There are no set methods for planning a supply chain strategy, but there are three main levels of analysis involved with developing a strategy. Level 1: refine and confirm the business objectives that the supply chain must support. Level 2: Examine existing supply chain processes and asses how they match up to business requirements. Level 3: Add operational details to the basic supply chain design.

IKEA, the worlds largest home furnishings retailer, has a vision of providing well designed, functional home furnishings [at] prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them.

Business must consider the following external and competitive factors: Economic environment. Current regulations in the market. Technological development. Cultural, demographic and infrastructural issues. Competing organizations in the international market.

PEST is a very effective method of reviewing and evaluating the impact of external environments.

EXAMINING SUPPLY CHAIN AND DEVELOP A HIGH LEVEL PLAN OF HOW IT FUNCTIONS THERE ARE 5 SUPPLY CHAIN DESIGN AREAS TO CONSIDER WHEN PREPARING THE HIGH LEVEL PLAN: NETWORK PROCESS INFORMATION SYSTEM ORGANIZATION RISK MANAGEMENT

THE INFORMATION GATHERED IN THESE FIVE LEVELS OF PLANNING SHOULD BE USED TO DEVELOP SUPPLY CHAIN MAPS THAT SHOW THE ALIGNMENT BETWEEN PROCESSES , SUPPLY CHAIN LOCATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS. THESE MAPS TYPICALLY SHOW WHERE INVENTORY IS LOCATED, LEADS TIMES BETWEEN PROCESS ELEMENTS AND SUPPLY CHAIN INFORMATION SYSTEMS

IS THE MOST ADVANCE LEVEL OF PLANNING OPERATIONAL DETAILS SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE BASIC DESIGN. THESE DETAILS SHOULD INCLUDE SPECIFIC BUSINESS PRACTICES AND METRICS SUCH AS LEAD TIMES. USING SCOR, THE CATEGORIES OF SOURCE , MAKE , DELIVER AND RETURN CAN HELP A COMPANY INDENTIFY ALL ESSENTIAL ASPECTS PF THE SUPPLY CHAIN.

What is the availability of suppliers in foreign markets? What is the quality of sourced goods? Can sourcing costs be reduced? What is the availability of raw materials , either locally sourced or imported? How are inventories of raw materials handled? Can inventory mgt. of supplies can be improved?

THE MAKE PHASE OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN INVOLVES ALL THE ACTIVITIES INVOLVED WITH PRODUCTION: Are there any activities which can be performed using external partners? Are performance objectives and processes shared with suppliers? Are lean manufacturing techniques used by all manufactures? Is information about production schedules and inventory levels provided to suppliers so that they can monitor and respond to demand?

The deliver phase of the supply chain starts with the receipt of a customer order and includes all activities involved in completing the order.

Can customers be differentiated so that the most profitable customers obtain a preferential customer service experience? What is required delivery lead time? Are alternate delivery systems in place? How are customers communicated with? Does the supply system use end to end tracking so that the statuses of all orders are visible throughout the delivery process?
