Trunk or treat event Concerns
raised over
length of
school day
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
The length of the school day in
middle school and high school
has been increased for the 2013-14
school year, but students havent
been exactly thrilled about it so
far.
Sagar Desai, the student repre-
sentative for Cherry Hill High
School East on the Board of Edu-
cation, gave feedback from the
student body at last weeks board
meeting that suggested the longer
school day may not be having pos-
itive effects on students.
For this school year, the school
district added 30 minutes to the
school day for students. The start
time for the high schools was
moved up to 7:30 a.m., while the
middle school start time is now 8
a.m. This increased the student
day at both levels to seven hours.
The school day at the elemen-
tary schools was unchanged and
remains at six hours.
Desais big concern was the in-
crease of traffic accidents on
Springdale Road. He stated that
there were no student-related ac-

Police shut down
chop shop
On Monday, Oct. 28, at 11:25
a.m. members of the Camden
County Sheriff's Canine and Pa-
trol Unit were conducting an in-
vestigation at 733 North 25th
Street in Camden for a vehicle
that was stolen out of Cherry Hill
on Oct. 27.
During the course of their in-
vestigation, officers discovered
numerous additional stolen vehi-
cles and stolen vehicle parts. The
officers shut down a fully
operational chop shop where ve-
hicles and parts were being
stored. A Camden resident was
arrested as a result of the investi-
gation.
This investigation yielded a
significant benefit to the county
and the community by shutting
down this stolen property opera-
tion, said Camden County Sher-
iff Charles H. Billingham. This
chop shop targeted vehicle own-
ers throughout South Jersey and
after this arrest will have an im-
pact on the stolen vehicle market.
I want to congratulate my team
on a job well done.
Among the items recovered
was a 2004 Mazda RX 8 that was
stolen from Cherry Hill.
Numerous other vehicle parts
are suspected of being stolen and
are being investigated for further
action. The suspect was charged
with five counts of receiving
stolen property and was lodged in
the Camden County Jail in lieu of
$45,000 bail.

Board, administration
initiated longer school
day earlier in the year
cidents on the road all of last
year. This year, there have already
been three.
The accidents have resulted
in major traffic delays and have
led to many students arriving
late.
This is a very big concern for
both students and teachers, be-
cause everyone is affected, Desai
said.
The effects of the earlier start
time are not just related to traffic.
Desai said that students are hav-
ing trouble focusing early in the
morning. This is not just coming
from students, but also teachers
who are reporting an increase of
students falling asleep or not
showing up to early morning
classes.
Its not an intentional pur-
pose, really, its that they are feel-
ing so tired that they cant bring
themselves to go to class, Desai
said.
The concern by Desai is that
these reports may have negative
effects on the students learning.
The board and administration
initiated the longer school day
earlier in the year during negotia-
tions for the last teachers con-
tract that extended the length of
the teachers day.
The districts public informa-
tion officer, Susan Bastnagel, said
the intention was to allow for
more instructional time for the
students to help improve their
learning, not hamper it.
The additional instructional
time for the students is always a
good thing, Bastnagel said.
In other news:
The Board of Education will
be discussing changes to the open
enrollment policy at Rosa Inter-
national Middle School in the
coming weeks.
Discussion of policy revisions
will be featured at the boards
work session on Nov. 12 and the
action meeting on Nov. 26.
The main changes to the policy
will be requiring a commitment
by students when they apply
to Rosa, the removal of the
word lottery from the policy
and the elimination of the wait-
ing list.
Rosa is open to all fifth graders
in the school district. Students
who do not attend Rosa are as-
signed to Beck or Carusi
middle schools based on where
they live.
The Board of Education hon-
ored a number of staff members
who had served in the school dis-
trict for anywhere from 25 to 45
years.
Superintendent Maureen
Reusche stated that these staff
members had 626 years of service
among them and had showcased
their dedication to the district
over their many years.
They serve as models, not
only for the children in our
schools, but models for the teach-
ers who come into our system
each year, Resuche said.

