Benefit Planned
For April Quillen & Children
A wonderful person and mother of four, April Quillen, has been
out of work since August due to the illness of her seven-year-old
daughter, Abigale. Abby had a fever with weakness and severe pain,
and it quickly progressed to a very extreme case of MRSA. She has
endured several surgeries to cure the infection and toxic shock, and
to flush the infection from her bones. Abby was released from Chil-
drens Medical Center September 12. Her mother has remained by
her side the entire time, and has been unable to work.
This family is in dire need. Any donations whether
a product or service to raffle off, to a cash donation of any kind
would be of great help to the Quillens. Monetary donations can be
made at the Wright-Patterson Credit Union in Troy. Also, a bake sale
is being held, and donations of baked goods would be very much
appreciated.
The Quillen Benefit will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, 5 p.m., at the
Mountain Top View, 7578 W. Fenner Rd., Ludlow Falls. There will
be door prizes, food, a raffle, live music, and a bike run (kickstands
up at 1 p.m. for the bike run). Higgins-Madewell will entertain at 7
p.m.
This family is having a very rough time, and needs help with bills
and living expenses. If you can help them in any way, please do.
If you have any questions, you can call Kim Bohse at 937-654-
0547.

Letter to the Editor
My name is Carolyn Smith and I am seeking re-election to the Bradford Exempted Village School Board.
I am married to Bruce Smith and we have lived in this school district 40 years. Our children attended Bradford
schools and excelled, going on to be productive, moral citizens with lovely families and successful careers.
My main priorities are faith, family, and community.
I bring a variety of experience to the Board, including a degree in accounting, and my job also included
customer service. I am a member, deacon, and secretary of Harris Creek Church. When our children were in
school I served as president of the PTO, president and secretary/treasurer of the Athletic Moms Club, and
Band Boosters, and room mother.
I serve as Student Liaison Achievement officer on the Board. It is my pleasure to recognize the accom-
plishments of our students, as I have always felt that Bradford students need more recognition. I retired in
March and began to volunteer in reading for the first grade. This was a wonderful opportunity for me to see
these bright, enthusiastic children. This year I volunteer for third and fifth grade math intervention students.
Our teachers are a wonderful resource and I have personally witnessed their commitment and dedication.
If re-elected, I assure you I will continue to encourage and support the effective and efficient use of your
tax dollars. I will continue to put the welfare and safety of students first. A lot of thought and prayer goes into
every decision I make on the Board, and I have made some tough decisions. Please know I will never make
a decision that I do not believe is for the betterment of our students.
Thank you to the staff and administration of Bradford School for the tireless hours you put in and for your
commitment to the students. I am proud of you and you have my deepest respect.
I ask for your vote on November 5 that I may continue to serve our students and community as a member
of the Bradford School Board.
Respectfully submitted,
Carolyn Smith, Covington

Vectren to Replace Bare Steel, Cast Iron Gas Main & Service Pipelines
To improve system reliability for natural gas to customers, Ritter
Pipeline crews working for Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio (Vectren)
will soon begin replacing gas mains and services in the Village of Cov-
ington. The work is part of the companys pipeline replacement pro-
gram, which is a multi-year program to replace more than 1,700 miles
of bare steel and cast iron pipeline infrastructure throughout its service
territories in Indiana and Ohio. In Covington, approximately 3,300 feet
(0.6 miles) of gas main and 67 service lines will be replaced.
Areas of work in Covington for 2013 include the following:
E. Broadway St. between N. Wall St. and N. Wenrick St.
N. Wenrick St. between E. Broadway St. and E. Walnut St.
N. Ludlow St. between E. Broadway St. and E. Walnut St.
E. Maple St. between N. Ludlow St. to 200 ft. east of N. Wenrick St.
The work will consist of installing a polyethylene (plastic) system
to replace the current bare steel and cast iron gas pipeline system. First,
the gas main will be replaced within the right-of-way, and then the
service lines serving residential and commercial customers will be re-
placed. Upon completion of the project, affected yards, sidewalks, and
streets will be restored.
Prior to service replacement, a Vectren representative will contact
customers to schedule this portion of the work, which will involve a
short service interruption. Additionally, a Vectren representative will
schedule a time to relight any natural gas appliances of impacted cus-
tomers.
To help ensure the safety of construction workers and the traveling
public, motorists should remain alert, reduce their speed, and watch
for stopped traffic while passing through the work zone area.
For more information on the pipeline replacement program, please
go to www.vectren.com/pipelinereplacement.
All work is weather permitting.

ball Tailgate Party. They will be close to the truth as the OSU Alumni
Club of Darke County sponsors its Annual Blood Drive Tailgate Party

tral Avenue.

