equipment and pad end. 14) If the sizes of the earthing conductors are less than 65.09 sq.mm, it shall be crimpable type lugs with one bolt for earthing. 15) Whenever earthing conductor is required to cross or run along metallic structures it shall be bonded to the same. 16) The connection between equipment earthing terminal and the earthing pads shall be made by short and direct earthing leads free from kinks and splices. Tools Required 1) Brazing torch 2) Oxygen acetylene cylinder with regulator 3) Cutting hose 4) Spanner set 5) 2T/3T Capacity cable drum jack with shaft 6) 15 mtr & 3 mtr measuring tap

7) 12 Hacksaw. Job Safety 1) Keep DA cylinder vertically while doing brazing joint 2) Use safety goggle while making brazed joint. 3) Use scuff holding /ladder while doing earth connection with ceiling pad and wall pad at height Dos 1) Do copper brazing and welding as per approved procedure. 2) Clean the contact surface before earthing. 3) Ensure bolted joints are fully tightened. 4) Select the conductor for earthing as per specification (Annexure-6.1). Dont 1) Dont make the earth connection on painted, rusted and dirty surface. Consequences of Mistakes 1) Improper earthing connection has to be rectified which leads to wastage of time and increase in cost. 2) Rework / Rectifying shall not yield adequate quality and finish. 3) Lack of confidence among workmen 4) Loss of Valuable time.

Cost of Bad Quality 1) Since the system is to ensure safety for Men, machine and material, bad quality will result in serious consequences. 2) Bad quality leads to customer dissatisfaction 3) Bad quality leads to rework which in turn results in Loss of valuable time Loss of valuable energy Increase in cost due to wastage of raw material, consumables. 4) Customer losses confidence 5) Uncomfortable working atmosphere due to frustration.
