From the Pastor

Pam and I returned from Sabbatical the first week of August after over a month away. Thank you so much for your generosity in allowing us this time away. Its awkward for any congregation to have their pastor out of the pulpit for several weeks in a row, but I know you were well cared for by our staff and guest preachers during my absence. What did I do during these weeks? First, I worshipped in a variety of churches in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia, some with different backgrounds and traditions from ours. One Sunday, I attended a Presbyterian church; another, an Independent Anglican Church; another, a large Church of God; then, on several other occasions, Baptist churches similar to ours. It was so refreshing to see so many great churches, experience such great worship and hear such great preaching. I was inspired by it all.

Second, I was able to spend a considerable amount of time in personal Bible study and prayer. I cant tell you what a gift it is to be relieved of all the duties of pastoring (even though I love what I do!) so that I could simply be still before the Lord for an extended period of time. And, as I shared with you through the Sundays of August, I felt that the Lord gave me new revelation through this time about our churchs direction. I feel refreshed and re-invigorated in mind, body and spirit and eagerly await the next season of ministry the Lord has for us here at LBC. September begins with one of the great events our church family enjoys each year: Tailgate Sunday. On September 1, well meet in only one worship service at 10:15 am in the Worship Center for a special experience of worship that brings together all four of our regular worship services. Following the service, we will serve barbecue for the whole church family. Our Sunday School classes will eat together, a great opportunity to get to know one another better. But if youre not in a Sunday School class, dont worry! Youll have a special place to enjoy your meal, too. I hope youll make plans to join us. Also in September, on Wednesday, September 4, well begin our regular fall schedule. This year were adding something new and different. In addition to all of our regular, exciting events and activities, were adding a second hour for my midweek Bible study. It will work like this: the first session of the Pastors Bible study will be at 4 pm in the chapel. Family night supper will follow from 4:45 to 6 pm. Then, at 6:15, Ill teach the second session in the chapel. Both sessions will be exactly the same. For those of you who prefer the earlier hour, you can attend the midweek service at 4, eat dinner and go home. The rest of you may eat dinner first, attend the 6:15 study and return home at 7 pm. The reason were doing it this way is because the attendance through last Winter and Spring for the midweek service filled the chapel to capacity. This way, we can accommodate more people in the service. Wednesday night church is an opportunity to expand our churchs ministry in some new and far-reaching ways, so I hope each of you will plan on being here. We also have classes and events for all ages. It would be great if youd also bring someone with youIll be teaching on a variety of topics with special application toward practical Christian living. Finally, as we move into the fall months, lets not forget the priority of giving. As we honor the Lord with our finances, He promises to bless us in more ways than we know. Our church ministries impact people in Lexington and around the world because you continue to faithfully and generously give.

Music on Mission
In the last Signal, you read about LBC Orchestra member David Crone and the donation by the orchestra of three violas and a cello to a ministry in Brazil! After that trip, two choir members, John OCain and Bob Gunter, went to Nicaragua in July with the team from LBC headed up by Chuck McCurry. This group conducted Vacation Bible School and did construction work with the H3C School (Helping Hands & Hearts for Christ) for the deaf and disabled on the island of Ometepe as well as the Lluvia de Gracia (Rain of Grace) church. At the Lluvia de Gracia church, they donated a new Ibanez bass guitar to the churchs music ministry. This gift was made possible in part by the LBC Choir and the Scott Fisher Orchestra Fund. Pictured above is Chuck McCurry presenting the bass to the pastors son, Jose Cordova. Just one more way we are touching lives all over the world!

Congratulations!
Congratulations to LBC Member Leonard Chapman (pictured above) and to the Grays basketball team, winners of the National Senior Basketball Tournament. This 50+ mens team beat out 26 other teams from across the country to win this honor! The Grays team members are Dean Fickbohm, Jack Sayers, Charles Shealy, Franke Shipley, Otis Dickerson, Leonard Chapman, and Dr. Hank Martin.