Township seeks redevelopment of property
O
ne year ago at this time, com-
munities throughout New Jer-
sey were in utter amazement
of the damage that Hurricane Sandy
had done. Those of us who were lucky
enough to avoid direct damage from
the superstorm watched the videos
of the flooding in horror.
Hurricane Sandy destroyed peoples
homes, businesses and livelihoods. It
devastated our vacation spots, our es-
capes and our states largest tourist
destinations. It changed the way we
think about storm preparation, and
the likelihood that we can be heavily
impacted by what was before now
thought to be only a southern prob-
lem.
Over the months that followed the
storm, New Jersey rallied together
and fought to recover. The state put to-
gether messages saying we are
stronger than the storm. Volunteers
from all over showed up to help with
cleanup at Shore towns.
Slowly but surely, the federal gov-
ernment made grants available to help
us recover. Insurance companies often
made the process long, arduous and at
times unfulfilling.
One year later, we are still recover-
ing. Homes are still left unrepaired,
businesses have closed their doors for
good, and lives have been changed for-
ever.
But we move on. We keep on truck-
ing, as they say.
The phrase is played out at this
point, but it really is true that we are
stronger than the storm. Sandy cant
beat us.
The storm did remind us of how im-
portant it is to support our local com-
munities. We rushed to the Shore this
summer to vacation, and hopefully,
well continue to do so next year.
Local support isnt just seasonal,
though. In a few short weeks, youll
begin to see campaigns that will urge
you to spend local this holiday shop-
ping season, and its something that
you should definitely do.
Its a practice you can perform all
year round by shopping, eating and
buying locally. We all benefit from the
support.

Cherry Hill Township is looking to
make improvements to a property owned
by Victory Refrigeration on Woodcrest
Road.
The townships planning board voted on
Oct. 21 to recommend that Township Coun-
cil designate the property as an area in
need of redevelopment, according to crite-
ria set forth by the state.
The resolution is expected to be on the
agenda for a future Council meeting.
The planning board conducted this vote
after Robert Melvin of GroupMelvinDe-
sign made a presentation.
Our redevelopment planner basically
had to prove that it does meet the criteria,
said Bridget Palmer, the director of com-
munications for Cherry Hill Township.
Melvins investigation revealed that the
property met two of the eight criteria for
redevelopment. One was that the property
was obsolete; the other is that it is under-
utilized. Only one of the eight criteria list-
ed by the state needs to be met to declare a
property in need of redevelopment.
The Victory Refrigeration property in-
cludes an outdated manufacturing plant
that the township stated is not utilized fre-
quently anymore.
Following a public hearing on the mat-
ter, the criteria were all that the planning
board needed to push the study to Council.
The possible redevelopment of Victory
Refrigeration is not something new. The
idea of redeveloping the property started
in June, when Council passed a resolution
that asked the planning board to perform a
preliminary investigation into the proper-
ty.
This was the site that was on our radar
for a while, Palmer said.
Since then, the township has had a bit of
an image as far as what it wants the prop-
erty to turn into. Subaru of America has
mentioned to the township that it was look-
ing for a new headquarter and the Victory

