Title: Tutorial: How to Sew a Cosmetic Bag - with link to another TUTE !! Post by: queenofdiy on March 13, 2006 06:47:16 PM I am trying to work out what sort of cosmetic bags I should make for the school's mothers day stall. I was mucking around and came up with this one but it took me about an hour to make...and it's unlined!!!! Trouble is I want them to be quick to make but still look kinda classy. Anyone got any other ideas, apart from flat rectangle ones?? Or perhaps someone knows how to make these ones quicker?

Updated to add link to the other tutorial on the bag shown further down on this page: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=176509.0 (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=176509.0)

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag Post by: cyndiq on March 13, 2006 07:03:20 PM if you used the curtain fabric with the lining of rubber ie remnants would you need to line it? maybe just put a covered insert in the bottom. esp for a stall, they wont pay much. if you do line, just use calico or something cheap. it looks great. i want to make one. where did you find the pattern? any chance of a tutorial? only if you have time. i have made the square zipper pouches and than do squared off corners at the bottom, it sits nice and looks better. you could also do them with flaps or draw string. cheap calico recycle shopping totes with a little stencil sell well too. good luck cyndi

Post by: beautiful | BRUNETTE on March 14, 2006 02:15:58 PM I really like that one! Slap in a liner and call it done.

I'm trying to learn how to make things for myself since I'll be going to college this coming Fall so if you could put a tute of this it would be most appreciated.

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag Post by: brubendall on March 14, 2006 02:40:31 PM I think that is definitely classy. And an hour to make sounds about right. It would probably take me longer than that. ::) Sorry, I don't have any suggestions!

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag Post by: queenofdiy on March 14, 2006 04:48:15 PM Thanks all for your kind words. I would be more than happy to do a tute!! I have learnt so much from this site - it's time I gave back. Stay tuned!! As for the pattern, I took apart an old Red Earth cosmetic bag I had and made a "baby" from it. I will post the pattern when posting the tute. :D cyndiq: thanks for your suggestions. I did make my own pattern (after much thinking) with a square bottom but I didn't want the sides to stick out I wanted the sides to be straight up and down. This is what I came up with. If you wanna tute on this one, just say so. ;D These ones are much quicker. The dimensions are 7 x 4 x 2 1/2 inches

I only had to buy the fabric for the outside. I was given lots of fabric for lining and I have about 20 zippers (all in the blue colour). I am donating them to the stall, so I'm not too concerned about the price of the fabric - I should get quite a few from the 2 metres I bought.

Post by: ChloeisCrazy on March 14, 2006 05:47:32 PM Those are both great! I really love the blue zippers in them too!

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag Post by: Modus Operandi on March 14, 2006 05:53:59 PM Those are much too pretty to put makeup in!! I would have them stained in a couple days. I would more or less use them as purses instead.

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag Post by: cyndiq on March 14, 2006 06:48:58 PM hey fantastic job, yep thats how i do mine, the second one. what a great idea taking one apart, so obvious but i never thought to do it lol. op shops watch out lol I must find an old one to tear up. Your stall will be great, your purses or pouches, are beautiful, the colours have gone well, did you do the embroidery? I do machine embroidery on mine too. Love to see the tutorial. Goodluck getting your stall stuff done! thanks so much, cyndiq

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag **NOW WITH TUTORIAL!!** with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: queenofdiy on March 14, 2006 07:52:50 PM Here's the tutorial on the first cosmetic bag. Firstly cut out your pattern from the main fabric, interfacing (I used heavy iron on) and lining fabric (optional). As for the pattern, the pieces are as follows: One Two Two Two x x x x rectangle 25cm x 15.5cm with rounded corners rectangles 20cm x 3.5cm (these attach to the zipper) squares 7cm (side pieces) 6.5cm x 4cm (tabs)

1/4 inch seam allowances are included I didn't use interfacing on the two side pieces that attach to the zipper but that is just my preference.

Then iron your interfacing to your main fabric

Finish the edges on the two rectangles of fabric to go either side of the zipper

Then fold the finished edges to the wrong side

Then sew these side bits to the zipper, making sure that it is the same width as the two square side pieces (these are a 7cm square)

With zipper sewn in:

Fold raw edges of end tabs in then fold in half

Sew both long edges of the tabs

Sew the square side pieces to the zipper part, adding the tabs to the centre

Mark the centre of the square sides and the centre of the long end of the main body of the bag. Also, clip the seam allowances of the pieces that are attached to the zipper. This will allow you to ease around the corners.