as door prizes every half hour and donors will be offered a large variety
of goodies, including tasty buckeyes after donating, or attempting to

donations a record.
CBC Darke County Account Representative Dana Puterbaugh
noted that BUCKEYE STRONG T-shirts will be given to donors,
another incentive to donate.

out donor experience by scheduling a time online at www.Donor-

PUBLSHERS OF THE PENNY SAVER, STLLWATER VALLEY ADVERTSER AND COUNTRY LVNG
Will Return Next Week
The latest Milton Memories was held September
10, with the panel made up of area farmers.
Keith Kauffman led the discussion. He farmed for
64 years. He and Lucille were married in 1949 and
moved to the farm where he was born and raised. At
age 80 it was decided it would be his last year of farm-
ing. They had a sale on September 4, 2010, and con-
tinue to live on the family farm.
Preston Mote spoke of his uncle, Wilbur Mote, and
Susan Fox, two people who influenced him to go into
farming. His family kept big gardens and ate what
they grew all year long. In 1955, he bought his first
tractor and his first crop was 10 acres of corn. He mar-
ried Sandy in 1961. He was drafted in 1963 and had
to start over upon his return. He eventually bought
Ross Netzley's fuel company and has turned over
most of the operations to his son Kevin, and Preston
now works on crop fungus research.
Jerry Jackson's family went into the cattle business
in 1957. Soon after, his father died, leaving him, his
two brothers, and their mother to look after 200 head
of feeder cattle and 40 milk cows. In 1959 they won
a prestigious award from DP&L for their method of
operation. He eventually took a job with TWA and
moved to St. Louis. His boys took over the farming
and he spent spring and fall vacations helping to plant
and harvest.
Jan Strawser started farming at age three. Others
would set everything up and he would drive the trac-
tor from the tobacco field to the shed. His family also
had cows, chickens, and sheep, resulting in many be-
fore and after school chores. He and wife Carol live
on what was his grandfather's farm. He spoke of the
time when tobacco was the cash crop; now its corn
and soybeans. He also talked about the steep increase
in the cost of equipment and chemicals for todays
farmers.
Ty Hissong's dad and grandfather farmed and held
jobs in town. Keith Kauffman (Kenny's son) was his
FFA Advisor and helped him achieve an American
Farmer Degree. He began farming in high school
when he bought his own baler. Others on the panel
had a big influence on him. He spoke of his grandfa-
ther starting out with horses, then getting a tractor
with a two-bottom plow and 20 hp.
Joe Jackson is Jerry's son, Kenny Kauffman is Joe's
great uncle, and Joe's son wants to farm. Some of the
changes he has noticed: 34 years ago almost every
country home was a farm now few are; you could
make a living off 80 acres now it takes 1,000 -
2,000; few farmers today have livestock; and you can
no longer get feed in Union Township.
Dean Dohner rode his pony to bring the cows in for
milking at 5 a.m., then went to school. He took Vo-
Ag and rented farmground his senior year. He bought
equipment for $1,450 and paid it off the first year
farming 80 acres. He now owns the family farm and
lives in the house his great-grandfather built in 1845.
He began making maple syrup at age 50. At 80, he is
still farming and making syrup.
Jim Albaugh lives on Albaugh Rd. (10 members of
his family live in three homes on the road). Six gen-
erations have lived in the house his great-grandfather
built in 1880, with bricks made and baked on the
farm. There was a cane mill powered by a steam en-
gine. During the 50's and 60's, when farm income was
down, he worked at NCR and lived in town. Dean
Jackson influenced him to take over the family oper-
ation. The family specializes in purebred hogs, have
taken titles in State Fairs, and now grandsons have
had county champions.
Jerry Long said his family moved to a farm in
Kessler in 1942 when he was four. His dad farmed
and drove a gas truck. In high school he bought a
1935 John Deere tractor for $50 and rented ground no
one else wanted. In the '40s he bought 40 acres,
farmed it, had 12 head of milk cows, and worked at
Aeroproducts in Vandalia.
Many spoke very highly of Milton-Union Vo-Ag
instructor Ray Diley and how he would visit students
family farms and helped out when there was an injury
or sickness. In the spring and fall he taught and helped
with farming. In the winter they had mechanical train-
ing so they could work on their own equipment.
Whenever Ray Diley's name is mentioned its always
with high regard and respect for the positive influence
he had on students.
You can hear many more details by listening to
this session on local Channel 5, by purchasing a soon
to be available DVD, or borrowing one from the Mil-
ton-Union Library. For further information call Barb
at 698-6559 or Susie at 698-6798.
