Ben. Alas that love, so gentle in his view,
Should be so t yrannous and rough in proof!
Rom. Alas that love, whose view is muffled still,

Where shall we dine? O me! What fray was here?
Yet tell me not, for I have heard it all.
Here 's much to do with ha te, but more with love.

Misshapen chaos of well -seeming forms!

Still-waking sleep, that is not what it is

Ben. No, coz, I rather weep.
Rom. Good heart, at what?
Ben. At thy good heart's oppressi on.
35 Rom. Why, such is love 's transgression.
What is it else? A madness most discreet,
A choking gall, and a preserving sweet.

Ben. Soft! I will go along.

Tell me in sadness, who is that you love?
Rom. Bid a sick man in sadness make his will.
Ah, word ill urg'd to one that is so ill!
In sadness, cousin, I do love a woman.

Rom. A right good markman! And she 's fair I love.
Ben. A ri ght fair mark, fair coz, is soo nest hit.
Rom. Well, in that hit you miss. She 'll not be hit
With Cupid's arrow. She hath Dian's wit,
And, in strong proof of chastit y well arm'd,

She will not stay the siege of loving ter ms,
Nor bide th' encounter of assailing e ye s,
Nor ope her lap to saint -seducing gold.
O, she 's rich in beauty; onl y poor

Ben. Then she hath sworn that she will still live chaste?
Rom. She hath, and in that sparing makes huge waste;
She is too fair, too wise, wisely too fair,
To merit bliss by making me despair.
15 She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow
Do I li ve dead that live to tell it now.
Ben. Be rul 'd by me : forget to think of her.
Rom. O, teach me how I should forget to think!
Ben. By gi ving libert y unto thine e yes.

Rom. 'Tis the wa y
To call hers (exquisite) in question more.
These happy masks that kiss fair ladies' brows,

The precious treasure of his eye sight lost.
Show me a mistress that is passing fair,
What doth her beauty serve but as a note
Where I ma y read wh o pass'd that passing fair?

Therefore do nimble -pinion'd doves draw Love,
And therefore hath the wind -swi ft Cupid wings.
Now is the sun upon the highmost hill
Of this da y's journe y, and from nine till twelve
40 Is three long hours; yet she is not come.
Had she affections and warm youthful blood,
She would be as swift in motion as a ball;
My words would bandy her to my sweet love,
And his to me,
But old folks, many feign as they were dead -
Unwieldy, slow, heavy and pale as lead.

He goeth down.
Jul. Art thou gone so, m y lord, m y love, m y friend?
I must hear from thee every da y in the hour,
For in a minute there are many da ys.
O, by this count I shall be much in years
Ere I again behold my Romeo!
Rom. Farewell!
I will omit no opportunity
5 That may conve y m y greetings, love, to thee.
Jul. O, think'st thou we shall ever meet again?
Rom. I doubt it not; and all these woes shall serve
For sweet discourses in our time to come.
Jul. O God, I have an ill -divining soul!
10 Methinks I see thee, now thou art below,
As one dead in the bottom of a tomb.
Either my e yesi ght fails, or thou look'st pale.
Rom. And trust me, love, in my e ye so do you.
Dry sorrow drinks our blood. Adieu, adieu!

Jul. O Fortune, Fortune ! all men call thee fickle.
If thou art fickle, what dost thou with him
That is renown'd for faith? Be fi ckle, Fortune,
For then I hope thou wilt not keep him long

Lady C. [within] Ho, daughter! a re you up?
Jul. Who is't that calls? It is m y l ady mother.

Nurse. The y call for dates and quinces in the pastry.
Enter three or four [Fellows, with spits and logs and baskets.

Samp. This is the place. There, where the torch doth burn.
Chief Watch. 'the ground is bloody. Search about the
churchyard. Go, some of you; whoe'er you find attach.
[Exeunt some of the Watch.]
Pitiful sight! here lies the County slain;
And Juliet bleeding, warm, and newl y dead,
5 Who here hath lain this two days buried.
Go, tell the Prince; run to the Capulets;
Raise up the Montagues; some others search.
[Exeunt others of the Watch.]
We see the ground whereon these woes do lie,
10 But the true ground of all these piteous woes
We cannot without circumstance descry.