An Incredible Summer
Dear Student Ministry Families, What an incredible summer we just experienced. We witnessed students coming to the Lord for salvation and students committing to full-time missions. We saw God unify this ministry like never before. We are on the starting line of true life change. More students than ever are committing themselves to leadership opportunities here at LBC. I truly believe God is about to do an amazing work in and through these students. With that being said, we have a huge announcement to make! On Wednesday, Sept. 4, the Student Ministry is launching Encounter431. Based on Acts 4:31, we are starting a movement on Wednesday nights for all of our students in grades 6-12. We will meet in The City from 6 to 7:30 pm to experience powerful worship, engaging teaching and life-changing small groups. Apex and Turning Point will no longer exist as they were. God is unifying this ministry and we desire for your student to jump in this fall. On one Thursday a month, Girls Inc. and ManUp will host a Bible study at a host home. Starting in September, we are looking at Godly men and women of the Bible. Look for our Fall 2013 Student Ministry newsletter, which will have all the dates and times for these studies. If you or your student want to get involved this Fall but dont know the next step, please contact me by email at Ian@LexingtonBaptist.org. That Was All They Needed

After returning from our mission trip to Nicaragua, I have spent time reflecting on everything that we experienced while there. Since we were a team made up of middle school aged kids and their parent(s), we were fortunate to experience it all as a family. Our middle schoolers loved playing kickball and whiffle ball with all of the kids! We spent time doing activities with children at a local Christian school for the deaf, as well as planning and then having a VBS for the kids in the community at a local church. We were also able to help out by pouring concrete and building a concrete wall at the Helping Hands with Hearts for Christ (H3C) School for the Deaf. I think one of the most memorable times for all of us was attending a local church on Sunday morning that was made up of only cinderblock walls. We were all blown away by how empty we thought the church was. There were no doors or windows. There wasnt even a pulpit! Yet, there was this overwhelming feeling of God! The church was full of Him and that was all they needed! I have realized that by taking a leap of faith and going on this trip to spread His story, I was blessed with so much more than I could have prepared myself for. We can all get caught up with feeling as though we just need more. In all reality, we should all just be satisfied with God.

I encourage everyone to take part in missions with LBC! ~ Justin and Brittany Matthews

SERVES!
Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. (1 Timothy 6:18) And I pray that you . . . be able to grasp how wide and deep and long and high is the love of Christand to know for yourselves that love so far beyond our comprehension. (Ephesians 3:18)
Dear LBC Families, We want our kids and their families to understand that they are a part of a much bigger story. God is choosing to show every person just how much He loves them, and He is using us to do it! This year, we are challenging our families to do more, love more, give more and share more all in the name of Jesus! Kids need to have opportunities to tangibly live out their faith. For this reason, we will provide hands-on opportunities for families to serve and share together in our church, community, state, nation and world. It is our prayer that they will be challenged and stretched to see the world through a different lens. We pray that they will begin recognizing the needs of others around them. Each month, we will highlight one area of need and ways that you can participate as a family. Look out for ways that you can get involved! His Plan is Perfect

For we are Gods masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:10) In MOPS this year, we are focusing on building relationships around our messes. How do we turn our messiness into beauty? How do we embrace our life as it is and not focus on what we think it should be? We are Gods masterpiece... He knows what we look like with unwashed hair and that we have crunched up Cheerios under couch cushions, dirty diapers in the bathroom, children eating old raisins off the floors (I hope that was a raisin), clean clothes that never make their way back into the drawers and so many other messy things that we try to quickly clean up when company arrives. He knows it all and still wants the good that He planned for us. Our theme throughout the year is A Beautiful Mess: Embrace Your Story. We will focus on revealing His plan for our lives, being real with others about the messes we live in and sharing in this stage of life as mothers. Please join us for our first MOPS meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 7 to 9 pm in the LBC Fellowship Hall. To find out more or to register, visit www.LexingtonBaptist.org/MOPS. On July 26, 2012, Gordon was born. Our two year old Max was so excited to have a new baby brother. Gordon was a month premature, weighing 6 pounds 7 ounces, but we were thrilled when the doctors sent us home after spending just two days in the hospital. On July 19, 2013, our world turned upside down when Gordon was diagnosed with three very serious life-threatening heart defects, Tetralogy of Fallot, Pulmonary Atresia and Major Aorta Pulmonary Collateral Arteries. His heart is enlarged, with a quarter-sized hole between the left and right ventricles, no functional use of his deformed pulmonary artery and no pulmonary valve. He has three angel hair pasta-size arteries supplying minimal blood to his lungs with pulse/ox levels in the 50% - 60% range...normal is 95% to 98%. Gordon became ill that Friday afternoon in July and we knew something was terribly wrong. We rushed him to Lexington Medical Centers Urgent Care, and then, to Richlands Childrens Hospital ICU, and finally, we were transported to MUSC, all in less than 24 hours. Gordon spent a long week in the Pediatric Cardiac ICU where several tests and procedures confirmed our worst fears. The team of cardiac doctors at MUSC were stunned to see a one year old with these undetected heart defects. The combination is very rare, occurring in roughly one in 20,000 babies. Dr. Frank Hanley at the Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital in Palo Alto, California, pioneered the surgery in 1990 which is necessary to sustain his life. Our immediate plans are to travel to Stanford University where Gordons surgery will be performed in the next two weeks if all goes as planned. The Lord has challenged us in so many ways as we endure this process. Since the very beginning, we have relied solely on our faith and trust in the Lord. Our heavenly Father is in complete control and His plan is perfect. The peace we are experiencing surpasses all understanding. It is our prayer that this tribulation will bring honor and glory to Him and our faith will be strengthened beyond measure. Thanks to the wonderful folks at Wells Fargo for setting up the Gordon Owino Fund to help us with medical costs, airfare, lodging, meals, car rental and gas. We live day-to-day, like most folks on a strict budget, relying solely on Arnolds income to support our family. We are estimating our time away from home to be almost two months, creating serious financial hardship. If you would like to help us, please visit www.caringbridge.org/visit/gordonowino and learn how you can make a difference. We will be updating our journey frequently on Caring Bridge and ask that you pray for Gordon and our family. There arent words to express our deep gratitude and appreciation for your love, support and prayers. Love in Christ, Arnold, Hayley, Max and Gordon Owino To donate to the Owino family, please visit their YouCaring site at http://www.youcaring.com/bg or visit a local branch of Wells Fargo.