Pin these marks together

Sew across the bottom of each side piece. Starting and stopping 1/4 inch in from each of the square pieces. Clip at each of the starting and ending points on the main bag to allow pivotting around the corner. Pin the main body to the sides, easing as you go then stitch in place.

Repeat for the other side making sure that your zipper is open to allow turning to right side.

Now add a lining in the same way but omitting the zipper and handstitch to the main bag. Otherwise, neaten the edges of the bag. Enjoy your new creation. Stay tuned for the next cosmetic bag tute!!! ;D ::) ;D

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag **NOW WITH TUTORIAL!!** with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: mei on March 15, 2006 12:27:37 AM holy moly that is awesome! I really need to get myself a sewing machine now xD Great tutorial! Thanks for writing it.

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag **NOW WITH TUTORIAL!!** with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: dejavugirl on March 16, 2006 06:53:07 AM Your tutorial is fantastic, thanks so much!! I made a cosmetic bag very similar to this using the Wild Ginger Wild Things! accessories computer patterns. It was actually listed as a gym bag but I put in tiny dimensions and it came out just like yours. But your tut is much easier to follow! Does anyone know how to "clean finish" the seams? That is what the Wild Things instructions say to do. I'm wondering if they mean to sew binding over all the raw edges. Their bag is not lined, so maybe if you doubled the fabric, with right sides out, then "clean finished" the seams, it would look nice inside and out without actually lining it separately. I'm not sure if I'm making sense, I can picture what I mean but not describe it!!

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag **NOW WITH TUTORIAL!!** with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: cyndiq on March 16, 2006 01:56:11 PM That sounds like a good idea using bias binding, you could use the ready made or make your own. Basically the seams face outside instead of inside and are covered by the bias binding to finish. maybe need to insert the zip piece first, using the zipper pouch tutorial technique, than use the bias binding on the main seam of bag where sides join the top section. I guess overlocking is another option as its not too bad on the inside. Another idea, could also use french seams where you fold it double on seam so raw edges hidden in seam. A bit tricky on a shaped item, but thats what they used in france etc on the high price items. Lets see what we all come up with. cyndi

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag **NOW WITH TUTORIAL!!** with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: Starwings20 on March 16, 2006 04:22:08 PM I love both bags, the second is so pretty, but I like the shape of the first one also. Maybe you could just sew the lining fabric to the outter fabric before you put the purse together. So the lining wouldn't be a seperate liner, just nice fabric inside. I don't know, if you still wanted to make the first one, might be faster. Just use thin interfacing (sp?) to stick together. Thats just what I used to do to make quick little bags. Thank you for the instructions though, they are great.

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag **NOW WITH TUTORIAL!!** with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: queenofdiy on March 17, 2006 11:50:08 PM Thanks Starwings20. Thank you for your kind words. I used iron on interfacing. I ended up just overlocking the raw edges and with the interfacing inside, it is kind of a lining. Dejavugirl: I think you might be right in the "clean finish" thing. I used an old cosmetic bag as a pattern, and when I pulled it apart, the seams had binding covering them. Cyndiq: your question about the embroidery, it is actually the fabric. I do have an embroidery machine also, but it would be too time consuming to embroider it onto the fabric - you know what i'm talking about ;D ;D I will work on a tutorial for the second bag. I PM'd the moderator and she suggested if it was a different type of cosmetic bag that I put it in a new thread, so keep an eye out!!

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag **NOW WITH TUTORIAL!!** with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: Babizzle on July 08, 2006 04:24:31 AM Mmmold thread haha. I tried out this tute a couple of times, the first it was umm.. "Different" (I blame the rubbish tension on my machine :P ) and the second I used interfacing and it again came out "different" (I blamed this on not curving the edges - I just used a rectangle)

See, the edges are... Dodgy to say the least. but that's what you get when you don't follow the tute or use decent fabric I guess ;) I'm not quite sure what you meant by "finish the edges" - I just sewed the zipper sides to the zipper right-sides together, same with the side squares, which gave a nice seam. I will also give it a go sewing in a lining (Must be easier to sew it in all at once, instead of seperately) Anywho, that's my (belated) two cents I guess. I'll shut up now, haha.

