Comparison The first difference in terms of the right to establish cooperation with countries outside the association. If the EU is covered integration, ASEAN is an open integration. In other words, member states have the right to organize trade agreements outside the ASEAN framework without nonnegotiable. The second difference is in terms of decision-making. ASEAN to know the name of consensus that while the EU is not flexible. The EU has a hierarchy of decisionmaking more clearly and effectively. Third, in terms of sovereignty members also differ. ASEAN Treaty of Amity and know a Cooperation (TAC). The basic principle of this treaty is a mutual respect for sovereignty and internal affairs of all States members. Although EU also appreciate the domestic affairs of member states, but only for matters which are not regulated in the EU treaties that have been ratified. This means that for many affairs, sovereignty has been transferred to Brussels, the administrative center of the EU. Foreign trade minister and member states do not have rights such as trade agreements with non-EU countries. This is what is meant by supranational forces that are not owned by ASEAN. The fourth difference is in terms of the integration phase. EU chose a more regular steps in accordance with the phases of the measured and revolutionary while ASEAN take steps that are changeable and not follow the normal phases of integration (ASEAN Way). For example, the EU has surpassed the single market phase where the border (customs) is one, while ASEAN is struggling through a phase in tariff cuts slowly and did not heed the concept of "single market" in a fairly long period of time.

Nevertheless, ASEAN and the EU have a common vision of regional cooperation was that the peace, security and regional economic growth can be achieved.
