Age is no concern for Shell

THIS summer’s programme of Shell sponsored Age Concern events in Cheshire is
well under way and being enjoyed by all those taking part.
This happy group from Poole Day Centre in Ellesmere Port are pictured before
casting off from Christleton under sunny skies on a canal boat trip to Tattenhall.
Shell joined forces with Age Concern (Cheshire) two years ago to put in place a
programme of bus and boat trips which would encourage older people to leave
home more often and enjoy many of the attractions on offer.

Shell public relations manager Edward Brady, pictured left, said: “It became clear in
recent years that the older people in our society were not benefiting from corporate
sponsorship in the same way as younger people.
“Our local partnership with Age Concern is our way of addressing the issue and,
hopefully, making a difference.”

Inspectors praise school’s progress

STAFF at Little Sutton CE Primary School are delighted after receiving praise from
Ofsted inspectors.
An Ofsted monitoring visit in June 2009 recognised the “good progress” made in
all areas identified since the last inspection.
Children spoke of their enjoyment coming to school and parents were happy with
the progress their children were making and that home /school communication was
seen as a strength.

Skills course for new drivers

A FREE course is on offer for young Ellesmere Port motorists who have passed their
driving test in the last 12 months and want to build on their skills.
The Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership is funding two Pass Plus Xtra training
courses which include a theory session specifically aimed at new drivers.
Arranged by Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Road Safety Unit, the courses will
take place at Ellesmere Port Fire Station on 3rd September at 6pm.
Participants may be entitled to a discount on their car insurance if the course is
completed within 12 months of passing their driving test.
“Unfortunately statistics show that new drivers are likely to have a crash within the
first two years after passing their test more than at any other time” said Cheshire
West and Chester Council Environment Executive Member Neil Ritchie.
Everyone taking part in the course must live in Ellesmere Port, should be aged
between 17 and 25 and places are limited, allocated on a first come, first served
basis.
The courses contain a theory session and on-road training modules covering driving
in towns, in all weathers, at night and driving on rural roads, dual carriageways and
motorways.
To book a place please contact Road Safety Officer Lue Ellis on 01244 973602 or

Sport sparks school interest

ELEVEN young people from Ellesmere Port and Neston who completed a special
sports project aimed at re-igniting their interest in education, have been awarded
certificates at a special presentation.
The annual Sports Project Presentation took place at the Epic Leisure Centre in
acknowledgment of the hard work put in by the 15 and 16 year olds who took part in
the scheme.
Sport is used as a tool and a fresh approach to engage young people who are at risk
of exclusion from mainstream education.
Ten students achieved their 60 hours, Sport and Fitness short course ASDAN
accreditation. They also received their Duke of Edinburgh sectional awards for
Physical and Skill, as well as their emergency first aid certificate.
Dom Ellis, a year eleven student from Cheshire Oaks High School was awarded
his Level One Sports Leaders UK award along with his sectional awards for Duke of
Edinburgh (physical, skill and voluntary). Dom also achieved his V accreditation and
his Emergency First Aid Award.
Participants were referred from Ellesmere Port Specialist School of Performing Arts,
Cheshire Oaks Specialist Sports College, Capenhurst Specialist School and the
Education Support Team. Each one was involved in the planning and the development
of the programme.
Michelle Aspden, the Council’s Youth Sport Development Officer said: “All the young
people, families, agencies and schools should be exceptionally proud of the work
that has taken place over the past academic year. The young people have not only
received qualifications, but also developed their personal and social skills.”

HEALTH AND BEAUTY
with Angela Bartlett

Q. I am very fair skinned and I am going on

holiday to a hot country. I always burn, so
should I have some sunbed sessions before
I go to protect my skin?
A. I would never advocate the use of
sunbeds. A suntan is the skins response
to exposure to harmful radiation in order
to protect itself. In short, a tanned skin is a
damaged skin. If you are very fair skinned
take sensible precautions – apply a very
high factor sunblock at regular intervals, stay
out of the sun during the hottest hours and
wear a hat. If you want to go brown – fake it
with a self-tan product. Either build up the fake
tan gradually with a product applied daily or visit
a professional therapist for fake tan treatment.
Don’t forget that fake tan is purely cosmetic and

AUGUST IN YOUR GARDEN

Gardening by Janet Heath
AUGUST can be a dull month in the garden as the spring and early summer flowering shrubs and
perennials are over and tree foliage can look a bit tired.
With a bit of planning, you can have colour in the garden if you concentrate on flowering
perennials and some shrubs. Flowering shrubs include such favourites as hydrangeas,
Hypericum Hidcote with its shiny buttercup yellow flowers, Lavatera, which flowers for weeks in
shades of white and pink and Buddleia, try the variety Black Knight with its deep purple flowers.
If you go for flowers, there are many perennials that will reliably flower every year especially if
you have a sunny border. Campanula lactiflora is tall with clusters of bell flowers in white or pink.
For something different and if you have slightly damp soil, consider Inula hookeri which will give
you large, yellow delicately fringed daisy flowers about 75cm (30ins) tall in July and August. Pair it
with scarlet or deep pink Dahlias for a bright show of summer colour. Gypsophila or Baby’s Breath
is an old cottage garden favourite with tiny button white flowers on tall stems (75cm (30ins) which
will give you an airy cloud of white.
In the vegetable garden you should keep your, salads, tomatoes, beans and courgettes watered.
If you pick them regularly, they will continue to produce. Beans and peas will tend to stop
producing if pods are allowed to mature. Late salads and radishes can be sown for cropping in
autumn. Try some of the salad leaves for winter such as Land Cress which is similar in flavour to
watercress but easier to grow in fertile soil that does not dry out. Spinach can also be sown for
winter and spring cropping again in rich fertile soil.
August is a good time to clip hedges for the last time in the year. Lavender can also be clipped
back after flowering for bushy growth next year. Remember not to cut back into wood where there
is no green growth, as this will kill the plant.
Lawns may well be looking tired after long dry spells but they will come back again after early
autumn rains. Rather than waste water on the lawn, just accept the situation!

Roads dug up for gas and water repairs

THIS summer United Utilities and National Grid are working in Great Sutton to
modernise the water and gas supply.
Both companies are working separately in the area but will be co-ordinating their
work on Sutton Way to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and road users.
This means that only one trench will need to be dug and one set of road works will be
put in place; so disruption to local traffic is significantly reduced.
United Utilities aree constructing a new 2.2km water pipe from the junction of
Pooltown Road and Sutton Way through to the Water Treatment Works at Sutton
Hall. After running along Sutton Way the route of the water pipe will follow Green
Lane, Glencoe Road, Harewood Avenue and Gerrard Avenue. This work means
that Ellesmere Port will have a more robust water network able to supply high quality
drinking water to the area for years to come. This work will be complete in winter
2009.
National Grid are working in this area to replace 6.4km of old metal gas pipes with
modern plastic ones by February 2010. The gas pipes that are being replaced run
down Pooltown Road, along Sutton Way and then up Chester Road. The old pipes
have served the area well and replacing them will mean a more secure, reliable gas
supply for at least the next 80 years.
As a result, Sutton Way is closed from Pooltown Road to Overpool Road, with a
diversionary route via Pooltown Road, Capenhurst Lane and Overpool Road.