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag **NOW WITH TUTORIAL!!** with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: germie on July 09, 2006 05:52:00 PM Ooh i like the top rounded one the best, even if there is no lining. It's a makeup bag, right? Who cares about the inside?!

Well most makeup bags get horribly dirty inside! A wipeable lining would be more practical, otherwise the fabric might get spoilt.

I overlocked the edges (or you could zig zag) - just to stop the edges from fraying. ;)

The measurements are given in cm.. but if you convert it to inches it would be... One x rectangle 25cm x 15.5cm with rounded corners AKA 10 inches x 6 1/4 inches Two x rectangles 20cm x 3.5cm (these attach to the zipper) AKA 8 inches x 1 1/4 inches Two x squares 7cm (side pieces) AKA 2 3/4 inches Two x 6.5cm x 4cm (tabs) AKA 2 1/2 inches x 1 1/2 inches Hope that helps :)

I love it! My friend's birthday is coming up soon and I'm strapped for money. I MUST make that bag for her! If mine is anything close to the quality of yours, then she'll be exhilarated, since she's been begging me for a new pencil case. Thank you so much for your inspiration!

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag **NOW WITH TUTORIAL!!** with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: GeorgiaN on August 08, 2006 10:35:15 AM I really wish there were a way to sew the zipper on to the lining with the machine. I can't stand sewing by hand and have been trying to figure out how to do it by machine for a month now. It seems like you could easily do it, but I'm at a loss as to how. I know those people in sweatshops must know how... maybe we should kidnap one and bring him/her here to post :P I mean you can't really attach bias binding to it easily with a machine either, because it wouldn't cover all of the spots and crap out the closer you got to the end of the zipper part where it gets tucked under the "tabs." Ugh :( so hard.

Title: Re: Cosmetic Bag **NOW WITH TUTORIAL!!** with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: jennyleigh on August 08, 2006 08:41:12 PM queenofdiy, you did an amazing job on your cosmetic bags! They are way too pretty for make-up. You could add a wrist strap and use them for evening bags. So cute. About sewing the lining in by machine -- could you put the lining in just as if you were going to handstitch and then stitch carefully along the line of stitching on the zipper (or even use a decorative stitch or zigzag in a complementary color)? I haven't sat down at the machine and actually tried this, but in my feeble mind it seems as if it may work. Using a free-arm machine would make doing this much easier. Just a thought.

Title: Re: Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag - with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: lyra on January 01, 2007 01:55:28 PM (Pardon the rambling, first post...) So I'd been wanting to make this for a while, and finally I got to it, and...let me know what you think. It's my first attempt at actually sewing something (I did sew my mother a knitting-needle-case last year, though), and I definitely screwed up a lot. Also? I'm terrible at following directions. I mean, I follow them until I figure out where they're heading, and then, pfft. The fabric was stuff we had lying around: maroon with dots (I think the dots are actually beige-ish, but I pretended they were pink), and nice pink satiny stuff for the lining. The interfacing I got (who knew there were so many kinds? My goodness...) was double sided, so I just fused the lining on. Waaaay easier than doing that whole thing twice. I also forgot to put the tab on the far side (we happened to have ribbon that was a close enough color, so I did that instead of the fabric tabs...), but, meh. Good enough for a first go. I cannot actually put the pictures here, but here are links: The bag! Thank you! The pictures very kindly hide many of my mistakes... It took me maybe two hours, possibly more. The most annoying part was cutting everything out. And how I finished my seams...hmm, well, considering I'm not entirely sure what that would entail, I think my response has to be...I didn't. But if it's the kind of stitches, it was the zigzag one, because someone said somewhere that it should keep it from fraying.

LOVED it, great design, but I was a LEETLE put off by the lack of lining. I figured, heck, I could do it, and share my idea with the worrld. But... I never figured it out. :[ Then, just now, I saw your first page with the pic of your second bag and instantly fell in lovee. I just embroidered a really fabbity-fab robot design (if I do say so myself.) and that bag would be perfect for showcasing it! I was gonna make it into the first bag you showed but I don't think I placed the embroidery right so I'd have to piece other crap together to get the right size to make the body piece, blah blah blah. So, basically what I'm saying is that, if it's not a problem, could you MAAAYBE whip up a piping hot tute for us Craftsters? I know I'm not the only one who would enjoy it. Thanks so much for the first tute! D

Title: Re: Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag - with another TUTE TO COME!! Post by: susankg53 on April 06, 2007 09:13:29 PM this is a fantastic bag, much too nice to put makeup in. the tutorial is equally as good as the bag is and now I just need enough time to put it all together. If I'd stay off of craftster for a day or two I might just get something done, but I might miss something.

