Raghuram Rajan awarded with the Fifth Deutsche Bank Prize
Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan was awarded on 27th September 2013 with the 5th
Deutsche Bank Prize for Financial Economics 2013.They gave this award in recognition of his macro
economics research which influenced financial and macro-economic policies around the world. The
Deutsche Bank Prize in Financial Economic honors outstanding achievements in researching globally
relevant questions of financial economics and macroeconomics.
Indian-origin scientist Sunita Vohra gets top Canadian award Dr. Rogers Prize
Indian-origin scientist Sunita Vohra has been named recipient of a prestigious Canadian award Dr.
Rogers Prize that recognises excellence in complementary and alternative medicine. The carries the
largest cash prize ($250,000 ) of its kind in North America.The Prize is awarded every two years to
celebrate the achievements of researchers, practitioners and others in the field of complementary and
alternative medicine (CAM) healthcare. The award was initiated in 2007.
RBI appoints Committee on Comprehensive Financial Services for Small Businesses and Low-Income
Households
The Reserve Bank of India today announced appointment of a Committee on Comprehensive Financial
Services for Small Businesses and Low-Income Households under the Chairmanship of Nachiket Mor,
Member on the Central Board of Directors, Reserve Bank of India.
First Ever Allard Prize for International Integrity Presented to Anna Hazare
The University of British Columbias Faculty of Law presented Anna Hazare with the inaugural Allard
Prize for International Integrity at Vancouver, Canada. The Allard prize is one of the worlds largest
awards recognizing efforts to combat corruption and to promote human rights.
World Tourism Day: Govt launched the '777 days of Incredible Indian Himalayas' campaign
World Tourism Day observed on 27th September 2013. The theme for this year is Tourism and Water:
Protecting our Common Future. On this occasion Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi launched the '777 days
of Incredible Indian Himalayas' campaign in New Delhi to mark the World Tourism Day.
Indian Cinema returns to Egypt after 25 years
Indian Cinema returns to Egypt after a gap of 25 years. Indian embassy in Egypt is launching a project to
bring Indian cinematic wealth back to the theatres in Cairo and Alexandria. The return of Indian films to
Egyptian theaters also takes place as India celebrates 100 years of cinema. The first full length Indian
feature film, Dadasaheb Phalke's Raja Harishchandra, a 40 minute silent film on a righteous king, was

Sanjay Govind Dhande, former director of IIT Kanpur, on 25th September 2013 appointed as a member
of UGC for a term of three years. The Union Government on 18th September 2013 removed social
scientist Yogendra Yadav from the membership of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for joining
the Aam Admi Party.
Navneet Kaur Dhillon won the Multimedia Award at the Miss World 2013
Pond's Femina Miss India World 2013 Navneet Kaur Dhillon on 27th September 2013 won the
Multimedia Award at the Miss World 2013 in Bali, Indonesia. India won this award for the second time
in a row. The award was first introduced by the Miss World Organization in 2012 and India's Vanya
Mishra was its first winner.

Ravindra Kumar, Editor of The Statesman, was on 27

Sri Srinivasan sworn in as first Indian American judge of top US court
Sri Srinivasan was on 27

September 2013 sworn in as judge of the second most powerful court of the
U.S., making him the first Indian American to be on the bench of the US Courts of Appeal for the District
of Columbia Circuit. Mr. Srinivasan was previously the Principal Deputy Solicitor General of the United
States.
Citizens Have Right to Cast Negative Vote: Supreme Court of India
The Supreme Court of India on 27th September 2013 held that citizens have the right to reject all
candidates contesting an election. A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam while pronouncing the
judgment viewed that negative voting would foster purity and vibrancy of elections. The Supreme Court
also directed the Election Commission of India to provide none of the above options at the end of the
list of candidates contesting an election in a constituency. The bench noted that the concept of negative
voting is prevalent in 13 countries.
KC Ponnappa Took Over the Office as Chairman of Nilgiri Planters Association
KC Ponnappa, Group Manager, Kotada Estate took over as the Chairman of Nilgiri Planters Association
(NPA) for 2013-14 on 26th September 2013. The Nilgiri Planters Association (NPA) was formed in the
year 1891, which represents the organised plantation sector which covers a total of 6900 hectares area
spread over four Taluks of Nilgiris, namely Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri and Kundah.
