MEC 411 COMMON ASSIGNMENT SEPTEMBER 2013 JANUARY 2014 Submission date: 13 December 2013 Theme:

STRUCTURES IN TASIK SHAH ALAM PLAYGROUND

Objectives: 1. To help students relate the fundamental principles learned in class with real life occurrences. (CO1) 2. To train students to do analysis and apply theories to real life problem and situations. (CO2) 3. To develop students teamwork skills. (CO3) Instructions: 1. Students are required to conduct this exercise in groups (maximum is 5 persons). 2. Take several photos of a structure existing at Tasik Shah Alam Playground. Focus only on one structure and photos should be available in different angles and must be clear. 3. Complexity of the structure will be taken into consideration more complex structure will give you higher mark. 4. Observe and study the structure from the perspective of MEC411: Mechanics of Materials course (materials used, external loadings, and design parameters such as the cross section, length, width, and diameter). 5. Construct the proper free body diagram for the chosen structure. 6. Make your own assumptions where necessary and make sure they are justifiable and logical. 7. Determine the support reactions. 8. Determine the internal forces (internal torque, moment, shear and normal forces). 9. Determine the maximum or the critical stress at a significant member (or members) of the structure. 10. Determine the maximum or the critical deformation at a significant member (or members) of the structure. 11. Discuss your results and findings. You may discuss your results by comparing the calculated values with the failure strength of the material used for the structure which can be obtained from the textbook. 12. Write a report of your findings. 13. The report must be at least 5 pages long. The maximum is 10 pages. 14. This assignment will contribute 10% (8%: report and 2%: peer assessment) to the overall course mark.

Report requirements: Your report must contain the following items: 1. Introduction explain briefly on the related theories, principles and formulae. 2. Problem statement/Objectives 3. Methodology, Analysis and Results the main solution including the FBDs, assumptions made, equilibrium equations, shear and moment diagrams, calculation of normal, shear and bending stress, calculation of strain and deformation, deflection equation and other related contents. 4. Discussion and Conclusion 5. References textbook, journals, technical reports

Report Writing Rubric Assessment

Scale Criteria 1 Poor Topic is poorly introduced. Lack of understanding on the related principles and theories of the topic. Objectives are poorly defined. Chosen structure is very simple. Consists of only 1- 2 parts. Assumptions are poorly made and unjustifiable. Photos of structure are unclear. Free body diagrams are poorly translated from the photos of structure. Dimensions and labels are missing. 2 3 Acceptable Topic is fairly introduced. Moderate understanding of on the related principles and theories of the topic. Objectives are fairly defined. Chosen structure is consisted of 3-5 parts. Assumptions are fairly made and justifiable. Photos of structure are clear. Free body diagrams are fairly translated from the photos of structure. May not be fully accurate. Dimensions and labels are adequate. Detailed procedures. Attempted to calculate more than two values. One or two wrong results. 4 5 Excellent Topic is well introduced. Clear explanation of on the related principles and theories of the topic. Objectives are well defined. Chosen structure is complex consisting of more than 5 parts. Assumptions are well made and perfectly justifiable. Photos of structure are clear. Free body diagrams are well translated from the photos of structure. Every detail in the photos is accurately described in the FBDs. Dimensions and labels are complete. Detailed procedures. Attempted to calculate all values (maximum normal, stress, maximum shear stress, deformations, strain, deflection, etc.). Correct results. Discussions are very well made and elaborated. Able to relate and discuss comprehensively the estimated results with the strength properties of the material used in the structure. Topic is well concluded. At least 5 References Correct format Total Factor
