Background
The town of Bad Salzuen is in the Lippe area of North RhineWestphalia, and is a popular spa town. One of its principal buildings is the Concert Hall, which was opened within the spa grounds in 1963. With a capacity of over 1,200, it is the largest venue in the region and is often used by radio stations to record concerts.

The challenge
In 2005, the entire concert hall area was given protected status as an outstanding example of 1960s spa architecture. However, by any archi tectural standards it failed to comply with many contemporary norms and guidelines, and was in urgent need of renovation, particularly the lighting system. This included 600 matt, 60 watt bulbs no longer permitted on the ceiling and some 1,600 inefcient 25 watt halogen bulbs in decorative light features such as chandelier, suspended lamps and wall lamps.

chandeliers to generate a shimmering, golden effect. Spot LED (10 W) spotlights were used to illuminate a multi-part relief on a foyer wall. Being free of infrared and ultraviolet radiation, their LED light is ideal for showing off works of art. As a result of connecting the DMX control system to the LEDline2 RGB luminaires, particular effects in illuminating the concert hall faade can be achieved. They can be linked to the lighting for the fountains to create an integrated artwork providing a marvellously colourful display set to music. While this is going on, the decorative, external CitySpirit LED lights on the redesigned vestibule can be dimmed. Also part of the decorative outdoor lighting are 60 power-saving DecoScene inlaid ground lights tted with MASTER Colour CDM-TM bulbs (20 W). Of an evening in the vestibule, they bring the very best out of the recently planted, artfully supported trees.

Benets
Updating the lighting has led to a major improvement in energy efency: annual consumption is now over 23,000 kilowatt hours less than before. CO2 emissions alone from the lighting have fallen by around 14 tonnes yearly. When the reduced spending on maintenance and bulb changing is factored in, annual savings are 25,000 euros. Moreover, the lighting system now complies with all modern requirements, while the longer life-span and reduced need for maintenance will have one highly practical benet the amount of time required to replace faulty bulbs in the extremely high concert hall ceiling will be drastically minimised.

The solution
Once the decision makers had been persuaded that a LED-based solution would make good long-term sense, over 2,200 LED lamps in all were installed throughout the hall. The ceiling was tted with MASTER LEDbulb long-life lamps (8 W). Three chandeliers, each previously holding 350 halogen bulbs, were tted with Novallure LED lamps with a light colour of 2700K.