Happy Anniversary
Congratulations to Sylvia Cartin for completing her tenth year of service in the church office. Without having done a formal survey, I believe that most Christians would say that a prodigal is a wayward child, a child who once a made a profession of faith, but is living a lifestyle not pleasing to God. This familiar definition is in the story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:1132). However, a prodigal can be anyone we know who has gone astray... spouses, siblings, parents, grandchildren... anyone in your life who needs prayer to return to full fellowship with the Lord. We have a group that meets here at LBC called Praying for Prodigals. We meet every Sunday afternoon at 4 pm in Room 402 in the Adult Education Building. Having the prayer support of other believers is so encouraging. If there is a prodigal in your life, we encourage you to pray with us. As God promised the children of Israel, so He promises us: And there is hope for your future, declares the Lord. And your children shall return to their land. (Jeremiah 31:17) ~ Cindy Prather

Impacting the Community

at Lexington Interfaith Community Services Throughout the Bible, God implores His people to provide for the less fortunate and those who are hungry. God said, If you offer yourself to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted one, then your light will shine in the darkness. Isaiah 58:10 In February, 2012, the Tim Ivey Sunday School Class prayerfully committed to shop monthly for the food pantry at LICS (Lexington Interfaith Community Services) as their ministry to the community. The class has thus far donated over 1,268 pounds of food to help address the ongoing and critical food shortage at LICS. This ministry has definitely helped each member of our Sunday School Class to realize their blessings of abundance given to them daily. One Sunday School Class member remembered the time that Jesus said that when we reach out to help the least of them, we were helping Him. Another class member was very thankful for the opportunity to partner with other churches in the Lexington area to minister to the vast needs of the many children and adults who otherwise might not have daily food. The members of the Tim Ivey Sunday School Class truly believe that following Jesus always means serving our neighbors in crisis that are less fortunate. ~ Kay Bedenbaugh Mission Connector Tim Ivey Sunday School Class

Help & Hope for Women

My involvement with the Daybreak Crisis Pregnancy Center ministry began as a result of my mothers dedication to Daybreak as a hotline volunteer in the 1990s. Over the years I have served in numerous capacities and have been both challenged and blessed by the experience. Today, I lead a No Apologies, No Regrets Girls Club that meets at LBC in the Family Life Center on Monday afternoons. The curriculum is abstinence and Bible-based and is designed specifically for middle and high school girls. Kimberly Poovey, Daybreaks Youth Program Coordinator, has worked hard to grow this ministry from one club in Pelion to fourteen in just a few short years. There is no doubt in our minds these clubs are much needed in todays society, and many of them are located on public school campuses. There are so many ways you can serve and use your gifts and talents. Give Daybreak a call at 771-6634 (the Columbia office) or at 808-0778 (the Lexington office) and someone will be happy to talk with you. Youll be blessed and a blessing to others. The opportunities to touch lives at Daybreak are numerous and varied and much needed. Daybreak Crisis Pregnancy Center provides the following: 24-Hour Hotline Counseling Pregnancy Testing Onsite One-On-One Counseling Ultrasounds Adoption Referrals Childbirth/Parenting Classes Maternity Clothing Post-Abortion Support Group Dating and Relationship Guidance Youth Programs such as No Apologies, No Regrets College Campus Outreach Mens Mentoring

Every woman who comes to Daybreak for a pregnancy test begins with a counseling session in which the gospel is shared and an opportunity to make a profession of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ is given. Call today to find out where you can use your gifts and talents to provide help and hope to women and young girls right here in Lexington. ~ Karen Parrish Daybreak Youth Ministry Volunteer