The Camden
County Free-
holder Board and
the Camden
County Animal
Shelter want to
share the joy of
pet ownership
with our veter-
ans. To do that,
weve created a
new program,
Pets4Vets, that provides shel-
ter animals to veterans at no
fee.
We view this program as a
small thank you to our veter-
ans who have selflessly served
our country. It provides our
men and women in uniform
with companions that will
supply unconditional love to
the most valued members of
our society.
The program is open to all
active military, reservists as
well as veterans. Camden
County residents meeting the
criteria of the program will
have their adoption fees
waived. The animal shelter
will need valid military iden-
tification to waive the adop-
tion fee. If you are a veteran
and do not have an identifica-
tion, you can secure your ID at
the Camden County Clerks Of-
fice in Camden or at the
County Store in the Voorhees
Town Center.
Camden County loves pets,
especially cats and dogs. Ac-
cording to the last census, 70
percent of Camden County
households include one of our
furry friends. Now you can
adopt a pet of your own, and
can do it at no charge.
By providing this program,
we hope to en-
courage mem-
bers of the
military and vet-
erans to adopt
pets currently in
our shelter, giv-
ing them loving
new homes. This
initiative is part
of a wider pro-
gram of benefits
and services tailored to veter-
ans, including special Job
Fairs and Benefits roundtables.
In addition to this new
Pets4Vets adoption program,
the Freeholder Board is work-
ing hard to make life better for
all animals in Camden
County. In August, we an-
nounced plans for a $3.5 mil-
lion investment over the next
two years to improve the lives
of shelter animals and to in-
crease adoptions. This years
budget includes $2 million for
the renovation and expansion
of the animal shelter. That
project is already underway.
And, an additional $1.5 million
is projected for next years
budget for the construction of
a new adoption center expected
to open by the end of 2014.
The Camden County Animal
Shelter is located at 125
County House Road in Black-
wood. Please visit the shelter
if you are considering adopt-
ing a dog or cat for your family.

Fundraiser raised record $600,000
The President and CEO of The
Cooper Foundation of Cooper
University Health System Susan
Bass Levin recently announced
that the fourth annual Pink Roses
Teal Magnolias Brunch raised a
record $600,000 for breast and gy-
necologic cancer research and
clinical programs at MD Ander-
son Cancer Center at Cooper.
Levin also announced that
since the first brunch in 2010,
fundraising for Pink Roses Teal
Magnolias has topped a total of
$1.5 million.
More than 800 women and a
few good men attended this
years brunch honoring MD An-
derson Cancer Center at Cooper
Director Generosa Grana. The
event was held at The Crowne
Plaza in Cherry Hill.
Support for Pink Roses Teal
Magnolias helps women conquer
cancer, said Levin, an ovarian
cancer survivor. With the open-
ing of the new MD Anderson Can-
cer Center at Cooper and the lead-
ership and vision of Dr. Generosa
Grana, patients from throughout
the region have access to world-
renowned cancer care right here
in South Jersey.
Grana received the Pink and
Teal Hero Award for her outstand-
ing contributions to cancer care
and for advancing research that
improves treatment and will one
day lead to a cure.
I am honored to receive the
Pink and Teal Hero Award, but
my patients are the real heroines.
Every day they teach me about
strength, perseverance and what
truly matters in life. Grana said.
I am forever grateful to The
Cooper Foundation and its sup-
porters who are enabling us to do
our best work researching new
cancer treatments and providing
high quality care for all of our pa-
tients.
Grana's clinical and research
endeavors at Cooper have focused
on breast cancer, cancer genetics
and community outreach inter-
ventions aimed at underserved
populations, and she continues to
be active in each of these areas.
She has been active in clinical tri-
als for breast cancer as well as in
research focusing on the study of
the hereditary aspects of breast,
ovary and colorectal cancer.
Grana has received numerous
awards for her work and has been
recognized as a Top Doctor by
several regional publications.
In addition to the Pink and Teal
Hero Award presentation, the
Pink Roses Teal Magnolias
Brunch featured personal stories
from cancer survivors and includ-
ed a Survivors Parade to recog-
nize all cancer survivors in atten-
dance. Guests also participated in
a health fair, silent auction and
raffle. The brunch was co-chaired
by Donna Forman of Cherry Hill;
Janet Knowles of Moorestown,
Sandy Levenson of Cherry Hill,
Mary Ann Todd of Marlton and
Sandee Vogelson of Cherry Hill.
They are all cancer survivors.

Property ideal because
of location to PATCO,
I-295 and Turnpike
Refrigeration property has been
brought up in discussion.
The property is ideal for many
companies because of its close
proximity to the PATCO High-
Speed Line as well as I-295 and the
New Jersey Turnpike.
Regardless of whether Subaru
or other companies choose to
eventually move there, Palmer
said the township is looking to
transform the area into a modern
office space for various compa-
nies.
Regardless of whether Sub-
aru wants their headquarters
there, we want it to be a first-class
corporate campus, Palmer said.
Something we really dont have
is a marquee corporate center.
The use of the property will ul-
timately be determined by the re-
development plan, which is a few
steps away from happening.
If Council passes a resolution
that declares the Victory Refriger-
ation property an area in need of
redevelopment, the project will go
back to the planning board.
The planning board will then
write a redevelopment plan that
will more specifically designate
what the property will be used for.

