This document provides details for a term end examination for a steel structures design course. It includes 16 questions split into two parts. Part A contains 10 short answer questions worth 2 marks each on various topics related to steel design. Part B contains 4 long answer questions worth 20 marks each requiring students to provide designs for different steel structures, including beams, plate girders, roof trusses, water tanks, and foundations. The document specifies the duration of the exam, maximum marks, and references permitted.

PART A (10 X 2 = 20 Marks) Answer ALL Questions 1. What are requirements that govern the structural design?
2. List out the different types of beams based on the end conditions.
3. Define the terms laterally restrained and laterally unrestrained beam.
4. Write the components of a plate girder.
5. Define stiffener. Write the application of bearing stiffener in girder.
6. Draw the steel roof truss and mark the components of the roof truss.
7. Write the formula for calculating the economical spacing of roof truss.
8. Mention the types of loads to be considered in the design of steel water tank.
9. Specify the thickness of the steel plates according to the depth and corresponding location of the plate.
10. Define Gantry Girder and write the application of gantry girder in steel construction.
PART B (4 X 20 = 80 Marks) Answer any FOUR Questions
11. A hall measuring 9m X 24m from inside is provided with reinforced concrete slab resting on secondary beam spaced at 3m c/c. The secondary beams are connected to the web of main beams spaced 6m c/c. Design the main and secondary beams, taking a live load of 3 kN/m 2 . The thickness of roofing inclusive of slab is 200 mm.
12. Design a rolled steel I-section for a simply supported beam with a clear span of 7m. It carries a uniformly distributed load of 50 kN/m exclusive of self weight of the girder. The beam is laterally unsupported.
Page 2 of 2 13. Design a maximum section of a plate girder for a bridge, for a live load of 50 kN/m, longer than the span, and a dead load of 40 kN/m. The girder is simply supported over an effective span of 12m.
14. Design a roof truss for a factory building for a span of 20m and a pitch of 1/5. The height of the truss at eves level is 10m. The spacing of the truss is 4.5m. The factory building which is 36m long is situated at Delhi. Take fy = 250 N/mm 2 for a steel sections. Provide Fink truss.
15. Design an elevated rectangular pressed steel tank having a capacity of 120000 liters. The tank is open on the top. The height of staging is 12m upto the top of the column.
16. Design a grillage foundation for a compound column consisting of ISHB 400@ 82.2 kg/m with flange plates 350mm x 20mm one on each flange, and carrying on load of 3000 kN. The base plate has size 800mm x 900 mm. The grillage is supported on soil having bearing capacity of 200 kN/m 2 . Draw the details of foundation.
