Background II
Scientific Wireless and RF background of AWE
Reiner Hoppe developed in his PhD thesis a new ray tracing model, which is the basis of AWEs famous 3D IRT propagation engine. Till today Reiner is working on the deterministic modeling of the mobile radio channel for various applications. Since 1995 Reiner was involved in the development of propagation models and network simulators where he authored and co-authored more than 45 scientific papers (published in different journals and at international conferences). Reiner wrote also a chapter about radio propagation in the Wiley Encyclopedia of Telecommunications. Ren Wahl joined AWE Communications in 2004. His PhD thesis is dedicated to the propagation models for time variant scenarios and to the Dominant Path Model. Ren published many papers on deterministic wave propagation models on various scientific conferences. Before joining AWE Communications, Ren worked in the radio network planning domain of Vodafone in Germany. Today Ren is also responsible for AWEs propagation plugins for 3rd party products (iBwave, Aircom,). Oliver Stbler developed in his PhD thesis new models to predict the channel capacity in MIMO networks. Besides the MIMO technology, Oliver is responsible for the AWEs activities in the area of sensor and MESH networks. Soon after joining AWE Communications, Oliver was responsible for the CAD and data converters. Based on this experience he developed TuMan, AWEs CAD tool for tunnel scenarios. Today he is leading the development activities for the 3D visualization engines of ProMan, WallMan, and ConMan.

Gerd Woelfle has been working on mobile radio channels for wireless communications since 1993. He finished his PhD thesis in 1999 about wave propagation models and radio network planning. Besides his activities for AWE, he was more than 10 years a Lecturer at the University of Stuttgart (Lecture: Mobile Communications). He authored and co-authored more than 70 scientific papers, got several best paper awards at international conferences and holds international patents in USA, Europe, and Japan. Today he is the CTO of AWE Communications and he is responsible for the architecture of the WinProp Software Suite.

The RF and Wireless Experts of AWE Communications their individual know-how & long experience in RF and wireless is the reason for the superior software products.

History
Milestones 2005 - 2010
2005 MASC (Multiple Antenna Scenario Configuration) released. Developed in cooperation with Vodafone. Computation of antenna patterns including the mounting of the antennas increases the accuracy of the predictions. Presentation of WinProp at IIR conferences (In-Building-Solutions (Munich) and Cell Planning Forum (Vienna)). Cooperation contract with CNES (France) is signed. WinProp is extended towards satellite technology (e.g. GPS,). Time-Variant Prediction Mode released. Now moving obstacles, moving Tx and moving Rx are supported to simulate time variant mobile radio channels (incl. Doppler shift). Especially important for the automotive industry for sensor networks and Car2Car communications. ESA-funded project ORTIGIA launched. Together with Eutelsat, DLR, and Fraunhofer the DVB-H standard is extended towards hybrid (satellite and terrestrial) radio networks. MIMOWA project started (funded by EU and Germany) to push the MIMO-technology (with Alcatel-Lucent, Infineon, Telefonica,). AWE contributes the accurate ray-optical propagation models to the simulation of the radio channel. iBwave selects the propagation engine of WinProp to improve their indoor radio network planning tool. In the first year more than 100 licenses of the propagation engine were sold by iBwave to customers all over the world. J-ORTIGIA project (co-funded by ESA) started to evaluate DVB-SH technology with trials in Italy, Spain, and Japan. Within the first 8 months of 2008, the WinProp software suite is sold to customers on all continents. TdF (Tlvision de France) requests the extension of WinProps indoor prediction module to include predictions on arbitrary surfaces (e.g. on the walls) INCA released: Predictions inside buildings based on outdoor predictions or measurements. Two BMBF (German ministry for research) funded projects started: SIMPLON and PLATON. Within SIMPLON a new network planning engine for wireless OFDM networks (e.g. WiMAX and LTE) is developed. PLATON contributes modules for the simulation of sensor and MESH networks to the WinProp suite. iBwave extends the cooperation: AWE contributes now also the network planning module to iBwaves software suite. A new software module for WinProp considers MIMO in the network planning. The first version of the connectivity simulator for MESH and sensor networks is released. Within the FORUM project AWE extends the WinProp suite to model the influence of femto cells in cellular networks. The new network optimizer module is presented for the auto-selection of antenna locations and carriers.
