THERE were a few tears shed when
the historic St Mary’s on the Hill Nursery

But those tears have now turned to
happiness with the nursery moving to
new premises in Handbridge on Old

In January the school relocated from

Ken Jones, headteacher, thanked
everyone for making it a memorable
day. He added: “We will
continue to offer the same high

children from our new site as
we have done for the last 162

The original city centre school

outside school
ANDREW Firman is retiring this summer after 20 years of
leadership at the school.
The school has had an outstanding year gaining a number
of awards including ArtsMark Gold, International School Andrew Firman
Award, Inclusion Quality Mark and Investors in People.
To cap it all the school reached the final shortlist of six last month in the Times Educational
Supplement’s Secondary School of the Year Award.
Reflecting on his time at the school, Mr Firman said: “Being head of a school is the best job
in the world.
“It has been an exciting and rewarding journey including three school inspections each of
which designated the school as ‘good’ despite this becoming harder and harder to achieve as
Ofsted changed the rules each time! I am proud of what we have achieved together: it has
been a real team effort by the teaching and support staff, working with our young people and
with the support of their parents and our governing body.
“The school is in very good shape and I have every confidence in the staff and the school’s
leadership team to take the school on its next journey from good to outstanding – a journey
we have already begun.”
Asked about his future plans, Mr Firman said: “My wife, Gill and I are looking forward to an
extended visit to China in September and have many more trips on the agenda. There’ll
be time for more rowing and hill walking and a little bit of work on the side as a School
Improvement Partner. I am not looking for full time working!
“I shall miss students and colleagues at Queen’s Park, but we’ll still be based in Chester and
I look forward to reading the good news stories about the school into the future.”

Good citizens
ONE challenge for schools is to find ways of teaching
‘citizenship’ and ‘community cohesion’ in a way which
is engaging and meaningful to pupils.
The theme next year at The Catholic High School
will be ‘Who is my neighbour?’ The campaign will be
on three levels – making the community cohesive by
challenging discrimination and bullying, by getting a
better understanding of the UK community and by
global links with other communities.
Part of the campaign will be celebrating new links
with schools in China and Uganda. At Easter Science
teacher Liz Bradley spent two weeks in Uganda
visiting the Bwijanga School.
Then in May head teacher John Murray and Terry
Daltrey, head at St Clare’s travelled to China to set up
links with a primary and a secondary school in Xi’an
in North West China.

WALKING PROBLEMS IN CHILDREN

by Peter Colhoun

FOR those of us aged forty and over,

we can remember the ‘school nurse.’
Many of us were taken into the sports
hall and asked to walk across the
block wood flooring while we were
checked for knock-knees, tiptoe
walking, bow-legs, flatfeet and more!
The ‘school nurse’ walking check-ups
don’t seem to be a feature of modern
schooling, but for those of us who
are parents of young children (myself
included), we have a natural concern
that our children develop properly
on all health fronts - including their
standing, walking and running habits.
So who checks children’s
walking these days?
Many health professionals can offer
advice on how your toddler, infant or
teenager is walking. An appointment with
a Podiatrist can also be invaluable. As
Podiatrists, we have specialised training in assessing the standing, walking and running habits of
people of ALL ages.
How should children walk?
The simple answer is, that this depends on you child’s age. When babies become ‘toddlers’ at
around 12-18months, they should have “fat, flat and floppy feet.”(1)
However, the natural low arch of the foot, the knock-knee stance and tibial torsion should all
improve each year until the early teens, when the normal arch and stance should be observed.
Your Podiatrist can measure your child’s feet and lower limb angles to check that they are within
the indicated range that is appropriate for his/her age.
What biomechanical problems can children have?
Children who are excessively pronating can experience arch or achilles pain, osgood schlatters
(knee) syndrome, and other musculoskeletal issues. Other conditions are unique to growth and
age, eg, tiptoe walking can still present in older toddlers, whilst Sever’s Disease causes heel pain
most commonly in ten year olds. Orthotic insoles can help most problems.
Would you like to have your child assessed?
To book an hour’s biomechanical assessment, please phone Peter directly on 07880 702 475, or
contact the Clinic reception staff on 01244 682 500.
The fee for the hour assessment is £50 and we welcome patients who self-pay and self-refer or
those who come via medical insurance policies. Ask us for details.

AuGuST IN yOuR GARDEN
Gardening by Janet Heath
AUGUST can be a dull month in the garden as the spring and early summer flowering shrubs and
perennials are over and tree foliage can look a bit tired.
With a bit of planning, you can have colour in the garden if you concentrate on flowering
perennials and some shrubs. Flowering shrubs include such favourites as hydrangeas,
Hypericum Hidcote with its shiny buttercup yellow flowers, Lavatera, which flowers for weeks in
shades of white and pink and Buddleia, try the variety Black Knight with its deep purple flowers.
If you go for flowers, there are many perennials that will reliably flower every year especially if
you have a sunny border. Campanula lactiflora is tall with clusters of bell flowers in white or pink.
For something different and if you have slightly damp soil, consider Inula hookeri which will give
you large, yellow delicately fringed daisy flowers about 75cm (30ins) tall in July and August. Pair it
with scarlet or deep pink Dahlias for a bright show of summer colour. Gypsophila or Baby’s Breath
is an old cottage garden favourite with tiny button white flowers on tall stems (75cm (30ins) which
will give you an airy cloud of white.
In the vegetable garden you should keep your, salads, tomatoes, beans and courgettes watered.
If you pick them regularly, they will continue to produce. Beans and peas will tend to stop
producing if pods are allowed to mature. Late salads and radishes can be sown for cropping in
autumn. Try some of the salad leaves for winter such as Land Cress which is similar in flavour to
watercress but easier to grow in fertile soil that does not dry out. Spinach can also be sown for
winter and spring cropping again in rich fertile soil.
August is a good time to clip hedges for the last time in the year. Lavender can also be clipped
back after flowering for bushy growth next year. Remember not to cut back into wood where there
is no green growth, as this will kill the plant.
Lawns may well be looking tired after long dry spells but they will come back again after early
autumn rains. Rather than waste water on the lawn, just accept the situation!
