Introduction

This manual is intended to be a supplement to the book, The JKD Lead Punch: 101
Ways to Mastery by Kip Brockett.

The directions within are not to be intended as a step-by-step guide of how to build the
different pieces of equipment. The main purpose is to give you a general outline of
possible methods. Use your own imagination and building skills. You can probably do a
better job than what I have done!

Play around with different constructions and materials as well. Also, try to come up with
your own pieces of training equipment, but always think safety so as to reduce the
possibility of injury.

Paper Target

Materials Needed:

Eye Bolt
Mid-Weight Clamp
8 x 11 Sheet of Card Stock Paper
Mid-Weight Chain
Hook Clasp
O Ring

You can make a very simple Paper Target with a piece of paper and a string.

There are other variations you can use also, such as:

Newspaper over a rope extended from 2 points.
Towel hung over a rope.
Paper wedged in a closed door.
X-ray sheet or plastic sheet instead of paper.
Foam pad.

Im sure there are many others that you can think of, so use your imagination.

Ive used many variations throughout the years, but I will describe my latest version. I like
it the most so far because it weighs enough to give resistance but not too much so that it
doesnt move at all when struck.

Its also easy to change the height and to change to other equipment when working out.

First, mount an eye bolt in the ceiling. Depending on the height of your ceiling, the length
of chain should allow you to extend the target low enough to work on low kicks.

I just keep doubling the length of the chain to get it to a head height target.

Youll need some sort of a hook clasp to attach the whole thing to the eye bolt. The
opposite end of this clasp must be attached to one end of the chain.

You should get an O ring clasp that can be purchased from any office supply store. Feed
the open ring through the spring of the Mid-Weight Clamp.

Now attach the clamp to the chain by feeding the open O ring through the links in the
chain. Adjust it to the correct height and close the O ring.

The Mid-Weight Clamp that I use is similar to the clamps used on a cheap pair of car
battery booster cables. The difference is that it has no teeth. The ends and the clamp part
are covered with a soft plastic. It gives it a very good grip on the paper. You should be
able to find something similar in most hardware stores.

You can use any type of paper that you wish. I like to use card stock paper because it
gives a little stiffer resistance and doesnt rip as easily as regular paper. It gives a nice
pop when struck, too. I like to use a piece of foam, such as egg-foam as a variation to
the paper.

Thats about it. I hope this helps.

Top and Bottom Bag

I saw this in a martial arts magazine and always thought it was a great idea. I believe it
was from Mike Youngs series of columns about home training that I originally saw this
in.

First of all, let me say that if you can afford it, buy a good bag. Ringside has very good
equipment as well as Everlast. There are many other companies that build them, too.

If you have to, or just want to make your own, this is a neat way to do it.

Materials Needed:

Pillow Case
Ball
2 Bunge Cords (or at least elastic cords)
Eye Bolt
Weights
Duct Tape

Youll need a ball, such as one of those you find at any childrens store.

Put it in the pillow case and twist both ends so that its tight around the ball.

Loop each end of the pillow case and duct tape leaving an open loop on each end. Feed
the bunge cords (or elastic cords) through these holes.

WARNING: Make sure to secure both ends very well so that the cords and the ball
cannot come loose. The last thing you need is an elastic cord with a metal end flying
loose, so I cant stress this enough!

Secure the top end to your eye bolt and the bottom to standard barbell weights. I use 50-
lbs or more, but youll be able to tell by the sway if you need more. You can also secure
the bottom end to a strong stationary object, if you have one. Make sure it doesnt stick
up too far, because it will get in the way and can cause a tripping hazard.

Speed Bag

It may be about as cheap to buy this one from a manufacturer than it is to try to construct
it on your own.

If you are good with woodworking, though, you could possibly make a very nice
platform.

Youll need all the materials that come with a standard Speed Bag.

Platform
Speed Bag
Swivel
Mounting Equipment

Another thing to keep in mind is if you want it to be adjustable. Most Speed Bags
mounted in gyms are adjustable due to the various sizes of individuals working out on
them. If this is strictly for personal use, then this may not be an issue.

If you decide to make your own, make sure to sand the platform to a very fine finish.
Varnishing the surface is something you should consider as well. A rough platform will
wear the bag quickly.

Buy a professional swivel. Stay away from the cheap ball and socket swivel with the hook
that holds the bag. The only thing holding this hook inside the ball is a nut and these things
eventually work loose and the bag goes flying across the room!

Purchase either a chain swivel or one of the more top-of-the-line ones. Any good boxing
equipment manufacturer will have an assortment of these with varying prices.

Bottom line... buy a Speed Bag unless you know what youre doing.

Slip Bag

I just wanted to throw this one in here because its easy to build.

Using the same eye bolt that you have mounted, take a fairly heavy chain and attach one
end to the bolt. You can use the O ring as mentioned in the Paper Target. Get a small,
fairly heavy plastic bag and fill it with sand or lead shot and attach it to the other end of
the chain.

Important: Make sure the bag is smooth and round. You dont want any jagged or
sharp corners of any kind. This could cause injury to your face or eyes when
slipping the bag.

Simply swing the bag away from you and work slipping your head from side to side as the
bag swings toward you. If youve ever seen old footage of Mike Tyson working out in the
gym, this is the type of device he used to work his head movement.

You can also buy one of these from boxing equipment manufacturers. I have one from
Ringside.

PVC Dummy

I wont go into the details of pipe length, exact pieces needed, sealant, etc. because that
could be a whole manual in itself.

So let me give you a general outline of mine so that you can build your own according to
your own preferences.

For a base, I used a 5-gallon bucket and filled it with ready-mix concrete. All you have to
do is add water. You can get this at your local hardware store.

I cut a base section of 4-inch PVC pipe and stuck it in the wet concrete. Let it set for a
day or so to dry and set. This base section should be somewhere around leg height
because the section coming from it will be the leg of the dummy.

Youll need a joint or coupler to attach a 2-inch pipe coming down at an angle for the leg.
The base will continue upwards with a 4-inch pipe.

I also added a knee joint to mine. Its just another 2-inch joint/coupler that will bring the
pipe to the floor.

Youll need another section of 4-inch pipe to continue your base above the leg.

Depending on how many arms you want, youll need 1 or 2 more joints/couplers that will
extend 2-inch pipe. The problem I found was that the size of the joints/couplers made the
arms a little too far apart. You could make one lower and one higher if you want. Or put 3
arms on it. Its up to your preference.

After you make the arm sections, add more 4-inch pipe to extend the base for a head
section.

I padded mine up with egg foam and duct tape around the head, midsection, arms, and leg.
I also padded key spots on the base for targets.

One Word of Caution: You cant hit and kick this dummy with full force. Not with this
base. If you build a wider base, though, it will impede your footwork. This dummy can be
a real asset for work on precision and distance, while giving you a sense of an opponent
with the arms and legs as obstructions.

Concluding Remarks

When building home training equipment, always think safety first. If theres ever a
question of something working right, stop and fix it. Its your responsibility to keep this
equipment up and working in good condition. Your safety and those around you depend
on it.

With that in mind, be creative and have fun. There are lots of simple, yet effective types of
equipment that can help you to hone your martial arts skills. You are only limited by your
own imagination.

If you come up with other ideas that youd like to share, Id love to hear about them.
