(a) Find the kinetic energy stored in the flywheel?

A car is designed to get its energy from a rotating flywheel (solid disk) with a radius of 1.00 m and a mass of 400 kg. Before a trip, the flywheel is attached to an electric motor, which brings the flywheel's rotational speed up to 5500 rev/min. (a) Find the kinetic energy stored in the flywheel. J (b) If the flywheel is to supply energy to the car as would a 15.0-hp motor, find the length of time the car could run before the flywheel would have to be brought back up to speed.

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters E = 0.5 I w^2, where I = mr^2 => moment of inertia w = angular velocity Jacy I = 400 (1)^2 = 400 kg m^2 w = 5500(2pi/60) = 576 radians E = 0.5(400)576^2 = 66.355MJ b) Power = Energy / time => t = E/P 1 hp = 746W = 746 J/s t = 66.355x10^6/(746x15)/3600 = 1.65 hrs. Hth
