BIOL 1115; Fall 2013 General Biology 1 for Engineers

Course Summary: This course is designed to provide an introduction to the basics of biological life for those concentrating in the fields of engineering. The topics we will discuss will be highly relevant for future engineers. The foundations you learn this semester will be applicable to such topics as bioremediation, the production of pharmaceuticals, tissue engineering, energy and biofuel production, and genetically modified algae. It is my hope that you apply the concepts you learn in this course to tackle more advanced topics in bio-engineering fields as you continue in your studies here at NU and beyond. Instructor: Dr. Missy McElligott m.mcelligott@neu.edu ! ! ! Office Hours: T/F 10:00-12:00 113 Mugar room 201 Mugar

Text: This course has adopted an electronic textbook, Principles of Biology provided by Nature Education. You will be able to obtain a copy of this book from the bookstore or directly through Nature Education. The course code to find the book on the Nature Education site is17772533 for students in section 1 (morning section) and 17772534 for students in section 2 (afternoon section) . If you are 100% sure you are taking the course, feel free to buy the book. If there is a chance you will drop the course then you may want to hold off as you cannot return this book. The Laboratory requires the Pearson Custom Lab Manual for the Biological Sciences. This lab manual has been custom designed for the BIOL1116 lab section. Laboratory: The lab is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and work as a member of a team. The lab constitutes 25% of your grade and attendance is MANDATORY. You must pass BOTH lab and lecture in order to pass this course. There are NO un-excused absences. For a legal, religious or athletic conflict, you must contact your Teaching Assistant or the Laboratory Supervisor prior to the lab to schedule a make-up. Grading: There are 4 multiple-choice exams throughout the semester. The lowest of your first 3 exam scores will be dropped. The final exam is required and can not be dropped from the exam average. You will also have 8 blackboard quizzes every other week. The quizzes encourage you to study weekly and keep up with your readings. These quizzes account for 15% of your grade. The quiz will open on blackboard on Friday at 3:30 and will close on Tuesday at 8:00 am. You have 15 min to complete each quiz. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped.

Throughout the semester, you will work in a group to present 1 primary research paper to the class on a topic of your choice. Your group participation and overall group score will account for 10% of your final grade. The lab constitutes the remaining 25% of your grade. Exams: 50% Lab: 25% Blackboard Quizzes-7: 15% Paper Presentation: 10% Make-ups: If you have an excused absence for an exam (religious, athletic, legal or documented medical issue), I require 24 hours notice by email. You will be administered an exam at a pre-arranged time no later than four days after the original scheduled day of the exam. Your health and your family obviously take precedent over an exam or class, and last minute problems will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Academic Conduct: Northeastern University has a strict conduct code which can be found at http://www.northeastern.edu/osccr/codeofconduct/index.html. Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Note, that plagiarism is not only taking another persons idea, but also includes providing another student with your own work without permission from your instructor. Any student found cheating in this course will be given an automatic ZERO on the exam or assignment and may be referred to OSCCR. Doing well. Attendance during lectures is not mandatory, but it will help your grade. Be aware that I will lecture on materials outside of the book to try and bring some topics particularly relevant to engineers into the course material. If you do not attend lecture youll miss that. Ask questions during lecture if something is unclear. Email me if something is unclear. Come to my open office hours if something is unclear. Ask your peers or tutor support system if something is unclear (the lab TAs are great resources). I want you to do the best you possibly can, but that requires a significant effort on your part as well. The Biology office also offers free peer-tutoring. I encourage you to sign up for this tutoring service if you feel uncomfortable with the material. I have seen many students revive their biology grades by meeting with a peer tutor.
