PRODUCT SAFETY NOTICE

Many electrical and mechanical parts in television receivers have special safety related characteristics. These characteristics are often not evident from visual inspection nor can the protection afforded by them necessarily be obtained by
using replacement components rated for higher voltage, wattage, etc.
Replacement parts which have special safety characteristics are identified in this service manual.
The replacement for any safety part should be identical in value and characteristics.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
NOTICE:

WARNING:
1.

2.

3.
4.

5.
6.

Observe all cautions and safety related notes located inside the receiver cabinet and on the
receiver chassis.

Operation of this receiver outside the cabinet or with the cover removed presents a shock hazard
from the receiver's power supplies. Work on the receiver should not be attempted by anyone who is
not thoroughly familiar with the precautions necessary when working on high voltage equipment.
Do not install, remove or handle the LCD panel in any manner unless shatterproof goggles are
worn. People not so equipped should be kept away while the panel is being handled. Keep
the panel away from the body while handling.
When service is required, observe the original lead dress. Where a short-circuit has occurred, replace
those components that indicate evidence of overheating.
If the LCD Panel is damaged, crystaline liquid may leak from the LCD panel and broken glass may be
scattered. The crystaline liquid is toxic. Avoid contact with your skin, eyes, or mouth.
DO NOT touch the broken glass or crystaline liquid with bare hands, as cuts, poisoning, and/or skin irriation may occur. DO NOT let glass fragments or crystaline liquid get into your eyes or mouth. Should either
contact your eyes or mouth, rinse the contacted area thouroughly with water and consult your doctor.
The fluorescent tubes in the panel contain mercury that is toxic and if broken should not be touched.
DO NOT dispose of the TV with general household waste. Follow local laws and regulations for legal and
safe disposal of the TV. For disposal or recycling information, contact local authorities or the Electronic
Industries Alliance at www.eiae.org.

Leakage current check
Before returning the receiver to the customer, leakage current should be measured using following methods.

1. Cold Check
With the alternating current (AC) plug removed from the AC source, place a jumper across the two AC plug prongs.
Connect one lead of an ohm meter to the AC plug and touch the other lead to each exposed metal part (i.e. antennas, handle bracket, metal cabinet, screw heads, metal overlay, control shafts, etc.), particularly any exposed metal
part that has a return path to the chassis. The resistance of the exposed metal parts having a return path to the
chassis should be a minimum of 1Meg Ohm. Any resistance below this value indicates an abnormal condition
and requires corrective action.

2. Hot Check ...Use the circuit shown below to perform the hot check test.
1. Keep switch S1 open and connect the receiver to the measuring circuit. Immediately after
connection, and with the switching devices of the receiver in their operating positions, measure
the leakage current for both positions of switch S2.
2. Close switch S1, energizing the receiver. Immediately after closing switch S1, and with the
switching devices of the receiver in their operating positions, measure the leakage current for both
positions of switch S2. Repeat the current measurements of items 1 and 2 after the receiver has
reached thermal stabilization. The leakage current must not exceed 0.5 milliampere (mA).

SERVICE TIP:
Many customer generated symptoms, intermittent symptoms or no symptom found can be resolved by system
reset or initialization. Before visiting the customers home ask the customer 1st to try the System Reset button
on the control panel and if this does not resolve the issue, then they can use the front panel initialization by
pressing the FORMAT and INPUT buttons simultaneously. Other items that can be reset or initialized are
detailed in the guide below. Use it to avoid making unnecessary calls that may not be covered under warranty.

LED Diagnostics Error Code Check

Note: The TV must be in Shut Down and not manually switched Off, to perform the Error Code Operational Check. When the TV is switched Off, the code automatically resets to 12 No Error.
Press the front panel INPUT and MENU buttons at the same time, and hold for 5 seconds to
activate the Error Code Operational Check. The POWER LED will then flash denoting a two digit Code.
Note: The front panel buttons must be used, NOT those on the Remote Control.