Drapes, wood blinds, sheers
or verticals......... It a dilemma
that makes for many calls for
HELP! Have no fear. I have got
a handful of great alterna-
tives to work with any design
style.
The first thing to consider
is the level of privacy and
light needed for the space.
This certainly will not limit
your product selection, it's
more that the architecture
could limit some choices but
not in all cases. If we are
planning a front living room
window that gets extreme sun
at some portion of the day
then you need a dual purpose
treatment. Look at Hunter
Douglas Silhouette sheer
shades. They are one of those
products that lets you have
your cake and eat it TOO.
They can be open and light fil-
tering then when needed
close them or tilt them to de-
flect the harsh sun rays.
There are many interesting
textures within the collection
from linen texture weaves to a
refined sateen cloth and col-
ors galore.
When we think about bed
or bath windows the need
change a bit. It's generally not
a space you sit during the day
so it could be light filtering
but definite need for full pri-
vacy. This can be achieved by
the product just mentioned or
may I suggest a layered plan.
That could be a fabric roman
shade finished with station-
ary panels to complete warm
yet functional window treat-
ment. For a bit of the old fash-
ioned approach but twisted
up a bit I like to layer a tra-
versing liner panel under a
sheer panel for optional light
control .This is a soft window
treatment yet can still have
an updated detail like a euro
pleat verses a traditional
pinch pleat heading.
One of up and coming
trends for window fashion in-
cluded fabric roman shades.
The Design Studio Collection
by Hunter Douglas features
cotton , silks and blended fab-
rics to compliment any decor
(even your mothers) and as
far as light and privacy op-
tions that's not limited either.
They are usually on the top of
my list for a space that cannot
be cluttered with too much
fabric yet a need for a soft
window treatment.
We have a full display of
these and other products at
the studio on Third St . Call to
set an appointment to see
them and have an interactive
computer presentation of
your windows showing vari-
ous options. It's truly amazing
and makes the visual concept
so easy !

Jeff Stewart is a regular guy
from Cherry Hill. Hes a dad, a
former youth baseball coach, and
a hard worker. He also loves ten-
nis and with his team, spent a re-
cent weekend competing for a
USTA League National Champi-
onship in Indian Wells, Califor-
nia. The Cherry Hill team, cap-
tained by Stewart, lost to a team
from Dallas, Texas, 3-2 in the
championship match. Earlier in
the day, the Cherry Hill team de-
feated a team from Folsom, Cali-
fornia, 4-1, in the semifinals.
They advanced this far by win-
ning their round-robin flight con-
tested Friday and Saturday.
Along with Stewart, the team
features Seramil Acierto,
Domenic Christopher, Luis Pas-
toriza, Dennis Leggoe (co-cap-
tain), Michael Sarubbi, John
Oeser, Petr Matejka, and Jim
Mogan and plays at the Cherry
Hill Health & Racquet Club. Each
day, Stewart submitted a blog post
to Middle States, recapping his
teams experience. His posts can
be found on
www.mstennisblog.com.
The top four teams in order of
finish are: Texas Section, Middle
States Section, Southern Section
and Northern California Section.
Established in 1980, USTA
League has grown from 13,000
participants in a few parts of the
country in its first year, to more
than 820,000 players across the na-
tion today, making it the worlds
largest recreational tennis
league.
USTA League was established
to provide adult recreational ten-
nis players throughout the coun-
try with the opportunity to com-
pete against players of similar
ability levels. Players participate
on teams in a league format,
which is administered by the
USTA through its 17 Sections.
The league groups players by
using six National Tennis Rating
Program levels, ranging from 2.5
to 5.0. USTA League is open to
any USTA member 18 years of
age or older.
