Exploiting Opportunities
Enabling drivers, operational demand and heightened consumer acceptance is creating a new pervasive marketplace for unattended solutions from petro, parking, mass transit and ticketing to retail, kiosks and vending. Wherever payment acceptance is required quickly, securely and with maximum convenience there is a need for unattended payment devices. However, for self-service equipment providers and integrators to fully exploit these opportunities to the full and meet future demand from government, merchants, hospitality, transit and other commercial organisations, they need payment components that can accommodate diverse applications, markets and environments and which are easy to integrate. They also need to invest in solutions which offer longer life cycles and slower obsolescence and, where required, that can deliver new services, payment types and value added services to the consumer.

A Unique Market with Unique Challenges

Reliability and ease of use are essential for any unattended application. Regardless of how self-service machines are used or the goals for deploying them, if they dont serve customers consistently and conveniently, they wont deliver benets. That means designing solutions that can cope with the extreme, diverse and often remote environments in which they are placed. Unlike attended retail based point of sale systems, unattended machines require a great deal of complex mechanical integration which is highly dependent on the application and location. This can include signage, dispensing, printing, scanning, tethering, vandalproong and weather-proong systems as well as remote power supplies and connection not to mention payment acceptance. This creates many unique challenges for those involved in providing integrated unattended solutions. Some of the primary external factors that impact unattended payment component design include:

Environmental Issues
Often installed in outdoor situations, unattended POS often have to cope with location based hazards such as wind and rain, extreme temperature ranges, direct sunlight, dust and pollution and of course vandalism, misuse and crime. The build criteria for components, therefore, has to be exceptionally robust and rugged enough to withstand repeated and arduous use in the most severe conditions.

Remote Communication
Connecting POS devices is vital in terms of authorising e-payments, enabling EMV and delivering interactive and information based services to the consumer. In the case of kiosks that vend as well as accept payment, communication is also vital to provide stock status and data. Within unattended environments, connectivity can be restricted, particularly in outdoor locations. Modern solutions must be able to provide a exible array of options to ensure that they can be utilised in the broadest of applications. This includes LAN, multiple USBs, MDB, RS232, RS485 and wireless options like PSTN, ISDN and GPRS.

User Interfaces & Multimedia

The way user interfaces are dened within the kiosk and unattended industry is undergoing dramatic revolution. The proliferation of colour displays and touch screens has not only created a new consumer expectation, it has also helped drive the cost of enabling technology down. While, in the past, this type of smart functionality did not constitute a viable commercial investment, todays competitively priced components means it does. This allows the inclusion of multimedia, internet and streamed content into the unattended device.

Alternative Payments & VAS

Most banks and card issuers in Europe are committed to driving mass adoption of contactless technology. Facilitating faster payment channels, contactless offers retailers a nancially viable and attractive alternative to coin transactions within the kiosk and unattended environment. While contactless offers an immediate platform for kiosks, it is the future introduction of Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled mobile phones and the realisation of the mobile wallet that could stimulate major investment in new kiosk platforms. It wont be long before NFC and contactless kiosks are being deployed across Europe encouraging users to use cards, mobiles, key fobs and stickers as a means to pay for kiosk services. NFC is an exciting development for self-service. Not only does it speed up the payments process, it also allows a two-way dialogue with the consumer. It provides a way for loyalty and couponing apps to be carried on the mobile and redeemed at the point of payment. NFC also creates an opportunity to create digital footprints for the consumer allowing them to access added value and highly targeted services at smarter self-service points. NFC when combined with colour displays, touch screens, internet access and multimedia capability represents a seriously intelligent customer touch point. It is not hard to visualise the possibilities loyalty schemes, targeted electronic digital advertising, kiosk instigated mobile marketing and much more.

Form Factors & Constraints

To ensure rapid uptake of new payment types such as contactless and mobile payments, acceptance components must be easy to integrate within existing form factors to keep investment and upgrade costs as low as possible. At the same time, they must be energy efcient and able to work with limited power requirements. Above all they must be easy to use and make the experience as trouble free for the consumer as possible, this includes factoring in items such as anti-glare displays, error free keypads and even video and voice communications.

Security & PCI

Security levels vary widely for existing equipment in the marketplace. Given the extended lifespan of many unattended payment devices, many early generations are still in operation today. The age of the equipment has a direct relationship to its security as many new initiatives may have been introduced since installation. Access to sensitive electronics easier on older models means many do not have tamperresistant encrypting pin pads as a standard offering. The use of non-encrypting keypads with standard mag-stripe card readers is of particular concern as it provides thieves with access to both sensitive card and PIN data with little chance of detection by the cardholder. Some industry insiders estimate the number of these vulnerable dispensers still in operation to be more than half of the current market population. Today, unattended devices must comply with all current security standards. Under this, unattended devices now have to undergo a rigorous testing and approval programme to ensure they comply with industry standards for securing sensitive payment card data during any point in the transaction process.
