ABSTRACT

Annabelle C. Autentico and Elmer E. Sabino Jr., Bachelor of Secondary


Education in Chemistry, College of Education, MSU–Iligan Institute of
Technology, Iligan City, March 2009. “Comparative Study on the Effectiveness
of Using “Do-It-Yourself Instrument” and PowerPoint Presentation in
Teaching Selected Topics in Chemistry”. Thesis Adviser: Prof. Esmar N.
Sedurifa.

This study aims to compare the performance level of the respondents

exposed to “Do-It-Yourself” instrument and PowerPoint presentation in teaching

selected topics in Chemistry.

It is a quasi-experimental method research. The data were treated using

percentage, mean, and Mann-Whitney U test to come up with the answer to the

problem raised by the study.

The results of the study show that in the pretest, most of the respondents

exposed to PowerPoint presentation performed fairly but in the posttest more

than half of the respondents had satisfactory performance. On the other hand,

majority of the respondents exposed to “Do-It-Yourself” instrument performed

fairly in the pretest but had excellent performance in the posttest. Thus, these

show that there is relatively a great difference between the scores of the

respondents in the pretest and the posttest.

It is therefore recommended that “Do-It-Yourself” instrument approach

should be used in the classroom for it enhances the performance of the students

better than through a lecture.
