Key Points: 1. Jared Diamond argues that agriculture was a mistake and that humans were better off as hunter-gatherers. 2. The negative effects of agriculture include: a. Poorer nutrition b. Greater risk of starvation if crops fail c. Diseases spread more easily in permanent settlements d. A patriarchal social order came into existence 3. Diamond argues the hunter-gatherer lifestyle was better because modern day hunter-gatherers: a. Worked fewer hours b. Had better nutrition c. Avoided the social ills that plagued agricultural societies 4. Diamond ultimately argues that huntergatherers chose agriculture to increase their population at the expense of their quality of life.

Introduction to New Material (5 minutes)


TW instruct students to read the key ides (2 minutes). The goal of this time is for students to read and understand these key ideas to the point where they can summarize them to a partner without looking at their paper. TW instruct students to work with a partner and summarize the key ideas. (30 seconds for partner A to summarize, 30 seconds for partner A to summarize) TW ask students to respond to CFUs by holding up their fingers whole group (2 minutes)

Article Review (15 minutes) SW read excerpts from Jared Diamonds article and respond to the guiding questions. Class Discussion (13 minutes) Students will share their answers to question 4: Do you agree or disagree with Jared Diamonds thesis. Ss will respond by agreeing, disagreeing, or asking questions. Ss will keep track of who speaks and what they say.