The number of flashes indicates the value of the MSD (tens digit) of the Error Code.
The flashing then pauses for approximately 1/2 second.
The LED then flashes indicating the value of the LSD (ones digit) of the Error Code.
Example: If the Error Code is 32, the LED will flash three times, pause, and then flash two times.

The Error Code is repeated a total of 5 times.

Cable providers send QAM64 and/or QAM256 through the

coax cable to the TVs tuner. Once converted to IF it is demodulated
to an MPEG transport stream (TS). If a card is present in the
PCMCIA slot the TS will be passed to the card and returned back to
IC8506 and then finally sent to the Xilleon processor. If there is no
card present in the card slot and the tuner is tuned to a QAM channel
the TS will pass directly from the POD interface IC directly to the
Xilleon for processing.

card will only unscramble the TS if it receives the proper
authorizations to do so. Those authorizations are received
via Out-of-Band data (OOB). The OOB contains information
about authorizations, channel maps and more.

When the TV is powered off it begins a process

called harvesting. There are 2 types of harvesting; one
of which is TVGuide harvesting. During this harvesting
process the TV scans through every channel and searches
for TVGOS data. This data is located in the VBI (Vertical
Blanking Interval). The TVGOS data will be located
somewhere between line 10 and line 25 of the VBI (except
line 21).
The data is provided by Gemstar and is inserted
into the VBI by the broadcaster onto a host channel. A
host channel can be any analog channel agreed upon by
Gemstar and the broadcaster. The data packets are
transmitted several times per day for several hours (This
will vary based on location). The TV must be in the OFF
state for the full duration of the transmission to receive the
data packets in their entirety.
(Example of VBI period - Pin 43 of IC2K01)

When the harvesting begins the TV-Micro

enables the output from pin 43 of the Video Switch (see
figure1). The SUB-Y output of the video switch (IC2K01)
is tapped off and sent to a sync separator where H and V
sync are isolated and sent to the PIC Micro. The sync
signals are used for timing of the control signals sent to
IC7R04. This IC directs charge to a hold capacitor which
establishes the slicing threshold for the comparator based
on the level of the incoming SUB-Y signal. Pin 2 of the PIC
Micro provides a hold function to stabilize the H-Sync
during the vertical blank time. The SUB-Y signal is sent to
IC7R02 where the slicing is preformed. The output of
IC7R02 is serial data and is sent to Pin 1 of PIC Micro (See
figure2). This data is assembled by the PIC Micro and is
then transfered by serial communication lines to the DM
PWB via the TS connector and then to the Xilleon
microprocessor.

Pb Solder

Using Lead Free Solder

The above symbol indicates Lead (Pb) Free solder was

used during the construction of PWBs. Only Lead Free
solder should be used when servicing these PWBs.
Solder must be compatible with that used by the manufacturer. Leaded solder can not be used on PWBs manufactured with Pb-free solder. The Mitsubishi standard for
service requires the use of Tin-Silver-Copper (Sn-96.5,
Ag-3.0, Cu-0.5). It can be obtained through the Parts
Department.
Order part number: PB FREE SOLDER
Lead Free solder has a higher melting point, and does
not wet as well as leaded solder. This means it does
not adhere as readily to the solder iron tip, and the surface to be soldered. To counteract this, the flux used is
more corrosive.

solder connection may take longer.

Poor wet-ability can cause solder balls.
Higher temperatures can cause flux spattering.
Soldering iron tip life is shortened.
Dull finish solder joints (not shiny) can appear to be
a cold solder joint.

In general a tip temperature of 700 F will usually provide good

results.

Displays used to indicate Pb-free

PCBs will be marked, indicating the level of Pb-free construction. Table 1 defines the levels by phase and shows the different symbols that will be displayed on the PCB. Additionally, a
PCB constructed using Pb-free solder may be simply marked
LFS.
When possible, the indication will be placed close to the part
number that is screened onto the PCB (not the part label).
Figure 1 is an example of a PCB showing the display and its
location.

The following cautions must be taken when using Pb

Free solder.
Higher temperatures can cause the PWB to
warp, detaching surface mount components.