Title: Re: Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag - with link to another TUTE !! Post by: queenofdiy on June 13, 2007 08:59:58 PM I have finally managed to write the other tutorial for the triangular cosmetic bag. Here is the link (thanks for being patient!!): http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=176509.0 (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=176509.0)

Title: Re: Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag - with link to another TUTE !! Post by: chicomich on July 15, 2007 07:20:12 PM Thanks so much for this tutorial! This was the first "Craftster" project I tried, and I am so happy with how it came out. This first image was my practice bag, since I was pretty much guaranteed to screw it up. It turned out very nice, though, and I was bummed I just used an old sheet to make it! (The dollar is there to give you an idea of size, BTW).

I wanted the next one I made to be a bit longer, so I just added a couple of inches of length to it. It could hypothetically be a pencil case now. The lining even looks awesome, except for my amateurish slip-stitching.

Title: Re: Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag - with link to another TUTE !! Post by: landofoz on July 12, 2008 10:18:25 AM This bag is absolutely awesome! I am going to try it out today, thanks so much for the tute! Does anyone know, off hand, what the finished dimensions are? I need a wee-bag for some 4x4 cards, would they fit inside? This is a beautiful bag!

Title: Re: Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag - with link to another TUTE !! Post by: chicomich on July 12, 2008 12:25:28 PM My finished bag with unaltered dimensions was 5" long x 2" wide by ~3.5" tall. I cut a 4x4 card and tried to fit it in there; it isn't so good at the top. You could easily adjust the dimensions, though. Is is just for the cards? A more envelope-like bag might work well, too.

Title: Re: Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag - with link to another TUTE !! Post by: landofoz on July 12, 2008 01:33:55 PM Chicomich, thanks for the quick reply! I am making this bag to put inside a messenger bag (via D ring with a little clip/clasp thing) and it will primarily carry little arts n craft projects, and once a month or so, it will carry Girl Scout badges, which are mounted on 3.75x3.75 cards (I just measured them). I'll go ahead and make this up -- if I need to I'll just whack off an inch or so of each card!!

Title: Re: Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag - with link to another TUTE !! Post by: chicomich on July 12, 2008 02:49:51 PM Ah, ok. The 3.75 x 3.75 should fit (a little tightly) but the corners might get smooshed if you don't trim them. Should work just fine for what you need. Good luck!

Title: Re: Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag - with link to another TUTE !! Post by: landofoz on July 12, 2008 07:04:27 PM Despite my families attempts to distract me (I'm hungry, where is my..., she hit me!, etc) I was able to finish this up this evening! The tut was wonderfully photographed and the sewing went quickly and easily. Normally I would have matched the zipper better but all I had was a blue one! At least the liner sorta matches the zip. Thanks for the help, Chicomich and thanks for the tut Queenofdiy!!

Title: Re: Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag - with link to another TUTE !! Post by: chicomich on July 12, 2008 08:51:57 PM Congratulations, it looks awesome. Elegant on the outside, and funky on the inside! And you even remembered to put the clip on! I always forget that kind of thing until I am finished, >.> Do your cards fit?

Title: Re: Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag - with link to another TUTE !! Post by: landofoz on July 12, 2008 10:38:40 PM Thanks, I'm glad you like it! I don't know why I remembered the clip, that is

usually the first thing that I forget. lol And, yes, my cards do fit in there, it is a bit snug at the top, but if I set them in there at an angle it works great!! edit: oh and after I assembled both the liner and the outside, I sewed the bottom corners of the liner and outside together being careful not to sew over the exsisting seams. So, hopefully, the liner doesn't float around. It's really irritating when the liner moves around as I'm searching for something!!

You are a saint. Thank you so much for the tutorial! My roommates and I have been complaining about not being able to find makeup bags large enough for our stuff (apparently we're all really ugly). This is a great shape and too perfect.