StreetSide Ministry
Organized and Led by Christopher Bolding My involvement with StreetSide Ministry began approximately one year ago after hearing two Sunday School classmates, Cal and Evelyn Yngve, talk about homeless people they were encountering on the streets of Columbia. The ministry was of particular interest because it addressed both physical and spiritual needs of the old, the young, all races, male and female, addicts, professionals, ex-convicts and yes, those that were once considered the middle class. I later learned that one of the homeless they had encountered came from an extremely wealthy family. Some are on the streets by choice or because of bad decisions; however, some are there because no other options are available to them. I am reminded of an individual that worked for a Columbia textile company for thirty-eight years. Unfortunately, the plant closed leaving this poor man without a job. He wasnt old enough to qualify for Social Security, but apparently, he was too old for others to hire him. Therefore, the streets became his home. Involvement with this ministry also provides an opportunity to witness the work of the Holy Spirit in the world. My primary goal is to tell the unsaved about Jesus; but, I also have an immense desire to assist them in finding work. I met an ex-convict who was searching for employment; however, all personal identification had been lost and his requests for duplicate copies were repeatedly denied because his prison photo ID was more than forty-five days old. After several of my futile attempts to assist this person, the Lord took charge. On the very next try, it became evident that God had At StreetSide, building relationships is a key strategically placed three employees to building trust and sharing His good news. in the office of Vital Records, and One of our friends, a self taught street artist within the next ninety minutes, this known as Two Peace, gave us a couple of person had obtained a copy of his his sketches in appreciation for a good meal. birth certificate, a SC photo ID and a new Social Security card was in route to him. Most homeless individuals claim a personal, born-again relationship with the Lord; however, conversations with them reveal that many are confused or have been influenced by the witness of world religions. The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Come and join us! ~ Ed Meek

Lets Fill the Food Bins!

During the school year, for many children, food provided at school is their main source of nutrition. During the summer months, those same children rely on a Local Food Bank for their meals, leaving such banks in short supply. Though the need increases during summer, it is an ever-increasing problem throughout the year. At this time, donations are needed more than ever! Can you share one can per person per month? Food bins are located in Sunday School classrooms and throughout the church campus.

StreetSide Ministry volunteers meet every Monday night at 5:30 pm at The Church of the Apostles at 1520 Bull Street at the corner of Hampton Street in Columbia. There are eight to ten LBC regulars who help as often as possible. Recently, the numbers being fed have grown to about 100+ each week. Two LBC Sunday School classes have each accepted the cooking responsibilities for one Monday each month. Other Mondays are being covered by other local churches and Church of the Apostles have opened their facilities for storage and some food prep.

The Spotlight
A Focused Look Into Sunday School Ministry

Looking Forward
to More Opportunities
The small group that Im involved in on Wednesday nights was given the opportunity to work at Samaritans Well, a Lexington womens shelter. Led by Christopher Bolding and Will Coker, we painted several bedrooms at the shelter and made them move-in ready. I really enjoyed this experience and it was very rewarding because we were able to work as a team and become closer as a small group while ministering to the ladies at Samaritans Well. This is the first missions opportunity I have taken part in while being a member of LBC. After participating in this project, I realize now how gratifying it is and look forward to future opportunities. ~ by Matt Rivenbark

Student Spotlight: Meet Alex Davis

Hi, my name is Alex Davis. This fall I will be a freshman at Lexington High School. I have been going to LBC almost all my life. I grew up in the Childrens Ministry and now am proud to be part of our Student Ministry. Before this summer, I considered myself a Christian. I prayed and went to church on Sundays and Wednesdays. However, I always felt empty. I was never fulfilled. This summer changed my life forever. Our youth group took a trip to Toccoa Falls, Georgia. I learned that if you want to be a true Christian and want to forever serve Him, you have to be all in. God does not offer a part-time ministry. I realized that my life was not in full-time ministry and that I was ignoring a lot of opportunities to serve the Kingdom of God. God gives you the words to say, the place to say them and the people to say them to. It is our job to take that first step and start the conversation. This summer, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend a weekly Bible study just for guys, led by our summer intern. The most important thing I will take away from that study is God is so much bigger than any of our problems and that the only way that I can grow closer to God is by reading the Bible and applying it to my life. I am excited to see what God has planned for my life, especially in these next four years in high school. I do not know where He is going to take me but I am all in. I am also excited to see what God is going to do for and through our Student Ministry. Our Student Ministry is going to change the world, starting with Lexington, SC.
